It had been around a week. Everything was alright like what his colleagues had said. At first, it was a little bit awkward. But slowly, he enjoyed it. His days in Japan was wonderful, although sometimes, he should deal with unexpected things. All in all, compared to the hostile environment of Hellsalem's Lot, this Land of Rising Sun offered him much freedom. Even his rights as a non-human species were protected. He was so grateful that Libra offered him this odd job in the first place.

'Ah... Mr. Klaus, Mr. Steven, Mrs. KK... I don't know how should I thank you. Although this mission seems crazy, but I am so happy with this one. And Ms. Smith, I am so glad that you accepted me as a member of MON…'

As he mused about that while typing some paperwork on his desktop PC, some girls – if they could be called so – were complaining and wailing about their problems.

"Zed-kun... I need your help over here! The printer's ink is spewing out." A female ogre with single horn called as she banged her hand onto the poor printer.

"Oi, old fishman! Why my PC doesn't want to boot up!?" A female zombie yelled as she slammed her fingers on the keyboard.

"O'Brien-san... I-I bring some new reports from Smith-san." A cyclops girl walked wobbly towards his desk as she brought a stack of papers.

'Oh, well... This day seems hectic. But I really love my job!'

"Alright everyone. Let me finish one more paragraph." Zed O'Brien replied as he typed vigorously.

A WEEK BEFORE THE TRANSFER…

It was a 'normal' day in Hellsalem's Lot. People, both humans and beyonders dwelled this place which was previously known as New York City, USA. The term 'normal' for this area was quite different than what outside people knew. Explosions, traffic accidents, robberies, murders, and all sorts of deadly shenanigans were a common sight in this area. Despite those life-threatening condition, the people seemed to enjoy their daily life.

Among the crowd in that misty afternoon, three persons were walking joyfully after their lunch break. The first was a tanned-skinned man with white hair in white jacket and white pants, Zapp Renfro. The second was a teenage in long sleeved shirt and jeans who always closed his eyes, Leonardo Watch. On his shoulder, there was his partner, a tiny white ape named Sonic. The last was a hetero-morph between man and fish with blue skin, wearing a muscle-shirt and baggy cargo pants, Zed O'Brien.

The three were heading back to the place where they worked, the Libra HQ. They entered the hidden entrance towards the secret elevator and arrived at the main assembly point where they usually gathered with all the Libra members. There, they saw a very suspicious-looking woman was chatting amicably with their boss, Klaus von Reinherz. The three took a glance at each other upon seeing the mysterious long-haired lady in suit.

"Hey Leo, do you know her?" asked Zapp.

"No." The boy replied as he shook his head. "Mister Klaus' old friend maybe?"

"Hmm… A Japanese?" Zed muttered as he tapped his chin.

A short-haired woman suddenly gave an uppercut to Zapp's chin, making him flying towards the decoration plant at the corner of the room. The woman was Chain Sumeragi, a Libra member who always brought pain for Zapp. As Zapp wiggled out from his unpleasant landing place with bleeding nose, Leonardo could only cringe like usual while Zed gave an uninterested look. The ruckus garnered the attention from Klaus and the lady.

"Oh, hey everyone! Come here! I want you to meet an old friend of mine." Klause raised his hand as he smiled.

Leonardo, Zed and Chain came to the sofa to see the lady as Zapp was still fidgeting near the pot. When they came, the lady smiled at them.

"Hello, I'm Mister Klaus' colleague. My name's Smith." The lady stood and bowed.

"Hi, I'm Chain Sumeragi. Nice to meet you." Chain said as she waved her hand while smiling.

"Leonardo Watch. A pleasure to meet you, Miss Smith." The boy also smiled.

"Zed O'Brien. Nice to meet you." Zed bowed politely.

Smith squinted her eyes while looking at the hetero-morph intensely. Zed was indeed like what Klaus had said. She cupped her chin while assessing Zed's features.

"Mister Klaus," called Smith as she turned her head. "So, he's the guy you talk about?"

"Yes. Zed is our member who will match the requirements." Klaus nodded.

"Eh?" Zed squinted his eyes in confusion while Chain and Leonardo took a glance at each other.

Zapp suddenly leaped up towards Smith. "Whoah… Pretty girl! Would you like to go out with – BBLAARGH…!"

A high kick from Chain made its way to his stomach. Her heel knocked the white-haired guy out cold. Smith could only grimace in response.

"Uhm… mmm, Well… Actually, O'Brien-san… I mean, Mister O'Brien… I come here personally to ask for help." Smith stated her purpose as she regained her composure.

Before Smith could explain further, the elevator door opened. A man in businessman suit and a woman with eye-patch came out. The woman squealed when she saw Smith.

"AAWWW… Smith-chan…" The woman ran and bear-hugged Smith.

"Mmpph, Muissh KheKhe…" Smith uttered between her breath. "Icsh bween a wloong ttime…"

"Hey, Smith. It's been a while, huh?" The man greeted the long-haired lady. "How are you?"

"BWAHHH… Oh, Mister Alan Starphase. How are you?" Smith waved her hand.

"Okay. Since Steven and KK are here, would you like explain once again, Smith?" Klaus asked as he took a booklet in front of him. "And everyone, especially you, Zed… This is very important."

"Very, well." Smith nodded in agreement as she started her explanation.

"So, this MON is a kind of security council for enforcing law for non-human species or liminals, right?" Zed put a questioning look as the others were nodding.

"In some sense, yes," replied Smith as she grinned.

Zed was deep in thought. It was a very hard decision. He was enjoying his days in Libra as her member, but the organization also endorsed him to take the offer. And an acquaintance of Klaus and Steven must be trustworthy person. It made him sure that Smith was not a scammer. But to leave the place where he found joys was something really hard.

"So, what do you think, Mister O'Brien?" inquired Smith.

Klaus who saw Zed's worried face smiled. "Zed, I know you really like Libra. And we really love your hard work, just like we really like you. But if there is a better offer, why don't you take it?"

"Yeah, we don't hate you." Steven chimed in. "We push you to join Smith, merely because you can get better place than here."

'Better place than here? Better than Libra?' Zed thought as he closed his eyes.

"This chance never comes twice. Think about it, Zed." KK suggested as she was still warping her arm around Smith. "Besides experience and wealth, who knows, you'll get nice things. Like spouse, maybe."

'Experience, money… Woman?' Zed pondered even more about those things.

Experience? People who ever worked in more than one company would surely gain more experience than those who only worked in one company. That's a common thing. But to work in a different place and feel different circumstances must be fun.

Money? Smith told that MON would pay him 1,500 dollars per hour. This job must be very lucrative. The amount of the sum nearly made him drooled. Not to mention that there would be some bonuses if he worked harder or made achievements. There was no way a half-unemployment like him would refuse such job.

Woman? This thing seemed far-fetched for a hetero-morph like him. But when Smith described about liminal, his mind wondered about some mythological creatures he found in Iliad and Odyssey. Who knows there would be a mermaid he could take as a wife. 'Oh man… This damn thoughts make me blush!'

"Zed, If I were you, I'll run for it." Chain deadpanned.

The hereto-morph was still thinking. Perhaps he should ask the boy who sat beside him.

"What do you think, Leo?" asked Zed.

"Hmm… Same as everyone I guess. It's up to you. But If I see a golden chance, I will take it." Leo replied as he smiled his usual assuring smile.

Zed's face gave a hint that he was still not sure. Klaus in response thought about how he should convince this member who always be too serious.

"Zed. This is a mission from Libra. Bring peace and order on the Land of The Rising Sun!" Klaus rose from his sitting place and grabbed Zed's shoulders. "Only you who can do that!"

Zed widened his eyes when the word of Libra's chief hit him. The rather poetic command kindled his sense of justice in his heart. To bring peace and order among the liminals. As a species who could be categorized as liminal, it must be an honor for him to take this mission.

"Very well. I accept." Zed said with finality in his tone as the other members clapped theirs hands out of joy.

48 HOURS LATER…

After crossing Pacific and dealing with some headache-inducing procedures around the airport which fortunately, Smith had authority to pass them, Zed had found himself in the city where MON HQ was located. The city looked pretty normal until he saw the creatures described by Smith.

Along the way to the HQ, he saw liminals were everywhere. Policewomen with bunny or cat ears, nurse mermaids, centaurs, harpies, real werewolf, and even succubus who took morning stroll was a common sight in that city. That scenery reminded him to Hellsalem's Lot, but he dismissed such thought since this city lacked the uniqueness of the former New York. This city was too peaceful. As the car he was in came closer to its destination, he hoped that he could find nice colleagues.

The moment he arrived at the HQ, he saw four individuals had stood in front of it. They seemed to be waiting for Smith's homecoming. When he focused his vision, he was shocked to see that they were more bizarre than he saw on the road. He thought that Smith's subordinates were cat and bunny girls like what he saw earlier or something more human in feature. Seeing such reality, his heart sank like a broken ship going into the depth of the ocean.

Zed eyed the four in disbelieve as he came out from the car. The first was a blonde uni-horned ogre lady who stood at around 2.3 meters. The second was a red-haired female zombie with stitches and hetero-chromatic eyes. The third was a petite cyclops girl with bowl cut. The three of them donned in formal attire. And the last one was… a dark-skinned fairy with white hair? And, didn't wear any cloth?

'To force human civilization to these creatures and employ them, this MON must be crazier than Libra!' Zed mused as his mouth was agape. 'I've a bad feeling about this mission. But… I cannot turn back. I should steel myself, no matter what happen.'

"Welcome back, Smith-san," said the ogre lady as she smiled.

"Yo, boss!" The zombie waved her hand as she grinned. "Did you enjoy your short trip? Oh, wait... WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU BRINGING!?"

"Eek… Who are you!?" The cyclops was scared and hid behind the zombie when she saw Zed.

"Eh…? Are you a new member?" The fairy asked nonchalantly.

"Oh… Hey, everyone! I come back with a new member." Smith walked beside Zed towards the girls. "Zed, these are my subordinates."

"H-hello everyone. N-nice t-to meet you." The hetero-morph stuttered as nervousness overcame him. "I-I'm Zed O'Brien."

'Nice… I never think that I will work with an ogre, a zombie, a mini-cyclops and… uh… a girl… Hope that I won't go insane…" Zed mused as the girls came toward him.

Author's Note

Kekkai Sensen X Monster Musume… Well yeah. Enjoy. XD
And why it must be Zed?
Because I think he can be categorized as liminal.

Hope you like it… ;-)
