Chapter 1: Swept Away
Marinette stretched up in her bed and yawned. Yesterday had been tiring, hawkmoth had set off another akuma which had taken out a lot of her energy. Sometimes being ladybug and marinette at the same time was hard, but she still managed-for the most part.
She warily opened her eyes, and the first thing that came to view was one of her many photos of Adiren plastered across her bedroom walls. A sleepy smile tugged at the corner of her cheeks. She sat up in her bed and looked away before she went off into daydreaming about Adrien again. Marinette reached for her phone to set her alarm off, but when she looked down at her screen she yelped and jumped 3 feet, startling Tikki awake.
" What's w-wr-wrong, Marinette?" Tikki stifled out a yawn.
" My alarm has been going off for an hour! Oh no, I'm late for school again!" She moaned, jumping off her bed quickly and running straight into one of her walls. " I'm okay!"
Tikki rolled her eyes. Marinette being clumsy as always. Sometimes she couldn't believe this was the owner of her miraculous, the heroine of Paris, but she knew that Marinette had been the right choice. Then she realized that the girl was still rambling on while she got ready.
"...and the worst of all, I missed an entire hour of seeing Adrien!" Marinette frantically pulled her school bag over her shoulder as she scrambled around with the homework papers on her desk, putting them into her folders.
Tikki laughed and flew over to her, landing on her right shoulder. " You need to get your priorities right Marinette!"
Marinette smiled and opened her mouth to say something but jumped at the sound of her phone buzzing.
" Oh no, no, no! I'm late, I'm late!" Marinette sprinted out her bedroom, Tikki flying close by.
She didn't even stop to say goodbye to her parents before running out the door. Sabine stared in surprise. She's still here? Her school started an hour ago! Then she shrugged and went back to the pastry.
Marinette ran all the way to the entrance for her school, then doubled over, panting as she caught her breath for a few seconds. Then she sprinted up the stairs, still mumbling "I'm late, I'm late.." She fumbled into her classroom, out of breath, and crashed straight into her teacher's desk, sending papers flying everywhere." I'm here!"
The whole room went silent.
looked up, distracted from her lesson, clearly annoyed with Marinette's arrival. Everyone looked up from their books and stared. Marinette could feel her face growing red as she desperately avoided everyone's gaze as she made her way to her desk, where Alya was waiting for her.
" I think this is my worst one yet," Marinette grumbled as she slid into her seat and took out her history book.
" Yeah, way to go girl!" Alya whispered back, grinning. "Let me guess, on your way to school you got bit by a radioactive bumblebee or something?"
" Hey!" A faint blush played across Marinette's cheeks. " It's just that-"
" If that were true, it wouldn't be shocking," Alya interrupted. " Girl, it's not the worst excuse you've given me yet.."
Marinette looked up at her best friend, annoyed. " I can't believe I missed an entire class period…"
Alya just shook her head. " What else is new.."
" Ok class!" clapped her hands, getting everyone's attention. " Today, we will be having a new student join us, please welcome Abby to our classroom!"
A girl about Marinette's height shyly walked inside the classroom. She had big green eyes, licorice black hair and lots and lots of freckles. She hid behind her books and didn't walk in any further.
" Why don't you introduce yourself, Abby?" The teacher said kindly.
Abby walked forward, stopping in front of Adrien's desk. She stared at Adrien for a second, and her eyes flickered, holding his gaze. Marinette clenched her fists, because she knew that expression. It was the same expression Lila had on her face the day she had walked into their classroom and set eyes on Adrien.
The girl looked away and cleared her throat, staring down at her feet. " My name is Abby. Abby Fernsby."
Everyone was silent, all eyes focused on her. That's when she looked up at everyone and smiled. Something about her made Marinette feel uneasy. Her smile seemed cold, almost distant, but she still had somewhat good intentions.
" I'm really sorry about this."
Marinette turned around to look at everyone in her classroom, and sure enough, everyone was just as confused as she was.
Abby's smile twisted into a look of sympathy before she took out a small black device, clicking a tiny
red button.
Then everything went dark.
