Chapter 2 - The impossible battle
Disclaimer: I do not own Overlord!
Oh yeah~ Apparently, the Dragon emperor's real name is ''Bahamut'', but I don't really care, I like how the first random name Raocus that I though of sounds like. If you wan't me to change it then I'll do it starting from chapter 3. And about Tier magic, I think that the players could use it from the start since it is classified as magic that exists in the New World, but the other inhabitants of the New World could use it only after the use of the World Item. And about language... Do we have a clear event known when they started understand each other's language? Sure, it was probably done by a world item, but in my version of the story it was revealed that the spell that brought players into the New World has been used once before. And Ainz is carelessly jumping into battle with the Dragon emperor only because he thinks that he is going through the final event of Yggdrasil and he should spend it without worrying much about information, since it is but a game. Also, the concept of Wild magic in my story is the cause of it being similar to Tier magic as it too was brought into the New World centuries ago by the first Dragon emperor (At least in my story), thus instead of referring to their wild magic as just magic, they say wild magic because of the first Dragon emperor.
'Throne of Kings' was the world class item owned by the guild Ainz Ooal Gown, which they received as a reward for conquering the Great Underground Tomb of Nazarick on their first try. This particular item was later used as a throne for the Great Underground Tomb of Nazarick and was stationed on the 10th floor's throne room. Momonga would usually be the one to occupy the throne because of his position as the guild leader. Apart from its design as a throne, it did actually possess a few very useful abilities, one such ability came very useful in protection of the their guild base.
First of all, the throne had the ability to nullify any type of world item from activating in a certain range of area. This simple function was of great help during the 1500 player and NPC invasion, thanks to which Ainz Ooal Gown had a much easier time eradicating the foolish invaders that dared to step into their glorious home. Though the world item did forbid any type of world items of being used in a certain area, world items belonging to the same guild could still be used, as well as 'The Twenty'.
'The Twenty' was the name given to the twenty most overpowered world class items, that could affect even the strongest bosses, known as the world class enemies that were known to be immune to the effects of other, normal world items. And yes, one of the twenty was indeed used during the raid on the Great Underground Tomb of Nazarick, but that ended very badly, and not only for one of the NPCs created by Ainz Ooal Gown, but also to the foolish player who had dared to use that broken world class item in their base.
Secondly, the ''Throne of Kings'' had the ability to increase its occupant's stats on a whole other level, to the point where even a level 100 mage would be considered a level 100 warrior, and the same goes in reverse. This ability was very helpful to any player, especially so for magic caster's, since they could cast long distance offensive spells, while still being seated upon a throne, which the warrior class players could not do seeing as they would leave many openings and would have to deal with loads of restrictions when having a final showdown, which, by the way, never happened.
And last but not least, this particular world class item granted its user a buff, and no, it wasn't just some useful buff. This particular buff was far from normal, far from just helpful, and far from being just a cheat. This particular buff, which was added to the one seated upon the Throne of Kings, was a complete and utter cheat! This particular buff, which the world item, that for some bullshit reason wasn't among the world class items of ''The Twenty'' list, granted the throne's occupant an immortality status. And not just some immortality where the user's HP would recover in light speeds, no, it was far from that, in fact, it was even worse than the highest type of immortality, this buff made the user completely immortal while still being seated upon the throne, and the only way for anyone to beat a player using such a damnable cheat is by using hax abilities similar to how one of Momonga's old comrades, the one hailed as the strongest warrior among the 41 members of Ainz Ooal Gown, the World Champion class player - Touch Me - had used. Touch Me was the type of player who would always be armed with several such abilities, no, for some players, especially Momonga, the man himself was hax incarnate. Yes, Yggdrasil was filled with players that wielded cheat like abilities all the time, but Touch Me was on a level of his own.
But not all players, or bosses, were as hax as Touch Me, and the level 100 dragon standing before Momonga was neither. If there was at least one thing in which, the always paranoid player, Momonga was confident in, then that was the fact that there could be no other player or a boss as hax as Touch Me, well... with the only other exception being the strongest world class enemy, the 'Devourer of the Nine Worlds' and perhaps even the other World Champion class warrior of Muspelheim who had once turned himself into a world class enemy, but fortunately that guy had been defeated before Ainz Ooal Gown had to deal with him themselves.
Thus, with such a reassuring thought in his mind, Momonga just calmly sat upon his throne while enjoying his sweet, sweet buffs and also casting one maximized magic after another. He could afford wasting his magical power in such a way, after all, in his case mana exhaustion was not an issue, after all... his mana is limitless! After defeating a certain deity boss, Momonga had gained its supreme ability [Limitless Mana Pool], that granted its user unlimited amounts of magical power or MP for shorts. This skill was also one of the reasons why anyone should be extremely wary when facing Momonga in battle.
''[Maximized magic: Gravity Maelstrom]!'' Momonga cast yet another powerful spell that resembled a black orb of energy, that was thrown by him at the dragon, for some reason the dragon did not dodge, but instead thanked the attacks of Momonga. Momonga found this strange, because after casting [Life essence], a spell that allows the caster to see how much HP the target has, the dragon seemed to have received a lot of damage, no, after the dozen of maximized spells fired by Momonga, that were also strengthened by the [Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown], the dragon's HP seemed to have already decreased by 40%.
While casting one attack spell after another, although the glass dragon wasn't really dodging the incoming attacks, instead he just, while not standing still exactly, was blasting Momonga with its blazing breath attacks. He released these breath attacks imbued with enormous amounts of magical power that should've been more then enough to destroy an entire city each. But strangely enough, seeing as the Dragon's attacks were doing literally zero damage to Momonga, the two mighty beings ceased their attacks. The Dragon emperor was the first to do so, and noticing this strange act, Momonga did the same.
Momonga did not understand. The thought of the dragon ceasing its attacks in order to activate some sort of a chargeable attack slipped through Momonga's mind, but in the next moment he was forced to dismiss that idea. Why you ask? Because the dragon spoke!
''...H-How is that even possible!? Why are my attack having no effect on you!? How are you able to harm me!?'' Roared the Dragon emperor in rage. Momonga did not know this, but the Dragon emperor's voice was imbued with magical power, which was the reason why the air around them would seem to shake to any ordinary mortal. However, what truly surprised Momonga wasn't the dragon's powerful roar, but instead... the very fact that the dragon, that he had assumed to be but a mere level 100 NPC, did something that any player would consider impossible... the dragon spoke!
Sure, it was possible to program an NPC to be able to speak some words, but it was impossible to make out their words with such emotions, meaning that the weird glass dragon that he had never seen before anywhere on Yggdrasil did something just now that most, no, any of the players would consider utterly impossible! And to make things even more shocking, was the fact that the glass dragons crystal mouth had moved as he spoke! Like seriously!? Facial expressions were impossible to imitate even by the modern day virtual reality technology!
Momonga was in shock, the thought of this whole thing being just some sort of a prank done to him by those shitty devs came to mind, but he dismissed such an idea seeing as the GM call function did not work, and neither did the [Message] spell, that allowed a player to contact other players from far away distances. He could not contact the game administrators.
W-What the hell is going on!? Why can't I contact the administrators!? And why the hell does everything seem so real now!? Momonga started to panic, but was immediately calmed down by some strange green light that had engulfed his entire body for but a second. In the next moment, he was left with but a cold and calculating mind that allowed him to re-think this strange situation in which he had just found himself in.
Emotion suppression? Is that the cause of my status as an undead? Wait, what is going on right now? Why did that dragon just stop his attacks, no, wait, did he speak!? Like seriously, what the hell is going on!? This is so weird... OH! His looking at me, what do I do, wait... does he want me to speak? O-Okay, lets try addressing him, maybe his just a developer pooling some sort of prank on me or something! Right!?
''U-Um... h, hey there?'' Said Momonga as he addressed the dragon with a reproachful tone, he did so in hopes for not angering the strange being like he had done before. Unfortunately for Momonga, the dragon did not seem very interested in talking and instead used a tail swipe to attack Momonga.
Even if he had the immortality status from the throne, he still didn't want to receive an attack in case this was truly reality. With such thoughts in his mind, Momonga raised his staff in an attempt to cast his defensive magic, but stopped mid track when he thought of a way to check if the game had truly become real. He knew that such an idea was crazy and most likely impossible as well, but he had to know. And with such thought running through his mind, Momonga decided to receive the attack head on and see if he'll feel the pain caused to him or not.
In the next moment, the glass dragons giant tail hit Momonga in the face with force powerful enough to cause the air around them to run wild in all directions, thus sending any piece of rock or dust far away with extremely powerful shock waves.
And Momonga... he most certainly did feel the pain caused by this rage filled attack. Though he did possess an immortal status, that did not mean that he would automatically not receive any damage. His HP (hit points or health) dropped quite a bit, but thanks to his tremendously boosted stats and his immortal status, the lost HP recovered almost instantly. But even then, Momonga was surprised, shocked even, that the dragon had done so much damage to him with a mere tail swipe, but he was even more shocked about the fact that he had felt pain. If not for his undead status that nullified the feeling of pain, he would've been rolling on the ground while crying crimson tears from the amount of pain he had felt but for one second.
Ughh!? Christ that hurt like hell! Did the game actually become real? No, there has never been such an area even heard of in Yggdrasil... so... is, this.. a, another world? L-Like seriously? What do I even do then-!
Suddenly, Momonga's train of thoughts was interrupted by yet another of the glass dragon's tail swipes, but this time, having already confirmed the realism of his situation, Momonga evaded the incoming attack by activating one of the throne's ability, that was flight.
Yes. The throne had the function of flight, but unfortunately for Momonga, he, who had never even attempted to use this function before, had very great problems while piloting the crystal throne while mid air, but he did succeed in evading the dragon's powerful tail attack, but was sent flying by the created gust of wind nonetheless.
''Have dare you challenge your master like that!? I summoned you to this plane! Thus you must become my power source! Power! Give me PoweeeEEEEAAAAAAARRRRR! LEt mE dEvoUrER YoU!?'' Roared the Dragon emperor in rage and madness while attacking the flying throne and its occupant with his magically powered breath attacks. Momonga did not know this, but these attack were the dragon emperor's strongest ones, the [Solar breath], that had once slayed hundreds if not thousands of gods that had once ruled this realm, but were later destroyed completely by the dragon species that had proven to be far stronger then them, at least the True Dragon lords were.
What master? What power? Did he summon me to this other world as my game avatar only to eat me and take my character's abilities!? Momonga, hearing the mad dragon's words, felt enraged, more then that, he wanted to annihilate the dragon for even daring to think of him as food. Fortunately, before rage could take control over Momonga's mind, his emotion suppression kicked in and quickly calmed him down.
Though he now had hundreds of questions to ask the mad dragon, right now he had to think of his survival. Now that he understood that he had been summoned to a whole other world by this stupid dragon, Momonga finally noticed that he had been casting his spells instinctively all this time. This was strange, because in Yggdrasil Momonga had to use the game console to cast spells, but here he had done so with nothing but his instinct. He really had become his game avatar.
Unfortunately, he couldn't afford to think about these questions now, he had to go in blind here and make a big fat leap of fate, which meant that he would now have to blindly believe that each of his character abilities, as well as his equipment abilities, still worked the same as they had in the game.
He had no choice after all, and although most of his emotions had been suppressed by his undead racial trait, he could still feel some lingering feelings of regret in his now nonexistent heart, for breaking his number one rule in Yggdrasil, which was gathering information on your opponent before engaging them in combat, and having carelessly engaged the unknown level 100 dragon in battle, and not just some battle between two players or a player and an NPC, but a real, life and death battle.
If I don't play this right, I'll die! Ugh! That tail swipe almost got me! Screamed Momonga internally as he dodged yet another of the dragon's tail swipes while floating mid air with his throne. Although he did have several items from Yggdrasil that could resurrect him in case of him being killed, Momonga did not know if they would work as they did in the game. It wasn't a risk that he was willing to take, no, no sane person would possibly risk with their own life like that while believing in something as impossible as being able to resurrect from death!
Getting tired of the dragon's attacks, Momonga had thought of flying up in the sky in hopes of escaping the mad dragon in order to gather more information about the said opponent as well as assess the dragon's abilities in order to engage him in battle once more, he had sworn to defeat this dragon in the name of Ainz Ooal Gown after all, but unfortunately for Momonga... his summoner had picked a cave out of all the places in the world where to summon him! Thankfully the cave was very spacious as it could fit at least a hundred of dragons of similar size as his opponent.
Thanks to his undead racial skills, Momonga was more then able to see in the dark cave, more then that, he had not even noticed that it had been dark in the first place since for him it had looked like the day time all along. The wast cave allowed Momonga to freely dodge the dragon's attacks with much freedom, but unfortunately for Momonga... thanks to the dragon's several breath attacks, it would seem that the cave was slowly starting to cave in on itself.
This is bad. Thought Momonga as he noticed the falling rocks from the cave's ceiling. Since he was a magic caster, he wasn't confident in his body to survive the physical damage that he would receive in case of him getting buried alive in this cave by the falling rocks, but thankfully he was currently immortal, if the throne's ability could be believed in at least. But even then, Momonga was not planing on testing his ability to survive something like getting buried alive in some cave.
''I need to find the exit!'' Exclaimed Momonga in a loud voice as he dodged yet another attack. He knew that for some reason the dragon's breath attacks had no effect on him, so he could only assume that those had been breath attacks similar to the breath attacks of the ice dragon's from Yggdrasil to which Momonga had a compete immunity towards.
But why was this dragon's breath so fiery? It looked nothing like the blue flame of the ice dragons, but more like the breath attack of the fire dragons of Yggdrasil. Momonga found that weird, but since it did not affect him, he could only accept it as that and focus on gathering the information on the dragon's other abilities, that could actually pose a threat to Momonga.
Until this point, all Momonga had done was dodging the dragon's attacks and blasting him with repeated tenth tier [Maximized magic: Reality Slash] spell. The magic of Yggdrasil was a very easy to learn magic, without much complexity. It was known as the ''Tier Magic'', as it was split into ten tiers of magic. The first tier magic was the weakest while the tenth tier magic was the strongest. Spells could be strengthened by adding additional meta magics to the spells, but that in turn cost additional MP, which only players similar to Momonga could repeatedly cast, and with ease nonetheless.
The spell [Reality Slash] was a powerful spell that did a lot of damage, and it was one of the best damage-dealing spells on Momonga's immense spell repertoire. Of course, he did possess many higher damage dealing spells, but Momonga feared of how the spells would work in a real world. Similar to how the tenth tier [Reality Slash] seemed to literally slash through the very fabric of reality as it cut into the, now screaming in pain, dragon, Momonga possessed stronger spells as well, that would surely do more damage to the dragon, but in turn, such spells could, unlike in the game world where these spells did not affect the terrain, in the real world would become the cause of enormous amount of destruction.
''Though he seems to have gone mad, he is still extremely dangerous.'' Momonga snorted in frustration. This was the reason he hated dragons, because by Yggdrasil rules, the dragons were extremely powerful, even level 80 dragons could sometimes pose a threat to a level 100 player, and the reason behind that was their extremely high physical abilities as well as their high tier resistances and overall stats. In Yggdrasil, every dragon above level 85 was completely immune towards any type of illusion spell, which was the reason why Momonga couldn't just quietly sneak out of the cave by using the tenth tier [Perfect Unknowable] spell, that completely fooled all five senses.
Because of this, Momonga had to duke it out with the Dragon emperor, and keep dodging and attacking while trying to gather as much information on his opponent as he possibly could. ''Stop avoiding my attacks you bastard!'' Roared the Dragon emperor as he once more attacked Momonga with his [Solar Breath].
''Huh? W-Wait... Wait! You gonna bury us alive! Stop that-!'' Momonga yelled loudly at the idiot dragon who seemed to have completely lost all reasoning while still trying his best in order to avoid the falling rocks of the slowly collapsing cave while still floating with his crystal throne mid air. ''God damn it!'' Yelled Momonga as he raised his [Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown] high into the air and casting [Maximize Widen magic: Shark Tornado], in hopes of the strengthened 70 feet tall tornado that was filled with several level 90 sharks, would break through the cave's ceiling and reach the outside of the cave.
This was honestly a dumb and crazy idea, considering that he would most definitely get buried under the rocks of the collapsing cave, but considering that the cave was already collapsing, as well as the fact that no matter how much he tried, he could not find the exit, he had no better ideas than this. ''I'll survive this and make sure to kill this bastard!'' Yelled Momonga as he dodged yet another attack of the Dragon emperor.
Soon, the tornado broke through the cave's extremely high ceiling and reached the outside world, Momonga noticing this flew with his throne and quickly reached the outside where he was greeted by the starry night sky. He would've stopped to admire the beautiful view before him since in his old world he had not once seen an actual sky and not to even talk about stars. ''Beautiful.'' Was all Momonga could say as once he reached the outside world, but before he could start admiring the beautiful world any more he had to escape the mad dragon that was currently still taking damage from the [Shark Tornado] with several rocks falling on his head.
''Its my chance!'' Yelled Momonga as he quickly escaped the distracted Dragon emperor. Noticing this, the Dragon emperor leaped out of the cave as well in his final attempts to strike Momonga, but was too late seeing as Momonga had long since disappeared from the sight. Enraged the Dragon emperor roared like he had never before. ''BASTARD! RETURN YOU COWARD! YOU DESPICABLE TRRAAASSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH!?'' But soon the dragon coughed out a liquid that deeply resembled blood and in the next moment a loud crash was heard from his massive body falling powerlessly on the ground. If one looked closely they would see several deep and bloody wounds upon the Dragon emperor's colossal crystal body.
Fortunately, Momonga did not have to listen to the Dragon emperor's mad ravings as he had long since escaped the battle field. ''What madness.'' Sighed Momonga as he piloted the 'Throne of Kings' high in the sky. ''Apparently, that guy was the Dragon emperor... does that mean that all the dragons in this world are that mad? Wait, before that, I need to find some place to hide at. There could be other dragons, his minions, searching for me right now... this is seriously messed up, I really hate dragons now.'' Said Momonga as he shot through the night sky with speed unrivaled by even the strongest of True Dragon lords.
''F-Father! Are you alright!?'' Exclaimed Tsaindorcus Vaison, the eldest son of the Dragon emperor, after noticing his fathers wounded body lying there upon the rubble of what was once known as the holy cave of the first Dragon emperor. Recalling the entities that had been summoned the first time that the accursed spell had been cast, Tsaindorcus wasn't all that surprised about his father's sorry state. He wouldn't be at all surprised if his father had been killed by whatever entity that his father had o so foolishly summoned, but still... Raocus was his father nonetheless, thus worried about his father's health, Tsaindorcus made haste in order to reach his father's side.
Fortunately or unfortunately for Tsaindorcus, his father, with a loud cough of blood, answered his worried son with an arrogant attitude. ''Shut up! 'Cough'! That bastard ran away like the coward he is!'' Said the Dragon emperor with an arrogant tone, but his wounded state made him look very pathetic. Seeing this, Tsaindorcus couldn't help but sigh. His father, the Dragon emperor, was an idiot, no, not an idiot... just mad.
After the lose of his wife, Raocus had become more anxious about his power. No dragon knew this except his own son, but he had long since reached his limit. Without growing any stronger, Raocus attempted to secretly summon a powerful being from another world and defeat it as well as take its powers for his own, but he had failed miserably. Raocus, now having regained his sanity, felt a chill run down his spine.
Sure, he enjoys his throne and acting all mighty, as if he were above all others, but at the same time... he loved his people, his race, his brothers and sisters. And now regret fell over him once he realized that he had potentially doomed his entire race by summoning that strange, skeletal creature... what was its name... Ainz Ooal Gown? He hadn't heard of such a name before, but even he could tell that that was a mighty name as befitted a powerful being as that skeleton that had nearly killed him.
No. Even calling it a mere skeleton seemed highly offensive to Raocus, that creature was nothing less then the very incarnation of Death. Now that he recalled seeing the strange being for the first time, he recalled how he had found himself at a complete loss of words after seeing the treasures that adorned its body at the time. Every bone in the creature radiated power, no, the creature itself was power incarnate.
For the first, no, second time in his entire life, Raocus... felt fear. Not a fear for himself, but instead... fear for whatever monster he had brought upon this world, the fear for his people. He realized that he had done something extremely foolish, he had made the same mistake as his father had once made, but this time it was different. This time Raocus, unlike his father, had somehow survived the encounter with the strange being, and this time he will prevent that terrible tragedy of the years past to ever repeat itself. He was determined to make it so.
