(A/N: We have arrived, readers. The final chapter of this story. It has been great writing Iduna's story. I have received positive reviews for this story and I just wanted to say thank you. It meant a lot to me. This final chapter will focus on Iduna experiencing motherhood with her two daughters, Elsa and Anna before her tragic fate in the Black Sea.)
Chapter Twelve: Mother of Memory
Iduna smiled with indescribable joy as she held Anna for the first time. Gerda, one of the servants aided her through her pregnancies, opened the door to let King Agnarr and their first-born Elsa in. Iduna named Elsa after Diantha's daughter who passed away years ago. Their newborn, she and Agnarr agreed to name her after the council member, which brought the famously strict council woman to tears.
Elsa poked her head up past the edge of the bed, trying to see Anna, making Iduna smile. Agnarr chuckled as he picked up Elsa and sat next to Iduna.
Iduna positioned closer so Elsa could see the baby, "This is your little sister, Elsa. Her name is Anna."
Elsa's three-year-old face lit up as baby Anna laughed and reached out to her. "Hi, Anna."
Iduna and Agnarr melted inside when Elsa playfully wiggled her finger in Anna's face and Anna's little hand grabbed it and laughed as small snowflakes fell around her.
Iduna and Agnarr had their hands full as the girls grew close. Chasing them all over the castle in order to put them to bed. Iduna couldn't be upset as she listened to her daughters' excited laughter as they ran away from her and Agnarr. She laughed, but she could tell Agnarr's patience was wearing thin.
She quickly gave them a peck on the cheek to get his attention. "Wait here to cut them off, I'll bring them to you."
Agnarr smiled and understood, hiding behind a knight statue.
Iduna continued chasing the two as they continued running. They screamed happily as Iduna playfully made monster noises as she chased them, causing them to turn into the hallway she wanted them to.
Instantly, Agnarr jumped out and grabbed Elsa while she caught Iduna.
"Got you," Agnarr chucked. "Time for you two to go to bed."
Heavy is the head that wears the crown. After putting them to bed, Iduna walked with Agnarr to their room. It was a busy day, especially for Agnarr. Iduna could see stress was taking its toll on him. Not just stress of being king, but stress of being a father of two wild girls. Agnarr tried to hold himself high as a king, thinking that would speak volumes to his rebellious child, yet they didn't see him as a king but as their father.
Iduna entered the chambers after Agnarr and watched with concern as Agnarr sat on the edge of their bed and sighed tiredly. He leaned forward, resting his tired face in his hands. A deep exhale escaped his mouth. "I don't know if I can do it anymore, Iduna."
Iduna felt alarmed before kneeling in front of him and taking his hands. "Talk to me."
A moment of hesitation passed before he answered, "Being both a king and a father. How do you do it, Iduna? How do you rule this Kingdom as queen and raise our daughters and still-"
Iduna could feel his stress as she continued to listen.
"I don't want to be a good king; I want to be a great king. I don't want to be king if I have to sacrifice my daughters. They are my world. You…are my world," he said genuinely, looking into her eyes. "Please, tell me, Iduna. I'm falling apart. I can't keep it together."
Iduna smiled, her eyes starting to tear up. She stroked her face as she answered, "When I was preparing to become Queen…to become your wife, two of the most important people in my life told me words I'll never forget. I'm going to tell them to you, but I want you to receive them as though they were coming from me as your wife. Okay?"
Agnarr gave her his full attention.
"You are one of the most loving, drastic, formal, smart and optimistic people I have ever met. Yet shortly after Elsa was born, you changed and stopped being you. You felt like you had to be someone else in order to lead this kingdom and our family. Don't lose what makes you…you. Arendelle and our daughters don't need a king and father they fear. Just be you, the man I fell in love with. You're not a failure. You're only a failure if you give up. I won't let you give up on this Kingdom and our family."
Agnarr began backing away to the foot of their bed as Iduna began crawling towards him. When he ran out of space, Iduna smiled and sat on his lap, cupping his face with her hands.
"Iduna, not now-"
Iduna quickly covered his mouth with her hand and whispered closely to his face with a seductive and alluring voice. "Don't speak. Don't think. Empty your mind. All the worry…fear…doubt. Let it go, Agnarr. Breathe. Just breath. For now, focus on yourself…your desires. Tell me, Your Majesty…what do you want right now?"
Their lips met softly, then gradually they became more passionate and aggressive. She began to unbutton his shirt but Agnarr spoke up, "What I really want…right now?"
"Yes. Tell me, Your Majesty," Iduna smiled, getting close again.
"Is sleep. I'm tired," he said with a straight face.
Iduna rolled her eyes with a s mile before hitting him with a pillow and trying to smother him with the pillow.
"Iduna!" Agnarr exclaimed before grabbing another pillow and got into a pillow fight with his wife.
Agnarr's mood greatly improved due to her interventions. He led the kingdom and the family with a firm, yet fair hand. Iduna tempered Agnarr's stress and anger, keeping him grounded in love and kindness.
They headed to the girls' bedroom to put them to bed. Agnarr called, "Anna! Elsa!"
"Bedtime soon," Iduna called through their closed door.
They heard Anna speaking loudly and entered to investigate.
"Oh, no! The prince is trapped too!" Anna's voice yelled as Agnarr entered ahead of Iduna. "Who cares about danger when there's love?" Iduna silently laughed to herself listening to Anna.
"Ew, Anna! Blegh! Kissing won't save the forest!" Elsa said next to Anna while Anna banged two snow figures together and making kissing noises.
Agnarr picked up a small lantern and walked to the other side of them with a smile as they both watched their girls continue, oblivious they were there. Elsa continued, "The lost fairies cry out! What sound does a giraffe make?"
Anna shrugged.
"Never mind. They wake the Fairy Queen who breaks the spell and saves EVERYONE!" Elsa finished cheerfully, throwing her hands in the air.
"And they all get married," Anna added, holding all the figures in her arms, making Elsa laugh.
"What are you playing?" Agnarr asked, interested.
"Enchanted Forest," Anna immediately replied before she and Elsa were about to play more.
Iduna came to the table behind them, carrying a book, listening as Agnarr continued, "Hmm. That's like no enchanted forest I've ever seen."
Elsa's head shot up excitedly, "You've seen an enchanted forest?!"
Then Anna's head next to her, "Wait, what?"
Agnarr, standing by their bed turned as he answered, "I have. Once."
Anna stood firmly and scolded her father, "And you never told us this before?!" Iduna couldn't help but smile as she watched this.
"Well, I could tell you now if you, uh-" Agnarr replied softly, but the girls excitedly ran and climbed into Elsa's bed.
"Okay," Elsa said eagerly.
Anna rolled into Elsa, accidently hugging her while begging impatiently, "Tell us. Tell us now."
Iduna followed them and looked over at Agnarr, putting the book down, "Are you sure about this?"
"It's time they know," Agnarr replied before sitting down on the bed in front of them. He nudged Anna who was whispering something in Elsa's ear. "If they can settle and listen."
Anna quickly took a deep breathe, afraid their father wouldn't tell them the story. Elsa did the same, making Agnarr chuckle.
As Agnarr told the story, memories of that day flashed in Iduna's mind. She would never forget. Before she knew it, Agnarr was finished and blew out the candle.
"Whoa, Papa! That was epic! Whoever saved you…I love them," Anna said falling into Iduna's lap. Iduna and Agnarr laughed watching their adorable little girl.
Iduna covered Anna with her scarf playfully, making her giggle.
Elsa seemed more scared than Anna and asked Agnarr, "What happened to the spirits? What's in the forest now?"
"I don't know. The Mist still stands," Agnarr answered truthfully. "No one can get in and no one since has come out."
Iduna rubbed Elsa's back to comfort her, and jumped slightly, afraid Agnarr was going to say too much. She knew her daughters. It wasn't time to know the whole truth. "So, we're safe."
"Yes," Agnarr agreed, getting closer to Elsa, "but the forest could wake again and we must be prepared for whatever danger it may bring."
Elsa nodded.
It was time to end the story so Iduna intervened, "And on that note…how about we say good night to your father?"
"ARGH!" Anna groaned loudly. "But I have so many questions!"
"Save them for another night, Anna," Agnarr replied, already heading for the door.
Iduna heard Anna mutter something to Elsa and stayed behind to finish putting them to bed.
"Why did the Northuldra attack us anyway?! Who attacks people who gives them gifts?!"
As Iduna sat on the edge of the bed, Elsa asked, "Do you think the forest will wake again?"
Iduna looked to the left and thought out loud, "Only Ahtohallan knows."
"Octo-who what?" Anna asked innocently
Iduna looked back at her daughters and paused for a sec to recall the lullaby her mother would sing to her when she was their age. "When I was little, my mother would sing a song about a special river called…Ahtohallan, that was said to hold all the answers about the past…about what we're a part of."
Elsa looked fascinated by her words, while Anna looked dumbstruck. Anna whispered, "Whoa!"
As Anna's little head fell on her sister's shoulder, Elsa asked with innocent and eager smile, "Will you sing it for us? Please?"
Iduna smiled motherly at her daughters. Although she was weary of sharing the whole truth, being able to share parts of her past with her beautiful daughters helped her feel connected with her mother even more. "Okay. Cuddle close. Scooch in," she instructed softly. Anna giggled as she laid against her and Elsa cuddled close.
Iduna began singing, stroking Elsa's hair and Anna gently ran her finger across her hand, "Where the northwind meets the sea."
"There's a river, full of memory," she continued to sing, gently touching Anna's nose. As she continued, she gently ran her pinky down Anna's nose, "Sleep my darling, safe and sound."
"For in this river, all is found," Iduna turned her gaze to look into Elsa's eyes. Suddenly, she heard Anna snoring already by her side. Oh, Anna. What am I going to do with you?
Iduna picked up her sweet ginger sweet and carried her to her bed across the room, keeping the song going, "In her waters, deep and true, lie the answers and a path for you." Her eyes turning to Elsa.
Her older daughter smiled happily as she lifted her up off the bed and held her close, "Dive down deep into her sound, but not to far or you'll be drowned." Iduna warmed up even more, touching her daughter's forehead with her own. Elsa's small hand gently touched her face.
Iduna stood up, adjusting how she was holding Elsa and gazed out the window onto the winter scenery, "Yes, she will sing to those who hear and in her song all magic flows, but can you brave what you most fear? Can you face what the river knows?"
Iduna headed back for Elsa's bed, "Where the northwind meets the sea, there's a mother full of memory. Come my darling homeward bound. When all is lost, then all is found." As she reached the end of the lullaby, she gently placed Elsa into her bed and tucked her in with her blanket.
As Iduna headed for the door, Elsa asked curiously, "Where is Ahtohallan?"
Iduna turned to answer, but she didn't know how to answer, "I'm not sure anyone knows."
Elsa, still smiling, yawned before muttering tiredly before going to sleep, "Maybe someone should find it."
Iduna's smile slowly faded and her face became more serious with thought. Yes…someone should.
Iduna exited into the dark hall, seeing Agnarr was waiting for her with a smile. "What?"
"You always had the voice of an angel," Agnarr replied, pulling her close affectionately before they headed for the Royal Suite. "I never heard that song before. A river, you say?"
"It's just a legend. I don't think it's a real, just something for parents to tell their children before putting them to bed," Iduna replied, but couldn't shake the possibility of it being real. "But what if it's real?"
Agnarr turned his head towards her, "Go on."
"Ahtohallan is said to have all the answers about our past and about what we are a part of. What if it had answers about Elsa and her powers?" Iduna shared, slowly getting excited.
"Hmm. That would help us understand her better," Agnarr agreed before they entered their room.
"I don't think I can sleep tonight," Iduna confessed, too excited about getting answers about Elsa.
"Really?" Agnarr asked, turning towards her and pulling her close, "I believe I can help with that."
Iduna's face turned red, recognizing his passionate stare. She smiled, rolling her eyes and playfully pushed his face away, causing him to chuckle.
Iduna sat on the foot of their bed, still thinking about Elsa. "I need to visit Sorenson again. He may have an idea of where to find Ahtohallan."
Agnarr sat down next to her and agreed, "Sorenson has studied legends more than anyone in the kingdom. If anyone knew, it would be him."
Iduna started to get excited, but Agnarr intervened, "But we should get some sleep. You and I will personally visit with Sorenson tomorrow to get answers."
Iduna smiled and their lips were about to meet before they heard Elsa's cry, "Mama! Papa!"
They ran to their room, but it was empty and they rushed downstairs and noticed the door to the banquet hall looked frozen. Agnarr banged against the door with his body as hard as he could and finally got it open.
Iduna's heart stopped when she saw ice everywhere and Elsa cradling Anna's body. She gasped in horror.
"Elsa, what have you done? This is getting out of hand!" Agnarr said as they rushed to them.
"It was an accident. I'm sorry, Anna," Elsa replied fearfully.
Iduna quickly picked up Anna, "She's ice cold!"
"I know where we have to go," Agnarr immediately replied. Agnarr immediately looked for a book to get a map and they were on two horses riding down a path that Iduna didn't recognize. Agnarr carried Elsa on one horse while she held Anna's unconscious body on the other.
When they came to the same clearing they visited before, Iduna instantly recognized it. The Valley of the Living Rock?
Agnarr quickly walked into the clearing before Iduna could say anything. "Please! Help! It's my daughter!" Agnarr pleaded.
Agnarr pulled his family close protectively as all the round boulders rolled towards them and stood up, revealing trolls to their surprise.
"It's the king!" one troll exclaimed and several other whispered with questions. The crowd parted ways as another rolled to them revealing an older troll.
Agnarr talked with the troll. Iduna, so consumed by fear for Anna, she only managed to hear parts of the conversation. The older troll was able to save Anna, but at the cost of her memories. The days that followed were filled with fear and worry. Elsa isolated herself to her room, refusing to go anywhere near Anna after what she did. The gates were closed and the palace staff was reduced.
Iduna got her cloak to leave for Sorenson immediately. "No, I need you to stay here…for Anna and Elsa," she replied softly, holding Agnarr's face in her hands. "I promise I'll find answers. We will find Ahtohallan…for Elsa."
Agnarr nodded with understanding.
Iduna searched everything at Sorenson had concerning magic. When he prodded her over her obsession, she was firm that her reason was her own. She had to keep Elsa's secret. For the next few years, she visited Sorenson, continuing her research. Suddenly she came upon an old map that was ancient Northuldrian. She froze. I…I found it! A map to Ahtohallan!
She met with Agnarr in the secret room with her journal on Elsa and her power opened in front of them. She showed the map to Agnarr and his face turned white. "We found it?"
"We found it!" Iduna exclaimed with excitement and joyful tears. "It's in the Dark Sea."
"I'll inform the Council we're taking a two-week voyage in the Southern Sea to avoid questions," Agnarr said firmly, "We're going to find Ahtohallan…together."
"Okay," she gently squeezed his hand.
Prior to them leaving, Agnarr made preparations. Kai would act in his place and start preparing Elsa for the throne while they were away. He had their personal ship prepared with a limited crew and supplies to last a two-week voyage. Iduna felt her heart being torn in half, seeing Anna and Elsa separated, she went to the docks to be alone. She stared out into the waters to find relief.
Agnarr arrived and looked into her face with gentle concern. Iduna shared her thoughts, "Darling, I've been thinking. It might be time to tell Anna about Elsa. I can't bear keeping her shut out anymore. She's maturing now. She can be responsible."
Agnarr replied, holding her hands, "It's not Anna I'm worried about. What if we let them get close again and the feelings are too much for Elsa? Joy brings out her power as strongly as Fear."
Iduna pulled away slightly, turning to the castle, still holding Agnarr's hand. "But if anyone can find a way to help her, it's Anna."
Agnarr smiled, "You may be right about that. There's not much that girl can't do."
Iduna smiled, "Her love could hold up the world."
"Lucky for the world," Agnarr smiled, pulling Iduna back into his arms. "Okay. We'll tell her when we return."
The two embraced, feeling a strong sense of relief. At last…our family will be back together again, Iduna thought with joy. They said their goodbyes to their daughters before heading out to the Dark Sea. The only others who knew the truth about where they were headed were the crew who swore their loyalty to the King and Queen, and vowed to remain by their side. A raven landed on the ship, seizing her attention. It filled her with fear because according to the Northuldra, a raven was a bad omen that meant death. She swallowed her fears and focused on what they set out to do.
After one week at sea, a raging storm cam upon them. Iduna hid the map in the waterproof compartment below deck. Agnarr rushed to her as the waves began to overtake their ship.
"Ahtohallan has to be the source of her magic!"
"We keep going…for Elsa." Agnarr agreed, holding Iduna close.
"The waves are too high!"
"Iduna!" Agnarr yelled as the lower deck was compromised and they were engulfed by the raging waters.
"Elsa!" Iduna yelled fearfully.
Agnarr pulled Iduna, swimming to the surface as quickly as he could.
They gasped and coughed as they exploded from the surface. Agnarr pulled her close and laid her on top of a large enough fragment of the ship. Above them rose the biggest wave ever. He closed his eyes and embraced Iduna as the wave crashed down on them.
Iduna and Agnarr woke in a dark void. "Where are we?" Iduna asked.
"I don't know," Agnarr said, just as confused as she was. "Iduna? I don't think we made it."
Iduna noticed he felt cold and so did she. Suddenly a whisper spoke to her and she was guided to a snowflake shaped glowing symbol on the floor. As they stood on it, events were revealed to them. Elsa becoming Queen. Her secret being revealed frightening the kingdom. Anna with a man confronting Elsa. Another man attempting to kill Elsa. Anna freeing into a statue.
Iduna looked away in tears and sobbed into Agnarr's chest.
"Iduna, look!" Agnarr whispered.
Anna was unfrozen. Elsa lifts the cursed winter from Arendelle. Elsa and Anna embracing one another. Iduna gasped with happiness and joyful tears came to her eyes. She turned to see Agnarr slowly fading away. She tried to grab him, but her hands went through him. "Agnarr!"
Agnarr smiled as tears came from his eyes. "A voice has spoken to me. My part is over, Iduna. You'll have to do this next part without me. Take care of our girls…okay?"
Iduna crumbled to the floor and wept bitterly. Her first love…was gone. She touched the symbol on the floor again and a voice whispered to her, When the time is right, bring the Fifth Spirit home.
(A/N: Dang! Another longer chapter than intended. Sorry! I wanted to include the opening scenes from the movies since they were important to the story. The ending where Iduna becomes one with Ahtohallan is just my interpretation of the Show Yourself scene from Frozen 2. As for Iduna's confession of her past…I noticed strong hints during Agnarr's scene with his daughters that Iduna had not yet told Agnarr yet. Chronologically, we get the Frozen 2 opening, Iduna confesses the truth, then we get the Frozen 1 opening scene. It all transpired on the same night. Thank you all for your support as I wrote this for you. It fills me with joy that you enjoyed it. I greatly enjoyed writing the story of Iduna and Agnarr for you. I'm not sure what I'm going to do next. I was thinking about doing a story for Agnarr since I regrettably didn't include his perspective in this. Whether or not I write it, I'll leave that to you to decide. Please leave a review and let me know what you liked most about the story.)
