Chapter 1 – Prologue
(Iguaçu National Park, 1996)
The sun rose into the sky from behind the horizon beyond the river were shared by the waterfalls which reflected the water droplets to create the beautiful rainbow shines through the water, it's called the Iguaçu Falls. It filled with several rocky and wooded islands and islets on the edge of the escarpment and above the falls. Atop the waterfalls, a harpy eagle in young male adult years flew down into below and dived through the spray of the water droplets.
The harpy eagle has slate-black feathers, and the underside is mostly white, except for the feathered tarsi, which are striped black. A broad black band across the upper breast separates the gray head from the white belly. The head is pale grey and is crowned with a double crest which consisted of seven plumages. The upper side of the tail is black with three gray bands, while the underside of it is black with three white bands. His eye iris is gray while sclera was yellow, the cere and bill are blackish and the tarsi and talons are yellow.
The harpy eagle landed on the tourist Garganta do Diabo Walkway's railing as he viewed the waterfalls and brings the smile on his face.
"It feels like a paradise to me." A male harpy eagle said.
Then he heard a whistle as he turned around to see the Brazilian man wearing the bright azure sweater which hides his white shirt, beige pants, and brown shoes along with 7-years old boy who wore his brown long-sleeved shirt with iconic of the harpy eagle, short jeans and shoes.
"Come over here, Bruno. I want you to meet my son, Afonso." An ornithologist spoked.
Bruno flies to an ornithologist named Carlos and landed on his right arm before he glanced at the child.
"Afonso, this is the most powerful and largest raptor in the world, the harpy eagle. His name is Bruno and I like you to pet him." Ornithologist replied.
"Isn't it dangerous, papa?" Young Afonso asked nervously.
"Don't be scared, he won't claw at you." His father encouraged as he gestured Bruno who lowered down his head
Young Afonso reached out his hand over Bruno's head and petted him which makes the harpy eagle cooed as the little boy stroked the bird predator's neck as Bruno jumped on the little boy's left arm. Afonso giggled as Bruno rubbed against his face on the boy's left cheek.
"I told you this bird was tamed." Afonso's father replied.
"You are a nice eagle, Bruno." Young Afonso said.
Bruno was a bit surprised as he talked to him. "You... talked to me?"
"Yeah, I did. You understand me, right?" Young Afonso asked.
Carlos chuckled as he takes Bruno and put him in his right arm. "My son is speaking to birds and other animals. How amazing is he?"
"Oh, I really kinda losing my mind but I am getting used to this." Bruno whispered.
"Papa, can I see the blue macaws' nesting ground?" Young Afonso asked.
"Sure. Bruno, take him to the Spix's macaws' territory." Carlos replied.
Bruno nodded as he gestured his head to the left direction and flew off to the long accessible stairs that connected near the waterfall and Afonso followed the harpy eagle.
Carlos sighed happily. "My son is growing up. He's so special to many kinds of creatures."
Then he went back to the facility area into his office.
(Iguaçu Preservation Facility – Office)
Carlos sat in the desk before he heard the black intercom phone ringing and picked it up. "Hello?"
Then his expression changed into concern and worry.
(Iguaçu National Park – Spix's Macaws' Territory)
Bruno is still following Bruno into the deepest part of the rainforest and finds himself standing in the center of the birds breeding ground as he saw a couple of Spix's macaws flew passed the other blue macaws, some of them landed on the trees' branches and eating the açaí berries from the açaí trees. Then some of the bluebirds have spotted the little boy on the ground as the blue macaw couple landed on the ground followed by the tribe members. One of them is the male and female, suggesting that they are both leaders of Spix's macaws.
A male Spix's macaw has dark blue feathers and teal eyes. He has white markings around his eyes and a beak with a ring of darker feathers around them. He is a taller, slender, and firmed build. He sports a feather ruffle on the back and sides of his neck with some extra feathers in the front and he also has three long upper feathers on the back of his head. His beak and talons are black and he has a long tail.
The female Spix's macaw has pacific blue feathers, brown eyes, and a blooming body. She had several clusters of feathers on the back of her head which resembled the short bob hair. Her beak and talons were light greys and her toes were grey.
"Bruno, did you bring the human boy in our nest?" A female blue macaw asked as she glanced at Bruno
"There's nothing to worry, Sabedoria. He is not a threat." Bruno answered.
"So I noticed." Sabedoria spoked as her mate put his wings over her.
"It's going to be fine, honey. That boy cares about our species and other animals." A male Spix's macaw reassured.
"I agreed with José." Bruno said as he turned to Young Afonso. "Afonso. Introduce yourself to the Spix's macaws."
Afonso took a deep breath as he walked towards the blue macaw couple.
"Hi, it's really nice to meet you two. I'm Afonso." Young Afonso replied.
Everyone was gaped with their beaks in shock, realizing that the human boy was speaking to them in regular human language as they murmured each other.
"I don't believe it; he was able to communicate with us." José replied.
"I believe he will be used to let us know each other." Sabedoria said.
Bruno walked towards them. "That's right. We trusted this boy."
Young Afonso stepped to the birds and kneeled to them. "I know you all despite the humans but I will tell you everything about them."
"Alright, we'll hear you what you had told us." José spoked.
Young Afonso was ready to explain about the humans and environments.
"You see, I studied about your species and this habitat was part of the ecological system of the environment so my papa who is the ornithologist and taking care of your kind." Young Afonso replied.
"Ornithologist?" José asked.
"I believe the ornithologist is studying the birds including us." Bruno put up.
"Oh, interesting. And why is that?" José said.
"My dad and his colleagues were trying to protect your flock from smuggling, deforestation, and poaching. The difference between good and bad. The bad guys only cared about the amounts of money." Young Afonso said.
"What money?" Sabedoria asked.
"The money is like something valuable to buy something in stores like foods, drinks, books, and other things. The bad humans wanted to be rich like capturing the animals and birds, cutting down the trees, and even hunting them. So, there I was, taking care of you all." Young Afonso said.
"Afonso. How long did you study all these?" Bruno asked.
"I just read in the books and the internet. The internet was the information I researched all overstuffs. Did you think I was clever to know about the natural laws of the environment?" Young Afonso smiled.
"No wonder you're so smart, kid." Bruno replied as he flies to him and perched on his head.
"I am still worked at primary school." Young Afonso stated.
"I see. What do you want?" Sabedoria asked.
"Um, I want to see your eggs. Hopefully, they will be hatched soon." Young Afonso said.
"Uh, why don't you say so? Our little chicks will be coming out any soon." José stated before he signaled the two blue macaws to get the eggs.
Then both of the macaws flew over to the tallest tree and entered José and Sabedoria's nest before they come out of the hollow with two eggs on their wings as Bruno flew to them and grabbed the two eggs in his claws before descended down and putting them in front of the parents.
Young Afonso lowered down his knees to the ground. "Wow."
Then one of the eggs started to shake and begins to crack slightly.
"Honey, do you see this? It's hatched already so quick than a month." José asked.
"I wonder it is a boy or a girl." Sabedoria beamed.
Then the egg cracked open as the small blue macaw chick raised its head and sees everything with its eyes. It turned out to be a girl. It has turquoise feathers with lighter tips of her wings, light cerulean blue eyes, and little slim build.
Young Afonso awed. "Ohhhh. Isn't that cute?"
Sabedoria holds her little chick daughter while José takes her out from the eggshells as well from the head.
"She's so beautiful, just like me." Sabedoria giggled.
"What should we name her?" José asked.
"I think I had a better idea; we called her Jasmine." Sabedoria stated.
"Jasmine?" José confused.
"Because she is like the flower blooming so beautiful." Sabedoria said.
Bruno sniffed before he wiped off the tear from his face with his left-wing as José turned to harpy eagle
"Now, now, Bruno. I know it is really not to cry of happiness." José encouraged.
"Sorry, I am just so happy." Bruno whimpered.
Young Afonso noticed the last egg is still not moving. "Why this one is not moving?"
"Oh that, it takes a lot of time to hatch. I wished I had a son; I will be named him 'Blu'." José stated.
"Blu?" Afonso, Bruno, and Sabedoria asked.
"What? It is named after our colors in the feathers. Birds in all feather colors have to stick together." José said.
"That's sound sweet, José." Sabedoria cooed as she leaned to him and perked him in the right cheek.
Then another young chick flew to Young Afonso before circling around him and he placed his hands together to let the little blue macaw chick landed on them.
It has medium blue feathers except he has a lighter tone of his color on his face and body, four little upper feathers on the back of his head, and dark blue tips on his pair of wings. Its beak and talons were dark greys.
"Hi there." Young Afonso said as Bruno flewed to the boy and landed on his shoulder.
"This is Valerio, I kept him since his parents were taken away by smugglers and at the same time, I met your father." Bruno replied.
"How are you doing here, human boy?" Young Valerio asked.
"It's Afonso, Vale." Afonso replied.
"Vale? You are using my name as a nickname. It's so lame." Young Valerio joked as the birds were chuckling and even Afonso.
"This is what I like to hang out with you." Young Afonso replied.
"Sure, you can show me your human stuff." Young Valerio excited.
"Oh, maybe later." Young Afonso said.
Then his father showed up and saw the boy with the birds as the Spix's macaws flew down to the ground.
"Hi, dad. I just want to meet with Valerio." Young Afonso gestured the little blue chick to Carlos.
"Oh, that's nice. Did he tell you his name?" Carlos asked.
"Nope, Bruno mentioned it." Young Afonso said.
"Oh right." Carlos dumbfounded before he chuckled.
Then one of the macaws whispered to others. "This human looks so funny." With that, the others were nodding in agreement as Bruno shushed them to be quiet.
"Dad, this is José, Sabedoria and this is the little Jasmine. She is already hatched." Young Afonso introduced.
"Brilliant, I wished I could see the eggs are about to hatch except that one." Carlos pointed at the unmoving egg.
"Can you at least be taking the photo with us? How about the group shot?" Young Afonso asked.
"Sure, I haven't tried taking some photos with the birds. Lucky for me, I have the camera." Carlos said, took out Toshiba's camera.
Young Afonso holds up the single egg in his hands while the birds gathered around the kid including Bruno, José, and Sabedoria.
"Say flock!" Carlos smiled as he pressed the button to make the light flashed at the group.
(Iguaçu Preservation Facility – Office)
Carlos printed the photo from the camera and gave it to his son. "Here you go, you kept it."
"Thanks, dad." Young Afonso replied.
"Look, I loved to spend time with you but I got to go." Carlos said as he is leaving.
"Where are you going?" Young Afonso asked.
"I got the call from my client Vivo, he said he found the little Spix's macaw that stranded from the Amazon rainforest and now she is in Rio." Carlos asked.
"Really? I can come with you?" Young Afonso asked.
"I'm afraid not, maybe next time I bring you over there. Because Rio de Janerio is pretty far away from us, it's about over nine hundred miles to get there. Stay safe with the birds, don't let the strangers get them." Carlos replied as he left the office.
Young Afonso looked down at the photo, thinking about what he is going to do before he heard the tapping sound coming from the window and he saw Bruno.
Young Afonso rushed over to the window and slides opened it to let Bruno comes in who was breathed in exhausted.
"What happened? Are you okay?" Young Afonso asked.
"I saw...the bunch of smugglers." Bruno gasped.
"What?! But they don't know where the blue macaws are. They are safe from them." Young Afonso assured.
"No, they actually know where the rest of the Spix's macaws are. Now, they are here to capture all the birds." Bruno said as Young Afonso gasped in horrified.
(Iguaçu National Park)
Young Afonso was running through the forest as Bruno followed him in the air and they caught the sight of the smugglers who were trying to catch all the birds and other animals including macaws, honeycreepers, finches, toucans, parakeets, storks, herons, black-fronted piping guans, capuchin monkeys, jaguars, coatis, and tapirs.
Young Afonso gasped as he ran to the other direction and found the Spix's macaws.
"Everyone, you have to leave right now. The smugglers are coming!" Bruno replied.
Every blue macaw was gasping in shock and murmuring. Sabedoria covered the wings around her little daughter who was a little terrified.
"That's why all of you have to fly away from them, otherwise they will find you all." Young Afonso replied.
"Then we must go." José determined before he told his tribe members. "Everyone, let's evacuated. We'll go to another habitat."
"You all have to hide in every river island so the smugglers won't be reached." Bruno said.
The other Spix's macaws obeyed as they flew away from the habitat except for José and Sabedoria.
"What about you, Afonso?" José asked.
"I am going to lie to the smuggler that Spix's macaws don't exist." Young Afonso said.
"When did we see again?" José asked.
"I don't how long but trust me. I will find you and your family in my life." Young Afonso determined.
"Thank you. I trusted you too." José nodded.
Sabedoria gives an unhatched egg to Bruno. "Take our egg as fast as possible, hides somewhere far away."
"I will." Bruno said as he holds it in his left talon.
"You have to hurry back after you hide it." Young Afonso said.
"I will return to see you again, boy. I promised and look after Valerio." Bruno said.
Young Valerio flew right to Afonso and perched on the right shoulder as he cuddled him in the cheek.
"I will be old enough to take care of him." Young Afonso determined.
"Good. I will miss you." Bruno smiled as he flew off from the nesting ground and disappeared within the horizon.
"Good luck, Afonso." Sabedoria farewell as she flew off to follow her flock.
"It is nice meeting with you." José added before he followed her wife and the tribe.
Young Valerio and Young Afonso watched them fly away before they turned to each other.
"I will protect you no matter what happens." Young Afonso said as he takes the photo from his pocket and looked at it.
"We will work together as always." Young Valerio said.
Then he and Young Afonso ran out of the former habitat as they saw the smugglers carried the cages that contained all the birds and animals. However, the cops have arrived to find out what is going on in the resettlement facility and arrested some of the thieves while the other smugglers have escaped from the police.
(Iguaçu Preservation Facility – Office)
Young Afonso and Young Valerio are in the office summoned by police.
"We have captured some of the smugglers but some of them got away." A cop spoked on the radio before he turned it off and turned to them.
"Kid, you did the right job to protect the birds. Don't worry, all the birds and animals were safe here especially the little rare bird with you."
"Excuse me, can I talk to this kid alone?" A voice is heard.
They glanced at the detective who isn't a Brazilian, he is from America and looks about '30s. He wears a light purple long-sleeved shirt underneath his grey jacket, grey pants with suspenders, and black blucher shoes. His skin is fair, eyes were pale brown and hair is brown curtained with two long fringes in the middle.
"Yes, sir." A Brazilian cop left the office.
"Who are you?" Young Afonso asked.
"I am Detective Goodwill from California, working in the Federal Government of the Environment. I see you found this little bird." Detective Goodwill said, making Young Valerio whimpered as Young Afonso comforted him.
"This Valerio, he's the Spix's macaw. I am tried to look after him from the smugglers because he is a rare parrot." Young Afonso explained.
"Rest assured, I won't tell anyone especially the criminals. Now, here's my calling card." Detective Goodwill said, taking out the calling card to the little boy.
"Call me someday if you find something bad happenings." Detective Goodwill said as he leaves the office.
"Are you sure to trust him?" Young Valerio asked.
"Yes." Young Afonso replied before he whispered himself. "I hoped Bruno was okay."
(Sky)
Bruno flew away from Parana, still clutching the egg and looked back to his home which is far away before he turned back in the front. As the days passed by, the sky turned dark as the stars were shining.

The camera switched when the clouds covered the viewers before it showed the beautiful lights of the city as it flew through the city into the urban shantytown along with the fruit markets, and other merchandise like spices, costumes, clothes, music instruments and etc.
As you dance through the streets at the fabled carnival
With the cardamom-cluttered merchandises
You can smell every spice

Oh, the music that plays as you move through a maze
In the haze of your pure delight
You are caught in a drift, you are lost in the rift
