"Stay with the ship, R2." Anakin said as he hopped out of his jedi star fighter. He heard several beeps come from the astromech droid and he smiled.
"Okay, now what?" Anakin asked as he stood on the marshes of the planet. While it wasn't as hot as Tatooine, the humidity of the planet was intense. Anakin could feel the moisture clinging to his clothes, making the air feel as if it were being weighed down. He watched as several fluorescent bugs flew around him, chasing each other through the air. They flew away and were lost in the dense mist of the planet.
"Patience, young one." Qui-Gon said. Anakin's eyes widened as out from the shadows emerged the ghost of his master.
"Master," Anakin said.
"Anakin," Qui-Gon said with a small smile on his face. "I have asked you to come here, in order to complete the first step of your training." He turned to face an entrance to a cave. "Over there, will be the answers to the questions you have. But you will not like what you will see."
"I'm ready." Anakin affirmed. Qui-Gon nodded. The bugs that Anakin had seen earlier were back and swarming towards the entrance of the cave. Anakin made his way over, careful not to step in any large puddles. As he approached the cave, the bugs swarmed around the entrance, blocking his path.
"Leave your lightsaber. You will not need it." Qui-Gon said. Anakin looked down at the saber on his hip, and reluctantly removed it, placing it on a rock outside of the entrance to the cave. The bugs parted, revealing a path that led inside of the cave.
"Go, and may the force be with you." Qui-Gon said. Anakin turned back to look at his ghost and watched as it vanished into the mist before his eyes. He turned back around to face the cave. He could hear the dark calling to him, louder than it usually did. He took a deep breath and went inside.
He heard the voices of other jedi, his men, and Padme as he walked through the cave. But he saw nothing. Only darkness.
"Hello?" Anakin called out. He was met by a harsh screech, and then the first vision unfolded in front of his eyes.
A hooded Sith lord, ignited his lightsaber, and struck down several masters. Anakin felt the fear begin to rise in his chest. His breaths became more rapid, and he frantically looked around. The scene changed, and he was now in the jedi council chambers. They were dark, and the room was empty. Slowly, younglings emerged from behind the seats of the council members. He could see the fear in their eyes, and sense it in the force. Before he could ask why, a blue blade ignited in the dark room, and began to cut down the younglings, slaughtering them like animals. Their screams filled Anakin's head, and he clutched at his head, begging for the visions to stop. The way that blue blade swung through the younglings… it reminded him of what he had done to the sand people. It reminded him of his mother. The was silence, and Anakin looked up. Then he heard the scream of the tusken's and watched, as that same blue blade cut them down again. And again. Anakin screamed, in rage, and in pain. He couldn't take any more of this. Watching the endless slaughter. The monster that he had become.
"Make it stop! Please!" He screamed into the void. And it did. The cave grew silent. The visions stopped. All Anakin could hear was his own heart beating, and his own breathing.
And then he heard someone, no, something else breathing as well. The temperature in the cave plummeted, and Anakin could see his breath. The breathing continued at a steady pace, sounding like as it was coming through some sort of respirator. Anakin tried to take deep breaths in, and calm himself, using the techniques that Obi-Wan had taught him long ago. But they did not help him here. Anakin watched as from the shadows; a figure emerged. It was tall, and its face was obscured by a mask. In the reflection of the eyes, Anakin saw his own horrified expression, reflected back at him. The heavy breathing filled the cave, louder than any of the screams he had heard earlier. He could sense the anger, the hate, the suffering, oozing off the presence of this thing. It approached him slowly, not saying a single word.
Anakin reached out into the force, and summoned his blade to his hand. He ignited it, and swung at the mask, decapitating the enemy. Anakin watched as the head fell off the shoulders and rolled onto the ground, so that it was looking up at him. He looked down at the saber he was holding, and saw that the blade was red. Horrified, Anakin deactivated the saber, and looked at the hilt. It felt comfortable in his hand, and the build looked just like his current one. He inspected it further, his fear compounding when he realized that he was holding the weapon of a sith lord, and it felt… right. He threw the blade onto the ground, in disgusted at both it and himself. The hilt hit the mask that was laying on the floor. It exploded, and as the smoke cleared, Anakin screamed.
The face that was looking back at him from the mask was none other than his own. Anakin dropped down to his knees, gripping the cold soil in his hands.
"No no no no" he muttered repeatedly. "It can't be." He whispered between gasps of air. "It can't." He got up on shaky legs, knowing that he had to leave this place immediately. Anakin turned and ran, towards the light of the cave. He stumbled over rocks, his footing growing worse and worse as he continued to run. As soon as he made it out of the cave, he collapsed onto the ground. He felt the moisture from the soil rising through his clothes. But he didn't care. He tried to blink the dark spots out of his vision, afraid of what they would lead to. They lead to nothing.
