Instead of working on Chiisai Tenshi, Shukaku's Shadow, A Winner's Game, or even the second gift fic I'm supposed to be writing: I have been derailed by this plot. It wouldn't leave me alone until I started on it. I even have three different directions it could go. This particular direction is the furthest along, I'm not even sure if I'll finish the others. I'm posting this fic because there is not enough of them.

Chapter One

A New Home, A New Aunt

Hadrian James Potter lived with his mother's sister Petunia and her family for as long as he could remember. Uncle Vernon and Dudley were both large and aggressive. Dudley was not that much older than Hadrian, but it was already apparent he was trying to out due his father in the size department. To make things worse, they hated everything about Petunia's nephew.

Life was harsh. Hadrian was given chores to complete and would be denied food if he did not finish. At first it was things like picking up the messes left by Dudley; once he had learned to walk. When he was three he was expected to learn the difference between flowers and weeds and would have to weed Petunia's garden. More and more tasks were added to his chore list. The punishments for failure grew more and more harsh. And this would have continued he guessed if it wasn't for the visitor.

Hadrian had not seen the visitor at first. He had been locked in Dudley's second bedroom, surprising him as he had thought it would be his cupboard. He could hear the muffled voices from downstairs. Listening to the rise and fall of conversation Hadrian drifted: waiting to be able to leave the room. But presently he grew bored and looked around; The then nearly four year old finding a stash of toddler books and had looked through them.

Hearing someone approach he quickly hid the books and moved to the window. When aunt Petunia had opened the door he was looking outside.

"Come along Hadrian." She had said. The tone of voice startled him. She had never spoken to him like that. It was almost: friendly?

He obediently followed the woman down the stairs to find another woman with blond hair and green eyes like his own. She was well dressed and had an easy smile on her face.

"This is Mari, your aunt and my older sister." Petunia introduced.

"It's nice to finally see you again Hadrian. You were only this big when I saw you last." The woman smiled at the boy.

"Nice to meet you too ma'am." He murmured. Remembering the manners aunt Petunia insisted he learn.

"Call me aunt Mari. We'll be spending the next couple of months together."

Hadrian had looked confusedly at aunt Petunia. The woman looked unsurprised. In fact, she looked as if someone had answered her prayers. This look made Hadrian nervous. What was going on? Why was aunt Petunia looking like that? Looks like that normally weren't good for him. Was this new person really his aunt? Were had she been if she was? Was she like aunt Petunia? Were things going to get worse?

He had been so deep in thoughts the next thing he knew was that he was in the backseat of a car. Beside him was a backpack holding his stuff. The woman who insisted he call her aunt Mari was driving. And there were no Dursley's around. Things were changing, and they were changing fast.

Aunt Mari stopped at a restraunt and helped Hadrian out of the booster seat he was sitting in. She took his hand and led him inside. Hadrian was still a little dazed from the new experiences. He would continue to be so as he was given pizza for dinner while she ate a steak. She would then go shopping and buy him new clothes and a few toys. She also got him some books like the ones he had seen in Dudley's second bedroom.

Soon they had arrived at a three story home. It was in the country: flowers, fruits, vegetables and herbs were planted in gardens around the cozy looking house. A few buildings were scattered around the property. It was amazing.

"This is where we'll be staying for now." Aunt Mari said. She led Hadrian up the wooden porch and into the cream colored house with light blue trim. They entered a room with benches to either side of the door and shelves and coat hooks on the walls to either side.

Hadrian followed aunt Mari's lead as she slipped off her shoes and put on some sock-like things. She hung up their coats before leading the way. The door on the left wall led to a sitting room. Couches and chairs were placed around the edges of the room. a table with cushions sat in the middle, before a fireplace. Above the fireplace was pictures of aunt Petunia and a red haired woman with eyes like Hadrian's.

"Your mother." Aunt Mari said, seeing his surprised look. Hadrian only nodded, following her through an arch that was covered by dark blue curtains.

They entered the dining room. The table could fit eight people comfortably. Though big the room was still as cozy as the rest of the house. Another arch in the right wall led to the kitchen. To the immediate right of the arch was the door to the entrance room. Across from them was a third door. The kitchen itself was spacious and held everything a master chef would need.

Following aunt Mari through the kitchen he listened as she explained different things about the house. They entered a bare room with one more door and what at first looked like an alcove.

"That door leads out back." Aunt Mari explained. She opened the curtains on the window beside the door and Hadrian could see in the fading light some of the building he had seen from the front. He could see a pond and a gazebo. It looked very beautiful to the small boy. The shadows of the evening giving off a mysterious vibe to the entire scene.

"That is the stairs to the basement. My workshops are down there so please don't go down alone. I have the door at the bottom locked." Aunt Mari continued. She gestured to the alcove looking spot. Hadrian only nodded and followed her back through the kitchen into the entrance room.

Aunt Mari briefly showed Hadrian the door on the right wall. Which turned out to be a study. She led him upstairs and briefly showed him the library. She also showed him her room, in case he needed her. Then she led him up a fourth flight of stairs and into the room on the left.

Hadrian had been surprised there was another flight of stairs. But the room she had shown him was the best part of the house to him. It was a bedroom. The bed was sunken into the floor, like a nest. There was shelves and chests along the walls. To their immediate right was another door that led to a closet and bathroom. Windows arched overhead, letting in natural light.

"This will be your room." Aunt Mari said.

"If you want to change anything just let me know."

"No. Thanks. It's great." Hadrian replied insistently. Aunt Mari smiled down at him.

"I keep animals. Across the hall is where the birds live. You can visit them, but please be nice. They can be vicious to those who hurt them. The door downstairs remains closed if not in use. I'll leave you to unpack, I know it's been a long day. If you need me you can find me either in my office or my room. If not, I'll see you tomorrow."

"Night aunt Mari." Hadrian replied. He was a bit surprised to find himself being hugged. He stiffened before sinking into it with a sigh.

"Good night Little One."

It did not take Hadrian long to unpack. He put away his clothes first, still surprised about the new things. Reverently he ran his small hands over the fabrics. He then turned to his pack and retrieved the few treasures he had. Gently he placed them in a chest in the far left corner across from the door. He then placed his new toys in another chest and the books in a bookshelf.

Hadrian nervously made his way into the bathroom and took a shower. He was jumpy the entire time, waiting to be pulled out and yelled at. It didn't happen and he found himself in brand new pajamas that fit. He climbed into bed and sighed happily. His little nest bed was just as soft and comfortable as it had looked. He sank down and closed his eyes.

He was on a familiar beach. One which he had seen every night in his dreams for as long as he could remember. He grinned as he heard the shout and found himself once again being hugged.

"Sora." He cried happily.

"Hadrian." Sora replied. Blue eyes sparkled down at him and brunette hair stuck everywhere like Hadrian's own. Sora was taller and the coloring was off. But they had the same bone structure and noses.

"How are you Little One?" Sora asked. Hadrian only grinned up at him.

"A visitor came to my relatives house today. Aunt Petunia said she was my aunt Mari. She took me away and let me have pizza for dinner. I have my own clothes and toys. She gave me my own room." Hadrian rambled. He told Sora about everything, not leaving a single detail out.

Once he was done Sora told Hadrian about his own day. His parents had taken him and Riku to the play island. The play island was were Hadrian and Sora met in their dreams. Sora and Riku had played in the water and had just had a great day. They had had a picnic in the treehouse for dinner.

"We got to row for a bit. Soon we'll be able to come here by ourselves." Sora said excitedly.

"That's great." Hadrian beamed. The two boys lay in the sand and chatted away together.

"I wish we could meet in real life." Hadrian sighed as their time together started to end.

"Me too." Sora agreed. They hugged and then faded into wakefulness.

Hadrian changed into a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. He made his way downstairs, careful to close the door like aunt Mari had said. Reaching the dining room he found the woman already up.

"Good morning Hadrian." She greeted.

"Morning aunt Mari." Hadrian returned. He took the seat she motioned to and began to eat the plate of food handed to him. It was still strange how his life had changed. But he refused to allow the Dursley's actions dictate his perception of this new person. Unless she started acting like them he would give her the benefit of the doubt.

After breakfast aunt Mari had Hadrian follow her into her office. He took the chair motioned to and waited as she sat behind her desk. The chair was comfy and the room was as homey as the rest of the house. Shelves of books and cabinets of paper lined the wall while the desk, chairs and a sofa sat in the middle.

Aunt Mari set her chin in her hands before speaking.

"Petunia did not tell you about me before yesterday didn't she?"

"No. She didn't." Hadrian murmured.

"Petunia is a jealous woman. When I was offered a spot at a special school she grew cold towards me. She tried to keep your mother and I apart. But then sweet Lily had gotten the same invitation. Petunia grew spiteful. Angry she was not invited too."

For several hours Hadrian listened as aunt Mari revealed the Magical World. About how things were a lot different in that community. It was a lot to take in, especially as he had grown up with those who refused to even say the word. Magic was the foulest curse word in the Dursley's opinion. But after she demonstrated a few spells he had no reason not to believe her. The idea of the Magical World was a fascinating one. And yet he was wary. Why was he left with aunt Petunia if he was a part of this world? Aunt Mari told him she would explain when he was older. She then introduced him to her house-elves. Something that took time for Hadrian to get used too. Though her explanation on their existance helped. Apparently they lived off the magic of the bond between wizard and elf, being able to use the magic in ways wizards could not.

By the time the conversation was done it was lunch time. They had soup and sandwiches for lunch. Aunt Mari had a salad to go with it, and Hadrian took a little too. They did not speak while eating, but once done aunt Mari spoke again.

"I return to work tomorrow. Pipsy, Lipsy and Quipsy will be looking after you while I'm away. However, the rest of the day I shall be looking for a tutor for you. Petunia and I have agreed to send you to a boarding school during the term and having you stay with me during the summer. Petunia is still your guardian, but this way you will hardly ever see her. The tutor will focus on the magical aspect of your education."

"Yes aunt Mari." Hadrian replied. He wondered why she wasn't his guardian, but refrained from asking. Mari smiled at him.

"It'll be hard, but I am confidant in your abilities."

Her words caused a glow in Hadrian's chest. He spent the rest of the day exploring the rooms he had not seen the night before. Soon enough he found himself in the room across from his bedroom. Remembering what aunt Mari had said he was gentle with the birds. He lost track of time while petting them and was shocked when Pipsy popped into the room.

"Young Master is needing to get ready for dinner." She squeaked.

Looking down Hadrian found himself covered in feathers and other stuff. Blushing he went to his bathroom and took a shower. Pipsy laid out some sweat pants and a clean shirt. He dressed and went back downstairs.

Dinner was another quiet affair. They had lassagnia, salad and home made breadsticks. For dessert they had a peach cobbler. Hadrian could barely move after eating so much. Aunt Mari didn't seem to want to move either as she leant back in her own chair.

"Tomorrow while I'm at work Kadri has been hired to tutor you. Once I'm home I'll show you around the grounds."

"Okay." Hadrian murmured.

"Please wait for me to show you. I don't want you to get lost, and there are a lot of places to get lost in."

"I will." Hadrian murmured.

Hadrian and Mari spoke for a bit more. She then led him to the library and read him a book. With his full stomach and the soothing voice it did not take Hadrian long before he was out once again. Once again he and Sora spent the night chatting. They played in the water together. Laughter filled the dream and when he woke he was smiling.

He dressed and ate breakfast. Then he was introduced to Mr. Kadri. Who insisted Hadrian just call him Kadri.

"No Mister's. I'm not that old. Besides Kadri's my given name, not my family one." He had said.

Kadri was in his mid to late twenties. He smiled a lot and was very friendly. He also refused to tell Hadrian his family name. Though honestly the boy hadn't pushed too hard. He was also a firm tutor, pushing Hadrian to do his best. When he got over some difficult lessons Kadri would smile proudly at him and give him a reward.

"I knew you could do it Little One." He would say, his voice full of pride. Hadrian would beam up at him, happy he could make him proud. All the frustration would leave and a warm sense of accomplishment would fill him. It felt like having soup on a cold winters night, warm and satisfying.

When she returned home aunt Mari spoke briefly to Kadri. He left and she took Hadrian out back. She showed him the greenhouses first. There were four of them, separated into five sections. One for fruit, one for vegetables, one for flowers, one for herbs and one for magical plants. Each greenhouse was for the four seasons, though the magical plant sections were different. They were separated by their dangerousness. The first greenhouse holding the docile plants while the fourth section contained the most dangerous. Hadrian could not enter these areas. In fact aunt Mari herself couldn't. Quipsy would tend to them most of the time and a professional botanist would stop by to check up on them.

After the greenhouse they visited the stables. They held both magical and nonmagical horses. Aunt Mari saddled a placid mare and rode with Hadrian throughout the grounds. They past beside the pond and the gazebo. They spent several hours riding through the grounds. It was all amazing. Hadrian could not remember feeling so content and happy as he was these past couple of days.

Days passed and Hadrian found himself falling into a routine. He spent his days learning from Kadri. Aunt Mari would come home and talk to Kadri before spending the evenings with Hadrian. Sometimes they rode the horses, sometimes they would walk. Other times they would only go down to the lake where they would play in the water. One thing was the same though. They spent this time outside. They would have dinner and aunt Mari would do paperwork. Hadrian would do something quietly at this time until bedtime. At night he would talk to Sora and play with him. He was finally given the childhood he should have had.

After settling in Hadrian found himself misbehaving several times. This was a terrifying time, afraid he would be sent back to the Dursley's. But although she would take away an item for some time or not allow him to participate in an activity aunt Mari never seemed too angry. She never hit him, raise her hand at him or deny him food. In the end Hadrian settled down, assured of his spot in his knew life. He cried on Sora that night, relieved he found someone who seemed to love him and not see him as a burden. Sora held him, supporting him as he had done for as long as either could remember.

Hadrian's fourth birthday dawned and he was not sure what to expect. The Dursley's had always ignored his birthday, however aunt Mari kept hinting that she had something planned. He dressed and went downstairs to find the table laiden with food. Towers of pancakes were the first things he saw. Blackberries, blueberries, kiwi, mangos, peaches, plumbs, raspberries and strawberries were chopped up and in bowls on the table. He eagerly climbed into his chair and chose his first topping. Aunt Mari plated his choice and cut his pancakes for him. She then chose her own toppings and they began to eat.

Aunt Mari had taken the day off of work. They spent the day at an amusement park. Hadrian had a blast as he tried the rides he was big enough to go on. They played games and ate sweets. For dinner they had pizza and then aunt Mari took Hadrian to the cinema. After which she brought him home and they had a peaches and cream cake. Hadrian opened his presents and was given more toys and books. Kadri even got him his own little sketchpad and pencils. It was the best birthday he had had. Any insecurities he may have had ended then and there. That night he resolved to forget about the Dursley's.
