Todoroki Family Dinner

Chapter 2: Awkward Fun…

The smooth and soundly laid plan for the dinner was off to a very bumpy start for all involved, if not for the rat incident then the odd and awkward tension that surrounded the inner workings of the house. A silence fell, one that seemed to extend with each break between the shooting fire extinguisher putting out the small traces of fire, Enji being the one to take responsibility for losing his temper was the one who took up flame control for his home. Accompanied by Shoto, whom at first was reluctant due to his odd relationship with his father but was urged on by both his girlfriend and sister, a form of "bonding" as they called it.

Although their intentions were honest and true, the lack of conversation was just as prominent as any interaction between them prior. Not going unnoticed by the ladies, currently setting the table, more or less to talk without drawing attention away, Fuyumi had met Momo a few months ago when Shoto had decided to go out on a dinner date and invited her, the two had formed a strong repour with how kind and polite they were to each other and a connection of humorous stories about the one that connected them, and some about their classes antics. They had become as close as sisters in such little time; a fact that both relieved and excited Shoto, glad to see her get along so well with his family.

"Did he make a good first impression," Fuyumi whispered to the raven-haired teen.

"Well it was certainly memorable," Momo smiled, holding back a giggle as she placed a plate on the table.

"It's a start I guess, almost burning down your own house is probably as memorable as you can get."

"I don't know I think if he would've succeeded this probably would've been the most memorable date of my life."

"Oh, I can just imagine the reactions of all my work friends once I told them about that."

"I think Natsuo would've had a heart attack."

Fuyumi chuckled before doing her best impression of her brother, "Hey sis, how did last night go?" "Well Natsuo, Shoto and Momo arrived at six, dad and I started preparing dinner, then dad got into a fight with a rat and burned down the house." "Oh, so an average day then."

"Is it really that common," Momo jokingly asked.

"I think the fire fighters are always on standby," The two laughed as they sat down across from each other, then turned their attention over to the other side of the room, the guys getting closer and closer to finishing up, Fuyumi narrowed her eyes as she frowned, "He's, really trying ya know, he may not look it but he's kinda nervous about the whole thing."

"I believe you, it must not be easy on him not having a better relationship with Shoto," Momo solemnly looked at her boyfriend, seeing in his expression that it was equally difficult for him as well, "But, I admire that he's trying, despite the minor chaos from earlier I honestly think he's doing fine Fuyumi," she smiled at Fuyumi, her words and expression putting her at ease.

"Good, he'll be happy to hear that," the elder sister replied as they droned on about other topics while they waited, going unheard by the other two, speaking of-

"I uh…*clears throat* I'm sorry about this Shoto," Endeavor genuinely apologized.

"Seems you have a lot to apologize for lately," Shoto shot back bitterly, his dislike for the pro escaping despite his best efforts to keep it civil for the girl's.

"Just add it to the long list," Endeavor sighed, saddened by his lack of a cool head against the rodent.

"I've lost count at this point."

"At least you can," the red haired man somberly looked at the dying embers, spraying them down more and more as his scar aced a little, in his mind a proper punishment. This however, wouldn't keep the pro down, even if he fails, he must try to make things right in any way he can…no matter how uncomfortable it makes him.

"So…she seems very nice…"

"She is."

"Uh…how did you meet?"

"…We go to the same school."

"Oh, right."

….

….

"You aren't dating her to make a strong offspring, are you?"

Shoto slowly turned his head to face his father, both glaring at him with anger and oddly enough confusion, wanting to answer but felt like his expression was enough.

"…I knew that was a bad question as soon as it left my mouth."

"Then why did you ask it?"

"…Bonding?"

"…"

"…"

"Wanna put out the fire and eat," Endeavor asked.

"Yes."

"Good uh-"

"Done," Shoto put down his fire extinguisher, and walked over to the dinner table, leaving his father to take care of his side as he sat down next to Momo, and quietly sighed.

"So how'd it go," Fuyumi eagerly asked.

"Not well."

"Awkward small talk huh?"

Shoto nodded as he looked down, feeling guilty that he couldn't over power his complicated feelings toward his old man. Yaoyorozu soon reaching over, placing her hand on top of his to comfort him.

"It's alright, we know it's hard on you Shoto," she stroked his hand, allowing him to feel more at ease, his hand rose to gently grip hers, the girl's positive mental attitude, genuine concern for him, and understanding of his feelings never failed to get a smile out of him. He shifted his gaze over to her, a minor blush appearing on her cheeks, though they had been dating for a while his gentle and distinctly mismatched eyes stole her breath.

"Jeez, get a room," the elder sister joked, causing the two to blush a bit before breaking their trance. Fuyumi grinned at this, although she did feel a bit inadequate due to her own lack of love life compared to the rest of her family, but she was happy for her brothers finding someone special.

"S-sorry, that was probably improper," Momo nervously replied.

"No no it's fine, I shouldn't have joked."

"Is it because you're single," Shoto asked, oblivious to burn (Author: I swear I didn't mean to make that pun), causing his sister to grumble a little and Momo to lightly tap him to make him realize what he had said.

"Y-..yes Shoto, yes indeed," Fuyumi spoke through her teeth, as she lifted her cup of tea to take a drink.

"Did I say something wrong," Shoto asked genuinely confused, forcing his girlfriend to lean over and briefly explain, it soon dawning on him, "O-oh sorry sis."

"It's alright baby brother, I know you didn't mean anything by it," Fuyumi replied as she put her cup back down on the table, "So, uh, didn't one of your classmates do a work study under Hawks?"

"Well yes," the pony tailed girl answered, "Tokoyami worked a few weeks under him, why?"

"Oh nothing just curious," Fuyumi averted her gaze to the other side of the room, trying to appear disinterested but this didn't fool Momo, the clear crush Fuyumi had on the pro was as obvious as water being wet…atleast to most.

"Do you need a job at Hawks' agency?"

"N-no Shoto," Momo giggled, "It's because- "

"No," Endeavor growled out.

"D-dad when did you sit down," Fuyumi asked blushing brightly.

"While you conversated about my cohort, and no."

"No to what?"

"You aren't dating Hawks."

"I'm twenty-three."

"And I'll roast him like a duck if you date him."

"I think you mean a chicken," Shoto clarified.

"He'll be too burnt to identify."

"Oh quit being dramatic," Fuyumi pouted.

"I'm not being dramatic, I'm being honest."

"No, it's more overbearing."

"Put yourself in my shoes, a friend from work is dating your daughter, every time you pass each other and have to work on the same assignment you hear about each and every fight, date, and god forbid other things."

"He wouldn't talk about that with you, you already don't like talking to him."

"That may be true but-wait…how did you know that?"

"…Huh, oh did you guys hear that, I think the soups ready," Fuyumi sheepishly stood up and went over to the kitchen.

"But I didn't hear anything," Shoto tilted his head in confusion.

"Yes you did bro," Fuyumi shouted from the kitchen.

"Huh…did you hear anything Momo?"

"Yup."

"Hm," Shoto then looked down and began to eat his dinner, 'Am I going deaf?'

"And no you aren't going deaf," Momo answered his internal question and smiled as she began to eat.

Endeavor did the same, letting his rage quell over his daughter's desire, the meal being enjoyed all three as they waited for their fourth member to return in relaxed silence.

"So, how did you two meet," Endeavor asked, the real social question he was used to.
