A/N: So this the first time I try writing a Mortal Instruments fanfic so tell me what you think?

Disclaimer: Obviously I do not own the Mortal Instruments series.

The green of the trees swept by too fast for Clarissa's liking as she swayed her head to the music blasting through her earphones, the sky was a bit on the darker side, it looked like it was going to rain, which would not be a surprise since it is the middle of November but she had been so used to warmer places. The past year has been Miami, Rio and Mexico. Saying she moved around a lot would be an understatement.

She shivered slightly as she had not brought a coat with her and mentally cursed herself for it.

"Turn up the heater, Clarissa?" Her attention was pulled when she was asked from the driver's seat. Luke Garroway, Agent of the FBI and in charge of her and her mother's safety was driving the car down the road with one hand on the steering wheel and the other resting comfortably on the side of the window. His dark shades covered his eyes and he was wearing mostly black except for a dark brown leather jacket he wore as often as possible.

Luke was always especially protective of their family, he and her mother were close when they were very young, but then her mother had to move away with her parents and their ties were cut. Luke grew up and became an FBI agent while her mother grew up to be the wife of a shady Law firm owner who beats her and her kids, a quite successful Law form might she add, regrettably.

When her mother decided to get out of Valentine's hold, the cops weren't the people to turn to. Valentine Morgenstern was an infamously famous name in the Law world especially in the underworld, he represented the worst of the worst, making some criminals get out of charges with remarkably reduced sentences or exonerating others, walking out scratch free. And it was not always with good lawyer work alone might she add.

Although he was an exceptional lawyer indeed, she had been told Valentine could probably open up a cult, he was a smooth talker and capable of convincing practically anyone anything he wanted. But he had done his fair share of underground dealings and illegal activities, everything ranging from drug dealings to 'indirect' murder and was still walking around with a clean slate. So needless to say the FBI was interested in taking him down.

But in order to put Valentine away, her mother had to stay with him undercover and provide information to the FBI on all his dealings until they had enough proof. When Valentine found out, he was so furious, the look in his eyes when he found them was something Clarissa had never seen before. The cold unwavering stare, the harshness of it. He would have choked her to death had he had the chance.

She shuddered remembering that night. The worst night of her life. She still had scars all over her body as a constant reminder every time she looked in the mirror.

She remembered her mother had barely dragged her and her brother out of there alive and they had showed up at Luke's doorsteps, knowing he was the only one who could help them. Since that night they had been running and Luke had always kept a watchful eye on them. Providing ID cards, transfer scripts, fake backgrounds resume. He was more of a father figure to Clarissa than her own father had been.

"Clarissa?" Her mother piped up looking at her from the mirror of the seat next to Luke, her eyes worried when she didn't answer.

"Yes" Clarissa answered shortly.

"You excited for your new school kid?" Luke asked, trying to be nice.

"Ecstatic" Clarissa answered dryly if a bit sarcastic, "What's my name this time going to be?"

"Clary Fray" Luke answered.

"A little on the nose, don't you think?" Clarissa scrunched her nose up.

"The agency believes that since Idris' government agency has decided to help and agree with moving you there, we think Valentine won't find you in Europe so we want to make it as close to your reality as possible" Luke answered.

Clarissa turned to her mother "So you're gonna still be named Jocelyn?"

"No, too much of an uncommon name" Her mother answered, "You are speaking to Miranda Fray".

"But I still have to wear a wig?" Clarissa asked.

"You want to be a blonde this time?" Luke joked.

"My dreams have come true" Clarissa answered dryly but with a smile on her face and her mother chuckled. "Tell me again, why would Idris government help us? Not that I am complaining but isn't that against internal affairs or whatever? I thought the government's approach to problems was more: If it ain't my people, it ain't my problem".

"Valentine had been more busy than we thought, he had represented some high rate criminal company CEO there that the government had hoped to put away for good. Obviously Valentine fouled their plans. So they agreed to help settle you in.. on the condition we take him down in a year's time" Luke explained.

"You know we will end up moving again soon, we haven't had any luck in the past eight years, why would this time be any different?" Clarissa asked.

"We will be keeping a close eye on Valentine's associate in Idris and we are hoping to get some info on their activities together. If we stake him out long enough, he will slip up eventually" Luke said, "All we need is proof he had dealings under the table for this law suit, we can at the very least put him away for a couple of years".

"Like we'll even make it up to a year" Clarissa scuffed, crossing her arms over her chest. Sure, we'll see how long it takes for us to pack up and leave again.

Clarissa put the volume up on her iPhone to the maximum to dull out the sound of her mother and Luke's conversation. She knew it was too good to be true. In three months time, it wouldn't matter who her friends were or how good their life would be because Valentine would have found them again and it would all start over again.

Maybe they had a full year to stay here, but that doesn't mean Valentine will wait a whole year to find them again.

Clarissa looked outside again, looking as they started to drive by houses. But it was really the same as before, Idris sure had a lot of green. Trees were everywhere, a very different change from the places she's been to lately which had all been beaches, hot sun, lively cities, people everywhere. Apparently Idris is this tiny dot on the map that isn't really noticeable at all. Very low population as well. It was almost like one city and not an entire country.

But they still had many buildings, they weren't exactly ancient people who still relied on hunting and made fire out of rocks or anything but it definitely moved in a slower pace than she was used to.

And the weather was so damn cold.

And the sky were really cloudy, Clarissa hoped it would rain, she missed the rain a great deal.

The last of the boxes were dropped in her room as one of the FBI agents snarled at her, Alaric she thinks his name is. She heard him mutter something like "All the academy training to help little girls move their stuff".

Clarissa didn't bother to snap at him as she would normally would have because there really was no point. She was tired of this too.

"Clary" Her mother called her, she left her room and walked down the stairs to their new house, it was very old and brown on the inside, the floors were wooden and the paint was pasty but it was a bit big for her and her mother alone. Right down the stairs was a living room, the couches had an orange bright color and a dark wooden table in the middle. Across from it was the kitchen. Very generic with a wooden breakfast table in the middle. It looked like most of the other houses they have been in. Lifeless.

"Yes?" Clarissa answered.

"Come say goodbye to Luke" Her mom said.

"You're leaving?" Clarissa asked and he nodded grimly.

"Yes but I will be back to check up on you soon, you know where we keep the burner phones just in case" Luke said and Clarissa nodded, always had one in her room duct taped on the underside of her bed and on in the bathroom under the sink under the towels, she moved to hug Luke. Of all the moving and new schools, Her mother and Luke were the only constant things in her life.

"I'll miss you" Clarissa said.

"You too, kid" Luke said when she pulled back and went up to her room to give her mother and Luke space.

The closet practically puffed out dust in her face when she opened it and one of the drawers were snapped out of place and carelessly fallen on the drawer under it, she groaned as she started cleaning and organizing her room. When her mother knocked on the door, she turned around to look at her smiling, "Hey, so what do you think?"

"I've never been to Europe so it's nice" Clarissa answered in a clipped tone, not really knowing what to say. She wasn't exactly thrilled but she was used to it, and she didn't want to complain to her mother because she knows that it makes her sad when she does.

"Tomorrow's your first day of school, remember what you're gonna say?" Her mom asked.

"I'm Clarissa Morgenstern and I'm running from a psychopath villain who is my father. Promise you won't tell?" Clarissa answered cheekily but her mother didn't laugh and she sighed, "I'm Clary Fray, I moved here from New York because my mom was offered a job at the hospital here".

"I know moving makes you grumpy so I thought maybe I could make some dinner, we could watch a movie and eat ice cream tonight before your first day at school tomorrow" her mom offered.

"Sure, that's nice" Clarissa nodded.

"Great, I'll get on that. I love you Clarissa" Her mom said and she nodded, "I love you too, Mom".

Clarissa knew tomorrow would be tough, but at least she would still have tonight, tonight she would still be Clarissa, tomorrow she'd be Clary Fray.

Just another name, another person. She knew she had no choice, they couldn't let Valentine get to them. The last time he did almost caught them was the last time she saw her brother, Jonathan.

She felt her eyes tear up as she remembered him. He was only fourteen, a year older than her at the time. She realized that in her mind he will always be fourteen, that would be the last memory of him in her mind and each time she saw herself in the mirror, older by the day she couldn't picture Jon like that. Every time they moved to a new place or she learned something new or hit a new milestone her thoughts would go back to Jon, knowing he would never have a chance to do any of that.

She missed, her mother did too. For two weeks after his death, her mother didn't say a word, didn't leave her room. Luke would bring them food but she could only muster a few swallows at best. That was the darkest time for them, in all her life, all the times Valentine had hurt her or her mother or Jon. They were never as broken as the day Valentine killed Jonathan.

When her mother was done making dinner Clarissa was almost done organizing her room. Her thought running wildly and she decided to grab the set of DVD with her.

At dinner she and her mother joked and laughed like always, her mother would start work tomorrow but it was a short day, she knew that soon her mother would have long shifts and would be gone more often than not and she was used to it. The witness protection program could only help out so much. Once she was eighteen she would get a job as well.

"No sweetie, you were in the wrong" her mother laughed.

"I was not" Clarissa argued.

"You called the teacher fat" her mother said.

"And she was but I wouldn't have pointed it out had she not told me a billionth time that I should eat more and I look anorexic. So I'm short and small, that's not my fault" Clarissa argued back.

"Well you could have ignored her"

"Or I could have kicked her, I think my actions were not terrible considering I could have done and said a lot worse" Clarissa argued and her mom shook her head.

"You're so stubborn and argumentative" her mother commented.

"Are you shocked I am basically you with more charm" Clarissa joked, her mother's jaw dropped in shock and she took the towel closest to her and smacked it across Clarissa's arm.

Clarissa laughed as her mother did that again and again, muttering 'More charming, ha?' and she finally put her hands up "Okay okay, I give up. You win".

Her mother scuffed teasingly, "Serves you right".

"And this is why people think I am more charming than you" Clarissa muttered, relishing in her mother's annoyed fake scuff and got up laughing as she said, "I'll start on the popcorn, get the movie ready, oh and the ice cream".

Beep, Beep, Beep.

Clarissa eyes shot open quickly and from the shock fell out of the couch making her mother stir besides her. "Why are you always so loud in the morning?" Her mother groaned as she adjusted her blanket and moves to the other side.

"Sorry if me falling to my death disturbed your sleep" Clarissa said annoyed as she looked for her phone to turn the alarm off.

"You're always dramatic as well in the morning" Her mother groaned. Clarissa finally found the phone and put it right under her mother's ears so she would wake up as well.

"As opposed to your ray of sunshine?" Clarissa said sarcastically and her mother nodded in her sleep, ignoring the beeping of the alarm for a few minutes before sighing and taking the blanket off of her and opening her eyes, looking around she registered where they were. "Did we fall asleep during Eat, Pray, Love again?"

"Mmhmm" Clarissa only nodded before getting up. "After I ate my weight in Chocolate Mint ice cream".

"I'll start on breakfast, you take a shower" Her mother said and Clarissa nodded.

After a quick shower and getting into her clothes, she wore black jeans and boots and a purple top with long sleeves, she would have to buy some sweaters and jackets while she was here. She pulled all the bits of her red hair up and pulled on a blonde wig. It suited her well actually but there was nothing she could do about the freckles.

When she walked down the stairs her mother was already in her uniform, she was a secretary for the hospital in Idris. Which apparently was the only one in Idris since it was such a small country. The smell of scrambled eggs, toast and fresh coffee filled her senses and she smiled for the first time since she arrived here.

"Hey" Clarissa approached her mother.

"Just in time" she smiled, they both looked a each other before chanting simultaneously "Coffee". Clarissa took out two cups and poured the Coffee then looked at her mother expectantly before they both said in unison "Two sugars".

She laughed slightly handing her mother the sweet coffee, and she handed her toast. "Thank you". They had fallen into a routine, having lived together alone for so many years they were so used to each other's habits.

"So are you excited?" her mother asked as she sat down taking a sip of her coffee, Clarissa sat down as well eating her toast.

"Nothing I haven't done before" Clarissa said, her mother stiffened, squirming in her place.

"Clary, I am so sorry that you have to do this and I am so proud of you for always being strong" her mother said reaching her hand out to rest on Clarissa's wrist. "But maybe you should start entertaining the idea that maybe we will be staying here for a while".

"So what should I start signing up for book clubs now?" Clarissa said sipping her coffee.

"That, maybe have a few friends, art classes, a boyfriend" her mother suggested.

"Right, sure. Because that is the sole essence to settling in, a boyfriend. By the way have you asked out Luke yet?" Clarissa raised her eyebrows (yes both since she was incapable of raising only on), her mother squeaked, her cheeks turning as red as her hair. She caught herself and coughed slightly before saying "I have no idea what you're talking about".

"Mom, you like Luke and he likes you. Why else would he help us all the time?" Clarissa pointed out.

"It's his job" her mom argued, "And besides, it's different for me. You need to have friends to remain sane".

"And you are past that point?" Clarissa jokes but her mother was not amused.

"Fine, I'll play nice with others" Clarissa sighed agreeing.

"Unless someone is being mean to you then you use that right hook Luke taught you" Her mother said.

"You really mean it?" Clarissa looked up hopeful and her mother laughed.

"Yes Clary. Come on, let me take you to school" Once they finished their food, she cleared the dishes in the dishwasher and took her bag with her. "Remember I'm driving you back today but soon I will start taking longer shifts, so you'll have to take the bus or walk. Remind me to go shopping for coats and umbrellas".

Clarissa nodded, she paid attention on their way to school so she can know the way back which seemed like a nice long walk. The car ride was mostly silent and Clary didn't mind, she had a chance to clear her head. She was nervous which was ridiculous since she has done this a million times already. She knew the first day jitters too well.

When she reached school, she took a deep breath and sighed longingly after. Nothing she hasn't done before, this should be easy.

"I love you honey" Her mother called out.

"Love you, too" Clarissa said as she stepped out of the car. She looked down at her papers as she began walking in the direction of the school, Hello Clary Fray.

A/N: So it is a little short but tell me what you guys think of the first chapter.
