It's a thing. A thing in progress. Respect the thing. Or don't respect the thing?
As a general disclaimer: I do not own Doctor Who
[Prologue]
I would have loved to say my life ended in a valiant manner; some way in which it'd make my face appear on the Newspapers the following morning so everyone too could read of my heroic demise and mourn the loss of another upstanding member of society. Sadly the thing that snuffed me out was the leukemia I had been fighting (and losing against) my entire, boring existence. It wasn't particularly surprising.
Dying, that is.
What came after? Well…
Welcome, Player.
Honestly, I'm still not sure what to think of it. Internally monologuing has done absolutely nothing to vanquish the words that welcomed me into… the Void? Yeah, probably. Because if this is Heaven or Hell, I am absolutely leaving an awful review. Who the heck decided the afterlife needed to be a blank expanse? It is unnerving. And blinding. Actually, why is it so fucking blinding? Something should be done abou-
I shall dim the lights for you, Player.
"... thanks?" I squeak out and glance wildly around as the white becomes a more bearable grey that still contrasted nicely against the mysterious (possibly sentient) text. My eyes slowly shut as I inhaled deeply. I could handle this. I've already accepted my untimely passing, so what were a few floating words in the grand scheme of existential crises? I was almost certain this was just another one of many to come. "Can you possibly explain what is going on?" I asked politely once I had gathered my thoughts into a semblance of order. No reason to lose my manners now. That would be unseemly.
You have been automatically shuffled into the AUG Department upon your death. I am in charge of your reincarnation process and have been assigned to manually assist your soul into being reborn under the presets of a newly developed system known as LAL.
As informative and straight to the point it tried to be, it took a total of 42 minutes of staring blankly ahead for me to wrap my head around reincarnation and the way the entities of the nether-realm went about it. Why departments? What were all the departments and their subsequent jobs? For what purposed was it set up? How did it come into existence? What defined existence when one no longer breathed air through their lungs or had blood pumping through their hearts? Was I being used as a test dummy for this new system? What was it called again? LAL? Was I going to have a choice in the matter? Did… I actually care if I did or not? It's hard to say. I just felt numb.
System Initialization at 15%, Shall I continue explaining?
So… I did not have a choice in this. Good to know. "Please," I hummed dryly. "Continue."
Thank you, Player. To reiterate, LAL is a newly developed system of the AUGD and not without possible bugs. Therefore, Players like you will be invaluable to perfecting it in the future. I must please ask you not to die too quickly as the more data I can collect, the better. System Initialization at 35%.
"..."
Fuck you too, then.
"You don't know where I'm going?"
That is correct, Player. LAL stands for Lottery And Luck. The process will be completely randomized with billions of options being considered and discarded. With any luck, as the name teases, you may find yourself in a universe you're familiar with.
I twitched in irritation but managed to ask a question that was bothering me rather than yelling in frustration like I truly wanted to. "Will I still remember my past life?" Will I remember this? Whatever the hell this was?
Initialization at 62%! Ahh, don't tell anyone I let you know, but one of the conditions LAL has already chosen is Knowledge of Past Life, so if it does work, you should be able to recall some, if not most of it.
"I-is that thing loading faster, miss...ter? Wait. Just tell me what I should call you?" Did it even have a gender? Probably not. And it would be rude to assume.
The Player may call me 6O! And yes, we're receiving less lag now that the other test souls have been processed through LAL. Initialization for Player at 97%.
"Oh-"
I'm not done-
Initialization at 99%.
"Fuck-"
asking you-
Initialization at 100%.
"You."
questions!

And done. Looking for a beta reader, so hit me up if you're interested. Also, please let me know what you think if you have the time, and feel free to make suggestions too as I've never done a Gamer fanfic before. Edited it a little bit, but errors are to be expected, which is why I'm looking for a beta reader.
