A/N: Hey look as promised there was a quick update! Y'all gotta stop doubting me so much.
Harry leaned back against the waiting room chair and tried his best not to fall asleep. He had been working the graveyard shift for the past three nights working on a case that might be linked to human trafficking. He hated that he was working awful hours but he always had the gratification of knowing he was doing something worthwhile.
The main downside of his messed up schedule was his inability to see Daphne. Since they worked basically opposite hours at the moment they hadn't seen each other since the other night. He still felt like he was floating on air from the events that had transpired. Daphne had said she loved him. And maybe just as good was the fact that right after that he had the best sex of his life.
Sometimes being Harry Potter wasn't so bad after all. His reminiscing was brought to halt quickly by a cup of water being thrust unceremoniously into his face. He looked up and saw Susan Bones standing there with a grumpy look on her face.
"I don't understand how you can look so giddy all the time when we've been working until six in the morning for three days straight."
Harry just grinned as he sipped his water. Susan was definitely not a morning person and so waking up only four hours after she had gone to bed wasn't treating her favorably.
"You didn't have to come you know. These follow up appointments are pretty much useless."
Harry was currently waiting in Saint Mungo's waiting for a follow up appointment. It was standard auror procedure to have a check in one week after encountering an unknown curse or hex. They almost never amounted to anything because bluntly, any serious curses didn't let someone live for a week unharmed. Even slow acting curses showed signs that the trained healers could pick up on.
Still, Harry either had to show up to this appointment or deal with his boss lecturing him on the importance of keeping himself healthy or some other bullshit. He and Susan usually went together since the appointments were inevitably boring. Since they worked the same schedule it wasn't like they had better things to do anyway.
"You came with me to my last follow up where we had to wait for three hours so I figured it was only fair," Susan said with a scowl.
"Well try not to sound too supportive about it."
Somehow Susan's scowl deepened further than Harry thought possible and he figured it was best to drop the sarcasm.
"Seriously though Susan thanks for coming with me."
His partner rolled her eyes at his thanks.
"Can't we just sit here quietly until I can go home and sleep?"
Harry was about to respond when Susan raised her hand to stop him.
"The irony is not lost on me that I'm asking you for a quiet day. You better not mention it."
Harry grinned and made a motion of zipping his lip. They sat in comfortable silence for another ten minutes before Harry was called back to the exam room. Inside, the healer that had dealt with his injury to begin with was waiting patiently. They went through all the standard checks before she began a series of complicated brain scans.
As she went through more and more checks a frown slowly started to appear on her face. Harry knew that look from seeing it on Madame Pomfrey a million times. Something was wrong.
"Alright Mr. Potter here's the deal. Your brain is functioning perfectly fine, but the memory scans are bringing up some strange results. You seem to have memories that aren't yours sitting in your head."
Harry breathed a sigh of relief.
"Oh those aren't an issue. I have memories remaining from when Voldemort was around. I used to be able to see some of his thoughts."
The healer shook her head.
"I've read your medical records and I saw that you had some memories from Voldemort, but these are a separate set of memories. They don't belong to another person. It's almost like they were created in your own head, yet somehow they're not yours."
Harry was too shocked to respond. What did that even mean? Luckily, Susan seemed to have read his mind.
"I'm sorry but how is that possible. Even implanted memories show signs of whoever put them there."
The healer nodded.
"I'm not sure either. Sit tight I'm going to grab our best mind healer."
Harry and Susan sat in silence. How was it that Harry had made up memories that didn't belong to him? It had to be connected to the curse he had taken a week ago right? There were so many questions bouncing around his head that he was getting a headache.
Daphne was an unspeakable. Maybe she would be able to figure out what happened to him. He had never heard of anything like this. The unspeakable dealt mostly in things unheard of. It should be right up her alley. After a few more minutes the door opened and an older wizard walked in with the first healer.
"Hello my name is healer Tully. I hear that you're having some memory problems."
"Yes sir that's what I've been told."
The old healer sat down next to the examination table where Harry was seated.
"Well let's see if we can get to the bottom of this."
Harry sat patiently as the healer began to run test after test on him. Countless spells washed over him as his brain was scanned again and again. After almost thirty minutes of work, healer Tully finally leaned back and looked contemplative.
"Well I can say with confidence that these fake memories stem from the curse that hit you a week ago."
Harry nodded. He'd expected that much. It still didn't answer what happened though.
"As to the nature of the curse that's much more complicated. I understand that the wizard who cursed you isn't available for questioning?"
Susan looked sheepish at that. After seeing Harry taken down by a curse her response had been a little out of proportion. She had sent the attacker through a wall with a little too much force and he ended up breaking his neck. Hopefully it wouldn't come back to bite them now.
"No sir he didn't survive the battle."
The healer nodded at this.
"Well we might never know exactly the intent of the curse but we have the effects figured out pretty well."
Harry waited patiently as the healer seemed to jot down some notes as he thought. Looking back up he continued.
"Your memories were all created a week ago, but they fit into your timeline starting just over three months ago. It looks like they've covered your existing memories but they didn't replace them, which means the damage should be reversible."
"Well that's great! Let's do it then."
Healer Tully chuckled.
"Hold your horses there son I would like to figure out exactly what this curse was meant to do first before we take any rash action. On the off chance that there are any side effects it's best if we figure them out beforehand."
"So what do we do next?"
"Well I'd like to start by showing you all of the memories you have that have been modified and hopefully we can figure out what the purpose was in modifying these memories."
It took a little while to sort through all of the fake memories. They seemed to play in fast forward, showing Harry what they were without taking all the time to relive every instant. As he watched the memories he slowly began to feel his stomach drop.
He was getting more and more nauseous with every memory he watched. They were all him with Daphne. Every single date they went on. Every time they flirted in the department of mysteries. It all was flashing in front of his eyes.
Harry opened his eyes as the memories finally stopped. He could feel tears running down his face. Susan looked concerned but the healer seemed understanding. He had been seeing Harry's memories as he forced him to relive them and he seemed to gather the idea of what was happening.
Now it made sense why Daphne had acted so weird when he showed up at her apartment a week ago and the night after at dinner. Slowly Harry felt rage building up in his chest. She knew that something was wrong with him and she just went with it. What sick person would do that to someone else. He had told her that he loved her and she was just taking advantage of him to get a shot at the boy who lived. Harry felt like he had to hit something or curse someone. Instead he took a deep breath. He was shaking with anger but he reigned it in.
"Show me the real memories."
"I think it's best if we try to figure out the reasoning-"
"No!" Harry barked. "Show me what really happened."
The healer nodded and once again began forcing memories through his mind. Harry watched as he was back in the department of mysteries. He saw Daphne and felt his rage trying to bubble over once again. His memories came flooding back quickly.
They had never been on any dates or even held a serious conversation. They talked politely when we was there to work on the cloaks and there may have even been a bit of flirting. But as far as he could tell Daphne was just a workplace crush to him. He may have even wound up asking her out at some point but he certainly wasn't three months into dating her like she had let him believe.
Harry's head was in jumbles. He tried thinking back to two weeks ago and not one but two sets of memories came to him. It was an awful feeling. Like twice as much information was forcing itself through his head at the same time. He forced himself to refocus.
"Why would someone do this?"
The healer seemed to sense that Harry was at the verge of losing it and spoke in a calming voice.
"At this point I only can guess but I think I might be pretty close. There are spells often used in place of an oblivion by someone who isn't gifted in the mind arts. Instead of replacing memories themselves, a witch or wizard could just cover up memories with artificial ones that the victims own brain would create."
Susan placed a hand on Harry's arm as he continued to silently shake in anger. He tried to calm down as he listened to the healer.
"It would seem that someone was trying to obscure your memories of the department of mysteries, but instead it changed your memories of one of its workers. Your own brain probably built memories around your intentions towards this girl."
"Why would it do that?"
"In my limited experience with these types of curses, they attempt to create believable memories so that the victim is less likely to notice the changes."
Susan was sitting and trying to figure out exactly what memories Harry had had replaced when a light went on in her head.
"Harry wait I just realized. When you were here last week I interrogated most of that group. One of them admitted that they had planned to steal the new cloaks you were working on. They probably were hoping to make you forget about them entirely."
The healer nodded his head at this.
"That would make sense. Like I said this curse is for novices in the mind arts and is therefore very inaccurate when targeting memories. It would have a hard time making you forget three months of work but it could relatively easily create memories for a girl that you had minimal interaction with."
The more Harry listened to the healer the more he realized one thing. He didn't give a fuck what someone was trying to do to his mind. He only cared that he had been lied to and tricked by that bitch Daphne Greengrass.
Susan and healer Tully continued talking but it became a dull buzzing to Harry as blood pounded in his ears. His mind was aching as it tried to sort out his two conflicting memories of the last three months. He tried to hate Daphne but every time he thought about her a memory of them kissing at a restaurant or watching a movie curled up together would pop into his head. It reminded him of when his scar used to force him to watch Voldemort torturing or killing people.
He wanted to be in control of his mind but fake memories were forcing there way in. Harry stood up suddenly, clearly shocking Susan who had been deep in conversation right next to him. Paying no attention to anyone around him he stormed out of the room. The blood pounding through his head left a roaring in his ears and drowned out everything around him. He vaguely heard Susan calling his name but he didn't care.
The minute he reached the lobby he apparated to the ministry of magic. He stocked straight down to the department of mysteries and flung the door open. As a fifth year he had been completely clueless at how to navigate the confusing set of doors but by now he was an expert. He entered the offices where he knew Daphne would be sitting in her private office. It was soundproofed and had no windows which was perfect because he was sure whatever happened next wouldn't be pretty.
As he walked Dennis Creevey saw him and tried to walk up. Harry heard him say something about the cloaks but he walked past without a word. Dennis must have seen his expression because he didn't try to follow. Harry walked straight up to the wooden door with the name plate reading Greengrass on it.
He hated that he even knew where this door was. He hated how he knew her schedule and knew that she wouldn't have taken lunch yet so she'd still be working in her office. He shouldn't know any of this but he did. He knew it the same way he knew that Daphne liked to lay in the grass during the summer and take a nap after a picnic. The same way he knew that she kept a list of addresses by her fireplace for floo calls because her memory was awful when it came to numbers.
Every little memory of her only served to make him that much madder. How much of it was even true. It didn't matter now because the next thing he knew he was throwing open the door to her office and slamming it behind him. Daphne looked up at him and flinched as she saw the look in his eyes. She had to know what he was there for.
"How dare you?"
Daphne shook her head, clearly trying to make sense of the words. The fact that she had the audacity to act confused enraged Harry even more.
"You fucking lied to me. You even told me you loved me. You don't even fucking know me."
Understanding dawned on Daphne's face but her expression quickly switched to one of fear. Part of him hated seeing that look on her face and knowing it came from him. Then the rational side of him remembered that he shouldn't feel that way for her. He shouldn't have any feelings besides disgust and anger.
"Wait Harry I can explain!"
"Can you? How the fuck do you explain lying to me like that?"
Daphne started to stand up with tears in her eyes. She made a motion to walk towards him but Harry raised his wand at her.
"Don't you fucking dare come near me."
Tears were falling freely down her face now. Harry had to admit she was an excellent actress. She looked like she was on the verge of a breakdown as much as he did.
"Please I didn't mean to do anything wrong! Just give me a minute I'll explain."
Harry growled in anger. "You had every chance to explain! You had all the time in the world to do the right thing and you didn't even try!"
"I did try!" Daphne yelled out with a sob.
"I tried to tell you at dinner and I tried to tell you the night after but it wasn't that easy!"
"How much easier could it have been? I showed up to your apartment as a stranger why did you even let me in?"
Daphne was shaking as she stood behind her desk. Tears were coming in streams now as she tried to take control of her shaky voice.
"I don't know okay! You seemed so confident and at first I didn't know if maybe something was wrong with me. You seemed like you knew me and I thought maybe I had lost my memories or something and I didn't want to risk losing you."
Harry grabbed at his hair in frustration.
"Risk losing me? You never fucking had me to begin with. And you kept it going."
"I didn't know what was going on I was just confused and everything felt so right I couldn't stop it."
Harry froze and turned to her.
"You said at first you didn't know if something was wrong with you. So obviously you figured it out at some point. You said you wanted to tell me at dinner so you fucking knew. Forget the first night you could've told me at any other time but you didn't!"
"I know Harry I'm sorry I just didn't know how to say it!"
"Maybe saying that it was all fucking fake and we weren't together would've been a good start!"
Daphne looked as if she could barely stand anymore. She wanted to run to him and hold him and just have him forgive her but she knew she couldn't do that. She knew this was going to come eventually and it was all her fault.
"I'm sorry Harry! I'm so sorry I should've told you I know that but everything was so perfect and I was just scared that you would hate me!"
Harry brought his eyes up to meet hers with a cold fury. She felt her breath catch as she saw something she'd never seen in those eyes. Before she'd seen passion and love burning there but now it had changed. They still burned but they burned with anger. A fire that promised destruction and pain to whoever was caught in that gaze. That must be what criminals saw when they looked into his eyes.
"Well good going. Because now I do hate you."
That was the last straw for Daphne. She collapsed on the ground in tears as she watched Harry turn towards the door. She had never felt so cold and empty inside. She had felt the cruciatus during the war while she was at Hogwarts. She would give anything if she was feeling that pain again instead of this. Harry reached for the doorknob and she managed to let out one last plea.
"I love you Harry!"
Harry turned back slowly and once again fixed her in his gaze. It didn't look fiery anymore though. It was as cold as ice.
"You don't love me. You don't even know me. You're just another girl who wanted a shot with the chosen one and you'd do anything to get it."
Daphne suddenly felt herself getting angry at the man in front of her. She didn't give a damn about who the chosen one was or the boy who lived or whatever they called him now. She had never cared about anything like that and it hurt to hear him reduce her to some little fan girl.
"Fuck you."
"Excuse me?"
"I said fuck you." Daphne was building up steam as she continued. "You show up out of nowhere and tell me you're in love with me and when I find out that somehow I really do love you back you act like I'm some desperate whore who just can't wait for a shot at the chosen one."
Harry looked at her as if trying to figure out exactly how to respond. Daphne still had tears in her eyes but now she was truly angry as well.
"You're right that what I did was wrong. I should've told you the truth about your memories. But I did tell you the truth about one thing. I love you Harry Potter and you can't just take that away from me and act like I don't matter. I know that you don't love me anymore and that you don't know who I am, but the man I've known for the last week is still the man I love."
Harry seemed to find his voice as anger once again took over.
"You don't know anything about me. You don't know how confusing it is to have all these memories of dates that never happened. Every time I look at you I see a hundred different moments where I was falling in love with you and none of them are real. You don't understand that feeling. And to know that you lied to me on top of all that. How the hell would expect me to handle that?"
"I don't know okay?! I don't know how you sort through those memories and the lies. I know two things though. I know that I'm sorry for lying to you and that it will never happen again."
Harry scoffed. "Some comfort those are now."
"Stop that was only the first one."
Harry didn't know why but he waited for her to continue. He should've walked out a long time ago but he was waiting for the one other earth shattering truth that Daphne was so desperate to tell him. Maybe it was the fake memories messing with his feelings but he couldn't just walk away. So instead he listened.
"I also know that the past week with you has been the best week of my life. And if we can have a real relationship that's even half as amazing as the fake one we just had, I would do anything to give it a shot."
"You had your shot. You should've just told me the truth to begin with. It's too late for another shot now."
Daphne felt the tears slowly beginning to slide down her face once again. That was it. She'd played her last card. In truth she'd known all along that she didn't deserve another chance. Now she had to let Harry go for good. She summoned the last of her courage and stood as tall as she could. Hopefully she looked more composed than she felt.
"Well then I'm sorry for what I did to you. And no matter how much you might hate me for it just know that I do love you Harry Potter. Hopefully there's someone else out there for you that is better at showing it."
Daphne turned around waited for the door to click open. She didn't want to have to look at the anger or disgust on Harry's face anymore. She knew he didn't love her but that didn't mean she wanted to see it written all over his face.
If she had been turned around she would have seen a much different scenario than the one she imagined. Harry wasn't sure how to feel. Unfortunately she was right about everything. She was right that what she did was wrong. She should never have allowed their relationship to continue. She was also right that the past week had been the best of his life.
His memories of the last three months might mean nothing, but he had seen the look on Daphne's face when she told him that she loved him. That did mean something. She wasn't lying about that. So he didn't open the door and storm out. Instead he reached forward and grabbed Daphne's arm.
Daphne was shocked when she felt that familiar hand grab her arm and start to turn her around. That was nothing though compared to the even more familiar set of lips that were suddenly pressed against hers. It didn't even take her a full second to wrap her arms around Harry's neck and deepen the kiss. Suddenly though Harry pulled back and she felt her heart drop into her stomach. He stared at her with those breathtaking green eyes that had gotten her into so much trouble. She didn't see any anger in those eyes though. They were the eyes she knew and loved once again. She finally decided to break the silence.
"So what now?"
Harry grinned as he looked at the woman that he somehow still loved.
"I think now we start over. Daphne, what would you say to dinner and a real first date tonight?"
"I would love that."
A/N: So there you go. I know this wasn't a particularly long story or anything but this idea had been gnawing at me for a while. Hopefully y'all found it entertaining or at the very least mildly interesting. For those of you bugging me about it yes I plan on updating my other story as well. Stay good.
