It was supposed to be like one of those normal days when you stay at the district and you are preoccupied with paperwork. Of course, for Jay Halstead it was never a normal day. He would always find himself into trouble even at times no one could ever imagine. Like that one time that he decided to help Casey and Severide with a construction and ended up at Med with ten stiches and a huge gash on his head. It was exactly like one of those days although he had no clue of it.
The alarm of his phone alerted him that it was time for work. 7 am in the morning, the time he would usually get up, take a shower, eat something like a French toast or cereal and descend the stairs all the way to the parking lot.
"Shit." Jay exclaimed as he reached his car realizing he left his phone upstairs. Going back to the building he crashed with an unknown person, a man around 30s who wore black clothes and carried a rucksack on his shoulders. "Excuse me." He whispered without receiving no answer from the mysterious guy. Staring at him for a while, he decided to let it slide and walked to his apartment as quickly as he could so he wouldn't be late, when a scream was echoed from the lower floor. "What the…" Acting quickly, he marched back to the stairs slowly, trying to find the source of the terrified voices he could hear, in order to help whoever was in danger. The man he faced earlier was standing outside of an apartment his gun raised, threatening to kill a woman and her baby. Jay didn't remember having any problematic neighbors…
"Give me Sarah or I am gonna kill you both." The man's tone scared every other person in the complex keeping them inside their houses. "I swear; I am going to…" Before he finished his phrase someone knocked him on the ground creating a hand to hand combat. The other man was stronger, however he had the advantage of still holding his gun so he raised in the air, shooting one time before hurting the man above him on the head leaving unconscious on the floor. "Crap." He mumbled to himself when he noticed the Chicago PD badge hanging on his belt and ran away leaving the woman and baby with the sleeping detective.
Jay wasn't sure what hit him but he knew he had a terrible headache considering that he couldn't open his eyes from the pain.
"Jay?" A familiar voice called his name.
"Jay, can you hear me?" Another familiar voice.
"Halstead, wake up." This seemed like a command but that voice had an anxious complexion in it.
He finally managed to open his eyes staring at the four people standing above him. Hailey, Voight, Brett and Foster. Trying to sit up, he was pulled back down on something hard and realized he was on a board. "What happened?" He asked in a hoarse voice bringing his hands on his head, moaning.
"You'll spend a good time at Med, that's what happened." Hailey mocked as soon as she realized her partner was going to be fine.
He groaned causing everyone to laugh. "I don't need medical attention, I am fine."
"Yeah we can see that cowboy." Foster said picking up the board with the help of Adam and Kevin while Sylvie held the Saline that was connected to Jay's IV line.
The ambulance ride was more boring than interesting for the young man, as he was alone –he didn't let anyone join him- with Emily checking his vitals every now and then and treating his head wound. By the time they arrived at Med, the stretcher he was on was rushed into the emergency department. The worried looks of his brother and the staff made him feel a little guilty for putting in trouble so many others apart from himself.
"Will, I am okay." He spoke before even his brother inserting the room. "I just tried to stop a criminal…"
"Good job detective, however you still need to get checked out." Marcel spoke while checking his lungs and then abdomen for any signs of fracture before moving to his forehead. "Alright, I need CT, MRI, X-ray, CBC, PT..." and so many other test that Jay couldn't figure out their use.
Hours later, the young man found himself lying on a hospital bed with a gauze stuck on his head, connected to a heart monitor and more IV lines with his partner by his side. To his eyes, the scenery looked exactly the same. Same room as the last time, same cables, only the cannula wasn't there. Even the clothes on Hailey's body were the same. Only this time he was pissed. Pissed at his brother for insisting an admission to the hospital, to his Sergeant for ordering uniforms at the door, to his partner for staying with him almost all day. Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, he thought about how he almost died the last time he was brought at Med, how they wouldn't let him return to full duty for at least a month, how Hailey almost admitted her feelings about him. Slashing his eyelids open he saw Will standing on the bedside not her. The former was not wearing his scrubs instead he was dressed up in jeans and a white t-shirt. "What are you doing here? Where is Hailey?"
"We get it, you like her more than me." He joked continuing. "Voight called her, the guy who hurt you, was appeared again in your complex."
"Did they get him?"
"No… He left, fortunately before anyone else got hurt."
Jay lowered his head.
"Look man, I know you don't want to be here especially after the Angela incident but I had no choice. I am not taking the risk of you passing out anywhere out of here. You took a pretty good blow out there."
"It's okay, I just… I thought that this would be a normal day."
"Expect the unexpected." Will laughed.
"Sooo… you're staying?"
"Ah, no. I have a date with the hottest woman in Chicago."
"Fine. Leave your little brother alone in an unknown hospital, your brother who hates hospitals."
"I can stay if you want. I could cancel it." He said pulling his phone out of his pocket.
"Gooo… Have a drink for me."
Fortunately, his little hospital nightmare lasted only three days. He was back at work in no time with Voight keeping an eye on him in case something happened. At first, he felt pressured cause he had to stay on desk duty for some days but by the time he was back on action, he felt refreshed.
"Beers on Molly's tonight?" Ruzek asked as he inserted the bullpen walking towards his office.
"I don't know, I got to ask my babysitter." Jay replied looking at his computer screen.
"Babysitter?" Adam raised an eyebrow.
"Will. Ever since the shooting he won't let me go anywhere without knowing. Let alone after the attack."
"Oh man… That's terrible…" Ruzek told him in a sympathetic tone. "Well, good luck convincing your mom."
Jay rolled his eyes and continued working on his computer. That day had nothing special like the previous one. No big case, no bad guys, just two or three small robberies.
"Halstead, my office." Voight announced as he passed by him towards his office.
He was taken aback by the sudden call of his boss so he decided to follow him. He settled himself on the couch waiting for Hank to start the conversation first. When the older man only stared at him, he spoke. "Is there anything I can do for you, Sarge?"
"You tell me."
"What?"
"Where were you last night?"
Moving his finger up and down on his cheek, he thought for a moment before replying. "Home with Will."
A picture of him talking to a man on Belmont Avenue was appeared in front on Voight's hands. The older man seems angry. "Isn't that you?"
"You're stalking me now?" Jay yelled jumping from the sofa grabbing the photo, inspecting every single details of it.
"James Mack. Also known as the man who attacked you. It seems like you're talking with him."
No answer. Nothing.
"We are looking for this guy for two weeks now and you're covering him up? He tried to kill you."
"I am not covering up for anyone." He screamed at the top of his lungs attempting to stand up for himself.
"You do realize that this is a crime, right." Voight stood up leaning on his office to face the younger detective.
"What are you gonna do? Arrest me?" He mocked.
"You are suspended till further notice."
The last phrase left Jay stranded. His mouth dropped to his feet. He tried to talk but no words could come out.
"Give me your badge and gun."
"For your information, there's more to the story." He threw his badge and gun on the desk and moved out of the office and building in no time.
Only he knew the pain he was currently feeling. No one else could understand. Sitting down on the pavement in the parking lot of 21st and burying his head in his hands, thinking, didn't help him relax. Trudy made an attempt to talk to him, to reason with him but she was denied as everyone else who did the same for the past hour. Jay thought that he had had enough of this place so he decided to go somewhere else, somewhere he knew he was loved. Chicago Med. Every single doctor loved to hang out with him, some nurses too, many of them had a crush on the young detective.
"Jay, hi. What are you doing here?" His brother asked as soon as he saw him passing by the front doors of the ER. "Are you okay?"
He sighed. "No, not really."
Instantly the older Halstead changed into his doctor mode, scanning him for any type of abnormalities.
"Voight suspended me."
"WHAT? Why?"
"It's all a misunderstanding, I don't want to talk about it. I just… I had nowhere else to go, can I stay here till we go home?"
"Of course, you wait for me in the breakroom."
"Thanks man." He smiled weakly, punching his brother's shoulder lightly before he moved to the couch of the breakroom where he sat for a few hours. He was upset with the whole issue, however there was no way to explain to Voight the real reason he never told him about his attacker. When he couldn't hold back his tears, he laid down on the couch crying like a young baby before falling asleep.
A loud crash brought him back in his senses, making him opening his eyes wondering where it was coming from. Getting up from the soft sofa uncovering the blanket which was thrown on him by Will and not considering that he wasn't a detective anymore –his instincts had already kicked in-, he marched outside where he was met with a barrel of a gun pointing at him. "Whoa, take it easy." He said raising his hands up in the air.
"They killed my wife and son."
He felt confused. Sure, it was not the first time something like that had happened at Med but why would the man had the gun on him? He figured it out pretty quickly when he took a peak at his surroundings seeing every single doctor and nurse of the Emergency Department kneeled in front of the walls with their hands on their heads.
"I am sure there is an explanation for that. They are doctors, they don't kill anyone on purpose."
"He said she was gonna be okay. Both of them were supposed to be okay." The man yelled with tears in his eyes showing Will. "He is the only responsible for their death and he's gonna pay."
"No one has to pay."
"Yes, they have. They said that my wife would be alright upstairs… They didn't even let me say goodbye to her. That red haired doctor destroyed her life." The gun was pointed at Will at the moment who seemed to have regretted sending the woman into labor before he realized she was bleeding internally. But that was a mistake. It could have happened to anyone. "Now he's gonna pay for what he did." Ready to take a shot the man walked all the way to the young doctor.
"Stop." Jay said. "He wasn't the one who killed your wife, I did it." He announced receiving a death glare from his brother. "I was the doctor who performed surgery on her."
The criminal didn't even bother to verify the news he just heard before turning back to him, pulling the trigger, sending a bullet to his shoulder.
"JAY." Will's screams were echoed all over the hospital as he watched his brother falling on the floor half unconscious, gasping for air. He wanted to make a run for him, however he was scared that the man would shoot someone else.
The latter stepped above the injured detective laughing. "This bullet is for my wife… And this is for my son." Another sound was heard, one of those that torn Will's heart apart.
The red haired doctor made an attempt to approach brother, however he was pushed away when the man's knee landed on his forehead causing him to fall backwards close to Natalie. The last thing he heard before losing unconsciousness was his name being called on the background.
Will woke up to the sound of mumbling. Opening his eyes, the first thing he faced was a white ceiling, a familiar one, Med's squared ceiling. He realized he was laid on the bed and sat up violently as all the previous moments suddenly attacked his brain but he immediately was pushed down by someone. Dr. Marcel.
"Take it easy, buddy." The doctor exclaimed.
"Jay… Where is Jay?"
A sad expression appeared on his face which terrified Will.
"Is he dead?"
Sighing Crockett spoke. "No… Well, I don't know… After he hit you on the head, he kidnapped him. No one knows where Jay is at the moment."
I am back with a new story! Well, I wrote that one two months ago but I never got to post it until now! I hope you like it! 3
