Here is a new song fiction. I heard this song shortly after watching the episode when Pruitt passed away and it came to me today about writing about Andy and Jack with this song if they were to be more than friends. The song is called 'After the Storm Blows Through' by Maddie and Tae.
Also some updates… I'm working on Better Together, I promise, however I'm drawing a blank on exactly where to go next with the story. So if anyone has ideas, let me know.
ALSO my friend D.H. Caldwell and I have collaborated on a new story called "You're my Home." It is a prequel to her story, "The Home Team". If you haven't checked out either of these stories, I suggest you do. Her writing is amazing and it has been so fun to write with her.
You've been walking around with a dark cloud
Hanging over every step you take
Like the slightest breeze will knock you to your knees
Doing your best not to break
Wish I had the words to tell ya, but I got an umbrella
And I think it's big enough for the both of us
I'll face that wind by your side
Even take on that rain, I don't mind,
Or give you space or give you time,
If you need me to,
But I'll be here for you
After the storm blows throughJack leaned against the door frame of the turnout room. He was watching Andy as she was putting some gear away. He was worried about her. It had been two weeks since Pruitt had passed and a week since she had been back to work. When they were at home she had locked herself in her room and hadn't come out except for shifts and to eat. Even when they were eating dinner she wouldn't say anything, except making sure that he was okay dealing with his PTSD from everything that had happened. He would try to get her to talk, but she would just either shake her head or leave the table. He was trying to give her space but it was getting harder and harder, especially when it seemed like the slightest breeze could knock her to her knees.
"Gibson, come here for a minute." Maya said.
Jack rolled his eyes and followed her into the beanery and saw everyone in there, minus Andy. "Okay, I'm having major deja vu here."
"Don't worry it's not about you this time. You live with Andy, is she like this at home too?" Maya asked worried for her friend. "The only thing she has told me is that she doesn't blame me or Sullivan for what happened."
"Same here." Robert Sullivan said. "The therapist we had her go to said that she talked in therapy and seemed fine, even signed off."
"She did tell me that." Jack said, taking a seat between Dean and Travis.
"Miranda said that that was the best psych at Grey Sloan too." Ben said.
"I think Andy pulled a fast one on them." Dean said. "Think about it she lost her best friend and her dad in a matter of months, I'd be the same way if I was in her shoes, and I'm not even close with my dad."
"I'm really worried about her, maybe we need to sit her down and coax it out of her." Vic said
"I can handle it." Jack said, getting up and leaving the beanery.
"Where are you going?" Travis asked as everyone else was arguing over how to help Andy.
"Getting Andy out of here before she hears this. Trust me by next shift she'll be okay. I'm getting her to talk to me." Jack said as he headed out to find Andy.
Andy was right where he last saw her, still standing in front of her turnout gear.
"Are you ready to get out of here? I'm thinking pizza for dinner." Jack said coming up behind her.
"Yeah, let's go." Andy said as she walked out to where Jack had parked his truck.
Jack grabbed his bag and started to head out.
"Jack wait!"
Jack turned around and saw Travis running over to him.
"If you need me to talk to Andy let me know, I'll be over. I know what it's like to lose someone you love in the line of duty. Our story may be different, but I'm sure it still hurts the same in some ways." Travis said.
"I'll let you know or have Andy get ahold of you. Thanks man." Jack said.
Once they got back to the apartment that they shared and ate the pizza they picked up, Jack had convinced her to stay out in the living room at least for a little bit. It was too quiet between them, before all of this they were always joking around, or yelling or making fun of what was on TV, and now nothing.
"I'm worried about you." Jack finally said. He wasn't expecting an answer out of her. She hadn't answered him any other time he had said that to her. "You've been walking around with a dark cloud over every step you take and trust me I get that after everything you have been through. I wish I had the words to tell you, but I honestly don't, I'm still trying to figure it out for myself, your dad saved us all that day. Just let me help you. I'll face this with you, even take it on for you, I don't mind. I'll give you space or give you time if you need me to, but I'll be here for you, no matter what." Jack started to stand up when he felt Andy grab his hand. He turned around and looked at her. She had tears in her eyes.
"I thought I could do this but going back to the station this week, I don't know, I can't. I miss him some much."
Jack sat back down and pulled Andy in as she cried into his chest. "Why didn't you say anything?"
"Cause everyone is trying to work through this, not just me." She said.
Jack squeezed her a little tighter, "No, he was your dad. You're more important right now than us trying to work through this. We'll get through this together okay. I'm right here, no more bottling it up."
Andy let some more tears fall, for the first time in two weeks she really started to feel the weight come off of her shoulders. "Thank you Jack."
"Always."
"I just don't understand, I thought I did when I was talking to the therapist. He sacrificed himself to save me, to save us. I know he was probably thinking he didn't have much longer cause of his cancer but, I'm just still so sad and don't understand it completely."
"Like Maya said he told her. He hand picked this team and we became a family." Jack said and looked at her. "I think he knew, even though he was leaving you, leaving us, we were all going to be there for each other. Now I'm going to be here for you like you were here for me earlier this week."
Andy smiled up at him, she needed to hear that. "Thank you."
"Quit thanking me, what are friends for?" Jack said.
"Best friend mister get it right." Andy said with a small smile.
"It's nice to see that smile again." Jack said. "What do you say, want to talk some more or we can watch some TV, see if there is anything good on Netflix."
"Baby steps with the talking." Andy said as Jack nodded, this was at least a start. "Let's see what's on TV, if not I'm picking the movie, the movies you pick stink."
Jack smiled. "Fine, whatever you say."
As the weeks went on Andy started to feel and be more like herself. Her and Maya had worked through their issues. She talked with Travis after Jack had suggested it and this was helping her too, knowing that someone else had very similar feelings about losing someone they loved like they both did. Vic, Dean, Ben and Robert were always there for her too if she needed it. Jack though, Jack had become her go to, for just about everything. About 4 months after everything Andy realized that she still had feelings for him, one night she drunkenly told him and to her surprise Jack also still had feelings. The next morning, both admitted it was true, it just took them getting drunk to admit it. They worked though everything together, they were each other's best friends, life couldn't have gotten much better for them. Almost a year after Pruitt passed Jack had proposed again, this time though Andy said yes.
You know, you and me, we've been thick as thieves
You get cut I feel the pain
We're stuck together, no matter what the weather
And that ain't gonna change
I don't know how long the hurt'll hold on
Or when the sun will shine again
So until then…
I'll face that wind by your side
Even take on that rain, I don't mind,
Or give you space or give you time,
If you need me to,
But I'll be here for you
After the storm blows through
7 months after Jack had proposed to Andy and they were happier and stronger than ever, as everyone at the station said, they were thick as thieves. They were busy planning their wedding, that was 8 months away, well it was more like Andy and Maya planning it, Jack just did what they asked him to do, he was just happy to finally be marrying the woman he loved.
That November night though everything was about to change for them again.
"Ladder, Engine, Aid Car, PRT 19- 5 alarm, 581 Larch St."
"So much for an easy night." Andy mumbled getting out of her bunk, as the alarm went off around 1 AM.
Everyone ran out to the rig they were assigned to and drove out to the fire.
"This is, I don't even know what to say." Vic said getting out of the engine.
"I think they need to make a new category after this fire." Jack said looking at it.
"Literally every station in Seattle is here." Dean said looking around.
"The PRT can't handle this amount of people, I don't even know if I have enough equipment or supplies." Ben said.
"They're still sending people in?" Travis asked, seeing others running out of the building.
"They better not be." Andy said.
Everyone was in shock. This was the worst fire any of them had ever seen.
Maya didn't know where to start or send anyone. "Um, let's just wait until Sullivan gets over here and tells us what's going on."
They didn't have to wait long for him to come over. "I'm telling you all, be careful. We're abandoning search and rescue, it's too dangerous and unstable. We need mostly triage, assist with PRT and maybe 3 of you on hoses." Sullivan then ran over to one of the other stations that came right behind them.
Maya took a deep breath. "Okay Gibson, Hughes, and Montgomery hoses. Miller assist Warren if you can, if not tag people and send them to me and Herrera." Maya yelled over the noise. "Let's get this done safely and get back in one piece."
About 40 minutes later, the fire was still just as bad, if not worse. There were so many people from the apartment complex that were injured it wasn't even funny. Grey Sloan had even sent doctors down to assist more on the scene, as well as try and complete more with the PRT. That was when everyone stopped though, a gas line that was defective blew, causing many of the firefighters that were on hoses, attempting to put out the fire, flying back. Andy couldn't breath, it was like she was feeling the pain Jack had just experienced, she needed to get over to where Jack, Vic, and Travis where, she couldn't see them anymore like she could a few minutes ago.
Andy looked over and saw Maya, Dean, and Ben trying to look for them too. She couldn't just stand around and wait though, she saw a few others running towards where firefighters were down, she just started running.
"Herrera get back here!" Maya screamed. "Miller, don't even think about it." Maya said to Dean, she could tell by the look on his face.
"Two of my best friends and my roommate were possibly hurt in that blast! I'm going!" Dean said as he ran after Andy to help look.
"Andy wait!" Dean yelled.
"I'm not going back!"
"I know, either am I." Dean said as they saw someone coming towards them, it was Travis.
"Travis! Are you okay? Where's Jack and Vic?" Andy asked.
"I don't know, we were all right beside each other then after the blast I blacked out. I didn't see them near me." He said holding his side.
Dean radioed out. "Warren or Bishop head over this way we found Montgomery, he's alert, walking and talking. Holding his right side."
"On it." Ben answered, they saw him running over with Maya.
"Go find them, hopefully they are near here." Travis said as he started walking towards Maya and Ben.
"Herrera, Miller, stick together!" Maya yelled as she saw them.
They nodded their heads as they kept going. They heard Robert over the radio asking if anyone knew who was unaccounted right now.
"Sullivan in 19 we found Montgomery. We're missing Gibson and Hughes." Dean answered but then looked up. "Nevermind I see Hughes."
Both Andy and Dean ran over to her.
"Vic wake up, can you hear us?" Dean asked.
"God you are just as annoying now as you are at the house." Vic answered, not moving. "God my leg hurt."
Andy looked down and saw her right leg was definitely broken. That's when she looked up and saw Jack laying flat on his front. "Dean, I found Jack." she said and ran over.
"I need two gurneys over near the entrance of the building right now!" Dean yelled into the radio. "Hughes has a broken leg, Gibson is unconscious."
Andy was trying to keep it together right now. This wasn't happening. "Jack, wake up!"
Andy carefully helped roll him over once the paramedic reached them.
"Pulse is weak, we need to transport right now." the paramedic said as they headed towards the rig.
"I'm pulling 14, 19, 24, and 32 from service." Andy heard Robert say over the radio.
"19 B shift take the rigs back to the station. Warren is with Montgomery, I'm transporting Hughes and Miller is with me. Herrera, are you with Gibson?" Maya said.
"I am." Andy said jumping in the rig watching as they hooked Jack up to IV's and hooking him up to monitors. She couldn't do this, she couldn't lose him.
"Ma'am are you okay?" One of the paramedics asked as they were in route. Jack's heart beat had stabilized since first hooking him up and giving him oxygen.
"No, I'm not, that's my fiance and I can't lose him." Andy answered trying to take a deep breath.
"We're about a minute out from Grey Sloan."
After this everything was a blur to Andy. They had rushed Jack away from her. She remembered a few doctors coming out and talking to them all, she thought she saw Ben's wife Miranda and Meridith Grey, but that was all a blur too. She remembered that Travis was okay miraculously, just some broken ribs. Vic had to have surgery to correct her leg. Jack though, he was a mess. He had multiple broken ribs and his right arm. They were also worried about internal bleeding.
"I think I'm going to be sick." Andy finally said about an hour after the last they had heard about everyone.
"It's probably your nerves. I know I'm feeling that way." Dean said.
"No, I'm really going to be sick." Andy said, running towards a bathroom.
Dean, Ben, and a half asleep Travis who was discharged looked at each other worried as Maya ran after her.
Andy came out of the stall and splashed some water on her face.
"Okay, this is the 5th day I've seen you sick all around this time each morning." Maya said. "Andy, are you pregnant?"
"I can't think of this right now. I need to get back out there in case they come out about Jack." Andy said, trying to go around Maya.
Maya gave her a look. "Andy Herrera, tell me, what's going on?"
Andy started crying. "I think I am. I can't deal with this though, not until I know that Jack is okay."
Maya pulled her into a hug. "It's going to be okay." Once Andy had called down Maya looked at her. "Okay, here is what we are going to do. We are going to go and wait to see how Jack and Vic are. Then once you can go see Jack, I will go find Cariena and get you a pregnancy test. You are going to take it and from there we will figure it out okay."
Andy nodded her head and wet her face down again. "Okay."
Maya reached over and grabbed Andy's hand as they walked back to the waiting room.
"Are you okay?" Ben asked once they got back.
"Yeah I think so." Andy said, taking a seat. She looked around and saw Travis had fallen asleep, probably from the pain medicine he was on. Dean was gone though.
"Any news?" Maya asked.
"Vic's out of surgery and can have one visitor at a time right now. They are watching her closely overnight, something about her neuro exam so they are only allowing one of us back at a time, Ameila Shepherd is going to explain it better to us when she is out of surgery, one of the guys from 32 suffered a brain bleed so she is dealing with that. Other than that she is doing really good. Dean's back with her now. Tavis just crashed, I think his pain killers finally kicked in."
Maya nodded her head. Andy looked over and saw Miranda and Meridith coming over towards them.
"Miranda, how's Jack?" Ben asked. Maya reached over and woke up Travis.
"Gibson is going to be okay, he's going to be down probably the longest out of 19 but he's going to be okay." Miranda said.
"Oh thank God!" Andy said and let her tears fall again, collapsing into a chair. He was alive and going to be okay.
Meredith and Maya sat down beside her as Ben and Travis let out a sigh of relief. Everyone was okay.
"We had to remove his spleen because of how bad the bleeding was but that is nothing uncommon anymore. We also fixed a rupture in his one artery. We casted his arm, that should heal on its own and with his ribs we can tape them and give him pain meds to help. I'm not going to lie to you Andy he is going to be in pain. Give him a few months though and he'll be good as new." Meredith said to her.
"Thank you both so much." Andy said. "Can I go see him?"
"Come on, I'll show you back. He was still asleep but he should be up soon." Miranda said. "Once he's out of recovery you all can go see him."
Maya leaned over and gave Andy a hug and whispered in her ear. "I'll get that test, go see your guy."
Andy followed the two doctors down the hallway. Once she saw Jack though, she was finally able to let out a huge sigh of relief getting to see him.
"Andy, just press his call button when he wakes up and one of us will be in to check on him." Meredith said, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"Thank you both again." Andy said and headed into the room. She pulled up the chair to his bedside and grabbed his hand.
"Hey you." She said and let some more tears fall. "I don't know if you can hear me but you scared the hell out of me tonight, don't you ever do that to me again. We're stuck together, no matter what Gibson, I'm stealing your last name soon, ain't nothing going to change that." She said and chuckled. Everyone at the station, including the B Shift had joked around saying that Jack stole Andy's heart so she was stealing his last name. "Jack, you helped me through the toughest time in my life. They said that you're going to be in pain for some time now and recovery may be rough with everything right now and I don't know how long this hurt is going to hold on or when the sun is going to shine again for us. Like I said though, you helped me through everything with my dad and let's face it, I was a mess. So now it's my turn to face this by your side, I don't mind. If you need space, I'll try to give it to you. But I'll be here for you."
"Are you copying what I said to you when your dad died?" Jack groaned as he looked over at Andy.
"You're awake." Andy cried as she reached over and gave him a kiss.
"I feel like I've been hit by a truck." Jack said. "What happened, the last thing I remember is trying to put out that five alarm."
"There was an explosion. The news said it was a faulty gas line that blew. The blast knocked you out. You had some internal bleeding and broke your arm and quite a few ribs, but you're going to be okay." Andy said, running her fingers through his hair.
"Crap, where are Vic and Travis?" He said, trying to sit up.
She stopped him from sitting up. "They are okay. Vic broke her one leg pretty bad and they are just watching her, I guess one of her neuro exams was off. Travis somehow only broke some ribs. He'll be up to see you soon. I need to page Bailey or Grey, they need to check you over."
"Give it a few minutes. I just want it to be us for a few minutes." Jack said.
Andy smiled and leaned down and kissed him. "Okay, but just for a few minutes. God Jack Gibson, don't you ever scare me like that again."
"I'll try not to." he said and smiled at her.
A few days later Andy walked down the hallway towards Jack's room. He had finally convinced her last night to go home and get a good night's sleep. They were hoping to have him home within the next few days. Andy was nervous and nauseous this morning, Maya had made her take a pregnancy test last night since she refused to leave Jack's side until then and like she had suspected she was in fact pregnant. She had no idea how she was going to tell Jack yet. They had talked about having kids, but they wanted to wait for a while after they were married. They were both still young and wanted to explore and do some things in their lives. She didn't know how he was going to take it.
She walked into the room and saw him sitting in the chair that she had been camping out in. "Hey look at you out of bed."
Jack looked up from the chair he was in. "Yeah, great. You should have seen me just trying to get here."
Andy walked in and knelt down in front of the chair. "They warned us that this wasn't going to be an easy recovery. Jack, it's only been 3 days, give it a little bit of time."
"Andy this is driving me nuts, sitting around not doing anything. This pain is horrible. I'm about ready to just be done. I kicked physical therapy out this morning after I got to the chair. I can't deal with this."
Andy stopped and looked at him. This was not Jack and it was making her mad, especially now with them having a baby on the way. "You kicked out therapy?"
"Yeah, they wanted me to go for a walk and I told them no way. I'm not doing it, it hurts too much."
"You have got to be kidding me! Jack, do you even want to leave this hospital? That's what's going to get you out of here is walking and listening to what everyone says and not just doing what you want. I need you to do this, if not for you, then do it for me okay?" Andy said angrily at him.
"Andy, I just need some time."
"And you can have that but you still need to do this Jack! If you won't do it for yourself or for me then think of your kid that will be here in a few months!" Andy yelled and started to cry some, this was not how she wanted it to come out that she was pregnant.
"What did you say?" he asked shocked.
Andy looked over at him. "I'm pregnant, I had suspected something was up for about a week now and Maya made me take a test last night. It was positive. We're going to have a baby. That's why I need you to do this for me, for us. I can't do this without you."
Jack looked at her and then tried to stand up.
"What are you doing?" Andy asked, trying to help him up.
He wrapped his arm that wasn't casted around her and pulled her into his body, ignoring all the pain that he was in. "I'm sorry, I'm just frustrated with this whole situation I'm in right now."
"I know, I am too." Andy said "Also it's lonely at home, don't think I'm leaving your side until you're allowed to leave."
Jack laughed lightly, "Okay, now can you go and see if physical therapy will come back. I need to do this for us." he said and placed a hand on Andy's stomach. "We can do this."
"Like always." Andy said. "I love you."
"I love you too."
And your skies are blue again
And you're back to you again, my friend
Jack laid with Andy in her hospital bed holding their son. Things had finally started to look up again for the two after she told him she was pregnant. Her pregnancy had gone smooth after her morning sickness was done with, they also backed up their wedding to 3 months after the baby was born. The only struggle that did happen during the pregnancy was Andy fighting everyone about being on desk duty towards the end, driving everyone mad with worry. He couldn't believe that he was a dad. Their son started to fuss as he was thinking back.
"Sh, buddy it's okay, let your mom sleep." Jack said adjusting the little boy in his arms.
"No mom's awake, I've been awake watching my two favorite guys." Andy smiled up at Jack.
"I didn't even realize you were awake."
"How could you, you were watching our little guy like your life depended on it." Andy laughed as she looked at their son. "He's perfect Jack, he has your nose."
Jack smiled over at Andy, "You know we still need to figure out a name."
Andy looked down at their son. "What was that name you said you liked?"
"Colton?"
"That's it, that's his name. Colton Gibson."
"It's perfect, what do you think Colton?" Jack asked as the baby looked up at the two.
"I'll take that as a yes." Andy said laughing as she took Colton from Jack. "Well that was easy, now we need to figure out a middle name for you."
"What do you think, I picked his first name." Jack said.
"I don't know what about Jack. Wait I just heard that together in my head it doesn't sound right." Andy said.
As the two thought Jack smiled. "What about Ryan, in honor of him. He was your best friend for how long. I think it would be nice."
Andy smiled and looked up at him, "You'd be okay with that?"
"I wouldn't have suggested it if I didn't. Andy he was your best friend, I think it would be a nice way to honor him. Colton Ryan Gibson has a nice ring to it."
"I love it. Thank you." Andy said as she gave Jack a kiss.
They pulled back when they heard a knock on the door.
"Can we come in?" Maya said pecking her head in.
"Yeah, get in here guys." Jack said.
Everyone came in and congratulated them.
"Help us all there is a mini Jack Gibson and Andy Herrera on the loose." Dean said as Prue looked down at the baby.
"Baby!" She said as everyone laughed.
"Yeah, that's a baby, you were once that little." Vic said to the little girl as she tickled her belly.
"Okay hand me that baby." Maya said as Andy passed Colton over to her.
"What's his name?" Robert asked.
"Colton Ryan Gibson" Andy said, smiling up at Jack.
"He's perfect you guys." Travis said.
"Just wait you two, now the real work starts." Ben said.
"Yeah, good thing I have a pretty great partner for it." Andy said.
"Who me?" Jack asked jokingly, causing everyone to laugh.
I'll face that wind by your side
Even take on that rain, I don't mind,
Or give you space or give you time,
If you need me to,
But I'll be here for you
After the storm blows through
About 3 months after Colton was born Andy and Jack were busy with getting ready for their wedding that was going to happen that weekend. There was something that Andy wanted to do before everything got crazy this week. Jack pulled the truck up the driveway in the cemetery to where the stone for Pruitt sat. He looked over at Andy and saw her looking back at Colton who was trying to put his toes in his mouth. He couldn't help but smile, after the past two years he never pictured that this is where they would be.
"Are you ready?" Jack asked.
"Yeah, I want Colt to know about his grandfather and I want to start doing this now." Andy said, taking a deep breath.
Jack gave her hand a squeeze, "Why don't you head up there first and I'll get little man situated and head up with him in a few."
Andy nodded her head and got out of the truck and headed up towards the stone. "Hi Dad." She ran her hand along the top of the stone. It had been a while since she was able to stop here, it was a few days before the fire that Jack was injured in and then once he was better, they were busy getting everything ready for Colton's arrival. "Thank you for looking out for Jack and me with everything that's been going on in our lives. This weeks the week, we're finally getting married. God I wish you were here for this, to walk me down the aisle, to meet your grandson, he's amazing dad. And Jack, he's such an amazing dad, he reminds me of you with how good he is with Colton." Andy heard a noise and turned around and smiled, it was Colton cuing and Jack talking back to him.
"Hey Captain." Jack said as he rested his one hand on top of the stone.
Andy took Colton from Jack and he wrapped his free arm around Andy.
"Colton buddy this is your Papa Pruitt." Andy said holding the baby close. "I know you're too little to understand this right now, but he would have loved you so much."
"If it wasn't for your Papa me and your mom wouldn't be here." Jack said.
"I can't believe it's been over two years now." she said resting her head against his shoulder.
They both stood there for a few minutes quietly taking everything in.
"You know, after everything we went through with your dad passing, it made me realize that we can make it through any storm as long as we are together." Jack said.
Andy smiled. "And I'll always be right here for you after any storm blows through." she said and gave him a kiss.
"We better head out and drop him off with Marsha to get to the station in time." Jack said.
"You're right." Andy said. "I love and miss you so much dad."
Andy started to head back towards the truck. Jack watched as she was getting Colton situated in the truck.
"Thank you for everything Pruitt. If it wasn't for you I wouldn' have this amazing life, I'll take care of her don't worry. We all miss you Captain." Jack said and headed back to the truck.
