Neo eventually stopped going to school.
Not because she had been pulled out, but because she had become so depressed that she was barely getting out of bed.
No matter how much she wanted to ignore the other kids and live her own life, it still hurted that nobody was on her side.
At least Roman was there for her. She spent many nights huddled next to him to avoid the nightmares that were starting to plague her, where she was lost and alone watching Beacon left to ruins, holding a recognizable hat in her hands.
Neo knew she could count of the teachers at Beacon too, but deep down she blamed Glynda for forcing her to go to school and causing her current situation.
That's why Neo had stayed home, halting the combat training she had still been doing with Glynda, mostly on the week-ends. She didn't want to face Glynda and risk going back to school.
She also asked Roman a question that she had started asking herself when she saw how the kids at school reacted to her mutism.
Why did you never bother me on why I couldn't speak ?
Roman read her note and burst out laughing. Neo glared at him.
" Sorry, sorry. I just never thought you'd ask me that, although it should be expected after what those kids did." he explained, " In my field of work, it's normal for people to have secrets. I never knew why exactly you didn't speak, but I never cared. We can communicate just fine without."
Neo hugged him, satisfied with his answer.
When the first weekend came, and Neo didn't go to Beacon, Glynda came to visit. Neo had been dreading her visit all week, scared that her school would have called her to say she hadn't come to classes.
So when she heard someone knock on the door, she bolted and hid under the sheets in her bed while Roman went to open up the door.
" Hello... Mister Torchwick. Did you see Neo anywhere ? She hasn't come all week and she usually never miss an opportunity to train. I... We've been worried." said Glynda.
" Oh, so you do care." teased Roman before turning serious, " She's been harassed for months now, how do you think she feels."
" Don't blame me, Torchwick." she seethed back, " You know as well as I that a child her age need to have some friends. Surely it's not as bad as you make it sound."
" I don't know." shot back Roman, " All I'm sure of is that I get called to the principal's office at least twice a week because Neo punched some kid that harassed her, and somehow she hasn't been thrown out yet."
" I..." Glynda was baffled
" Didn't know ? Thought that because you chose the top schools everything would be great ?" started Roman angrily, " Well I have news for you. Life isn't all sunshine and rainbows, otherwise you wouldn't have people like me doing what we do to survive."
" Did you just admit to living a life of crime ? " asked Glynda, her eyes narrowed.
" I've served my time." simply said Roman, " Don't dodge the question."
Glynda adjusted her glasses.
" I'm fully aware that many people suffer. Part of our jobs as Hunters is to stop the occasional aura user that becomes to strong for local law enforcement to manage, and I had plenty of time to see the worse of our city." she answered, " That's why I paid to get Neo into one of the best schools there is."
" A fat lot of good that did her." shot back Roman, " People are the same whether they're rich or poor. Sure if Neo had been a normal girl she'd have gotten a far better education up there, but she's already leagues beyond even the smartest of the kids. And she's mute. You won't find a single school where she'll fit in. Especially with the record she now has."
" So what ? You want to pull her out ? She needs some kind of social life ! " shouted Glynda.
" She was doing just fine before ! " shouted back Roman.
Glynda stopped, looking agast.
" Hmf, that shut you up." said Roman.
Glynda just glared at him and slightly jerked her head for Roman to look behind him.
Neo had gotten out of the bedroom and had started sobbing when she realized Glynda and Roman were fighting over her. Roman paled instantly.
Seeing they had stopped arguing and that Glynda had seen her, Neo rushed to hide behind Roman, and looked at Glynda with apprehension.
It hurt for Glynda when she saw Neo be so wary of her, and it hurted even more when she understood the implications of the note Neo was showing her.
Why did you never bother me on why I couldn't speak ?
" Because I'm used to it." she explained, " Even with Aura, it's common for a Huntsman or Huntress to come back from a mission with a missing limb or sense, as well as heavy psychological trauma. So we learn to just act normally and accept what they became. That's why Ozpin wants mandatory counseling sessions, to help them without making them feel ostracized."
Neo left Roman's side to grab a pen and write, before showing it to Glynda.
Does that mean you want me to go to those sessions ?
" Honestly ? Yes." said Glynda gently, " But I also know that it will only make things worse if you're not wiling to explain your feelings to the counselor, so I won't push it."
Then Neo turned her note over and showed Glynda what she had written on the other side.
Will you force me to go back to school ?
Glynda sighed. She was still convinced that Neo needed to have friends her age, otherwise she might grow overly dependent on a few people or become disconnected with society.
However, she now understood that elementary school had been a nightmare for Neo, and she didn't want Neo to push her away.
" I won't. If that's really what you want, we'll even pull you out officially and go back to how things were last year." she said.
Neo hugged Glynda, tears of joy falling as she didn't have to fear going back there ever again.
For the next few years, Neo was happy with her life. What time she didn't spend training was used to learn, as Glynda had taken on teaching her science along with Dust, Oobleck was teaching her History and Geography and Peach was teaching her botanics.
Even if all four Kingdoms had been mostly isolated for thousands of years, Remnant still only had a single language, as the leaders of each Kingdom made sure to enforce a common tongue, so at least she didn't have to learn a new language.
What Neo prefered the most though, was the time she spent on her days off helping Roman on his heists. She really liked the thrill she got from risking being caught, and enjoyed the fights she would get into against the occasional security guard.
With Neo added to the party, and Roman's improved knowledge of thievery, they had moved on from looting homes to breaking into museums or jewelry stores and stealing whatever they could take.
So now their heists weilded far more cash, but only happened occasionally, and the benefits tended to take time to be yielded.
Neo also had been experimenting with one particular type of Dust at the center. Hard-light Dust.
She was fascinated with the stuff. The ability to make anything appear as she willed made her imagination go wild. However, she was disappointed when she realized everything she made would have the same cyan color.
So she spent much of her free time merging hard-light Dust with anything she could just to try and get other colors to appear. Eventually, she managed to get something satisfying that didn't instantly explode. A mix of Dust containing mostly hard-light and glass Dust with all the other types sprinkled-in.
This made a new type of Dust she had never seen before, it was a pure bright white, contrary to wind Dust that was of a duller white.
Dust [50/50 AP] (Illusion, powdered) : Illusion Dust allows it's user to create solid illusions that shatter at the slightest impact. Contrary to other types of Dust, illusion Dust do not glow on activation and can be merged with other Dust types to hide their glow as well.
[You made a new type of Dust. You gain 2 Intelligence and 1 Wisdom]
Neo was overjoyed at the popups, and immediatly went to work on making a new canopy using mostly this Dust type for Silence.
Speaking of which, as Neo had grown over the last few years from 110 cms to 136 cm, she had updated Silence several times to fit her as she grew. She never made any significant changes, but she had sown several different canopies that she would switch depending on what she wanted to do.
It was a bit annoying to manually change it every time, but she was learning mechashifts to hopefully one day find a fix.
Harold would be able to make something, but she really wanted to come up with it herself.
Once she changed the canopy of Silence with the new one, she looked at its updated skill
Dust canopy [Your canopy is filled with illusion Dust, allowing you to use its effects. ~50 uses left]
She then started training with her new Dust type, creating new skills that however didn't give her any extra stat points.
Illusion copy [Creates a copy of anyone, including yourself, within 2 meters of you. Intelligence plus 5 against Intuition]
[Intuition is someone's capability to feel that something is wrong]
Disguise [Change your appearance. Intelligence plus 5 against Intuition]
Invisibility [Uses illusions to make yourself invisible. Continuously drains Dust AP. Invisibility allows you to hide yourself using Stealth checks even if you don't have any cover. Also grants a 40 bonus to Stealth]
Neo was extatic, she loved her new abilities and really wanted to mess around with it. She started playing pranks on the students and staff at Beacon. Her favorite was catching students doing something wrong and showing them flashs of Glynda, startling them.
Their reactions as they were startled were often quite amusing to watch, as Beacon students were pretty imaginative in how they decided to flee the scene.
" Quite amusing indeed." said a voice next to her as she had made students bolt away for what was at least the tenth time that day.
Neo was startled and instantly went invisible as a reflex.
" I see you found your semblance." said Ozpin, which had been the one who scared her.
Neo got out of invisibility and looked at Ozpin weirdly. He said he had an extensive knowledge of Dust, so he should easily be able to sense that she was using it.
" I'd rather have people think it's your semblance than know you can make illusions with Dust." he explained, " It's best if this skill were to be unique to you."
Neo's eyes shone at the idea of being capable of doing something nobody else ever will, and nodded happily. She was already planning on using this extensively, so having people think it was her semblance would make them believe she had little limitations on its use.
Neo faced Ozpin and got into a fighting stance with a smile. Ozpin smirked and decided to humor her.
Neo dashed forward and used Silence to stab Ozpin. The headmaster blocked the strike masterfully with his cane. Neo jumped back before lunging again. Every single time, Ozpin would simply block or parry her strikes.
But Neo enjoyed the spar nonetheless, if it could even be called that way. Ozpin was doing his best to block at the last second, making sure it didn't look easy for him so Neo wouldn't get frustrated.
He smiled as he saw Neo stop to catch her breath. His smile widened when he felt her use Dust.
Neo reappeared next to him, her strike already halfway done. Ozpin still blocked it though.
" Nice try. You almost got me." he lied.
Neo's eyes brightened in joy, but not for that reason. She had gotten a new popup she had been waiting for a while.
[Congratulations, you have found your class, Illusionist. You have gained 2 Intelligence, 1 in Reflexes and 1 in Will. More informations on your new class can be found on your stats screen]
[You have lost a status effect, Classless]

[You have gained a new status effect, Redirected growth]
[You are now level 1. You will stop gaining stat points from training and will earn experience points instead. Your height also won't grow anymore. Your observe skill has improved]
Neo cursed inwardly. She was already very small for her age and didn't appreciate being stuck at such a short size.
She still looked at her screen to see how she had changed.

" Does that mean this little spar has ended ? " asked Ozpin with a chuckle as Neo wasn't attempting to fight anymore.
Neo blushed, nodded, then darted away in that order. She wanted to observe all the teachers again to see what was added, which was only their classes and ages.

Neo remembered what Oobleck had taught her about Mount Glenn in his history lessons. He had explained how tragic the event was and that many people died there, although he hadn't gone into too many details, no matter how much she pressed him to.
Still, she knew enough to tell that Roman had went through hell, so she decided to give him a hug.
" Huh ? What's the hug for kiddo ? " he asked.
Neo didn't give any kind of answer and simply squeezed harder, while reading the two additional popus that gave her more information.
[Combat advantage : you gain a combat advantage over an opponent whenever they are in a situation where they'll have a hard time blocking your attacks. This can be when they are against multiple ennemies, stunned, distracted or simply caught off guard. It gives a bonus of 2 on your attack roll]
[Critical strikes : whenever someone attacks, a 1d20 is rolled to decide if the attack hits. If that dice rolls a 1, you critically misses which can potentially have bad consequences for you. If it roll a 20, you critically hit, dealing the maximal amount of damage. Then you add your different modifiers to the attack and check against one of your target's defenses to see if you hit or missed. This means that no matter your opponent, you at least have a 5% chance to hit or miss]
Following her level up, Neo discovered something. Namely, that killing people gave her experience points.
If she enjoyed killing before, now she loved it. Neo started to purposefully mess up on her heists with Roman just so she could get into fights and kill every single security guard they saw, much to Roman's displeasure.
After a few close calls, he ended up chewing Neo out for her behaviour. He knew Neo had always enjoyed doing the killing, and he didn't mind as he'd rather not get his hands dirty, but this was starting to go too far. He didn't want her to go full blown crazied serial killer.
Neo looked kind of apologetic after his rant, and she stopped messing up on purpose, so he thought he had gotten through to her.
Neo, however, had simply decided to keep her search for experience out of Roman's eyes.
She still wanted to enjoy herself though, so she only targeted people who would fight back until the end. Which was hard to find, at first.
She had started with the White Fang. She only ever saw them in protests, but the people on TV always said they were a bunch of troublemakers. And they had said that the one that had attacked her was part of their group, so maybe they would fight too ?
She still disguised herself before ambushing some of them though, just in case they'd run. Which they did. She didn't manage to find a single one that stayed to fight.
After several unsuccessful attempts, Neo gave up on riling faunuses and changed target.
She knew Beacon students would stay and fight, but she knew she wouldn't be able to fight four of them right now. Moreover, she didn't want to risk being recognized, and to a lesser degree, she didn't want Glynda to worry.
And she didn't want the added risk coming from Glynda getting involved in finding who had killed her students.
So Neo looked at the underworld, mostly at the gangs that once were part of her parents' empire. They were numerous, weak, and maybe they would fight her ?
She wasn't sure, and she was a bit afraid that the leaders would recognize her, but it had been six years since her parents died. Surely they wouldn't see her as a rallying point anymore ?
Just in case, she'd only attack the goons, and only when there were a few of them. She didn't want them to run or to be overwhelmed by their numbers.
She couldn't use aura after all, so she needed to be careful and not overextend herself.
Her first target was a couple of truants, sent to kill a wanabee traitor from their little gang. Neo was growing frustrated as she hadn't killed anyone in weeks, and wanted to be sure her next fight wouldn't turn tail and run.
Moreover, she wanted to see how their own objective would react, and if she could grab herself a third kill to enjoy.
She had observed the two truants, but didn't bother to remember much. They were both level 0, with a focus on strength, like most of the gang members she had observed before.
Neo, on the other hand, was already level 3 from her previous kills, and she expected those two to give her the last bit of experience she needed to get to level 4.
She hadn't gained any stats, but she could tell that the level itself gave her bonuses, as she still grew stronger, faster and smarter with each level up.
Neo followed the two until they stopped in front of a tall building and looked up.
" Which floor is she at ? " asked the first truant.
" The twelfth one." sighed the other.
They grumbled as they opened the door, oblivious to Neo's invisible presence as she followed them inside.
Once the door closed, she went into action. She already had all the information she needed to deal with their target herself, so she could kill the two of them now.
Neo took some powdered fire Dust she had hidden in the many pocket of her outfits, and threw it at them while she attacked the closest one.
They were both taken into the explosion.
- 10 HP
- 9 HP
Then her swing hit.
- 5 HP
The guy she attacked was knocked out instantly, and she turned towards the other one with a grin.
He threw a punch and Neo shattered into pieces. She was on his side and stabbed his open neck with the tip of Silence.
- 4 HP
He fell to the ground, dead
Neo then walked over to the one that was unconscious and stabbed her heel in his neck. She leaned onto it until she heard a satisfying snap and got a popup notifying her of her experience gain, and thus his death.
[Congratulations. You are now level 4. Due to your training and various activities, you have gained 1 Dexterity and 1 Charisma]
Neo widened her eyes a bit. She hadn't gained any stat points on her previous level ups.
[Every few levels, you gain some stat points depending on your training and behaviour te reflect any change in speciality]
Well that explained it.
Neo walked up the stairs to the twelfth floor of the building, disguised as one of the two men she had just killed.
There was two doors, but only one had signs of being opened regularly.
Neo knocked. She wanted to be sure the one inside would fight, so she gave her an opportunity to run if she wanted.
The door opened, revealing a young woman. She had a few tatoos on her bare arms and looked a bit intimidating, although most people looked intimidating to Neo at first.
" Where's your pal ? " asked the woman coldly, " What do you want ? "
Neo had her illusion glare at her. That should explain the lack of speech.
" None of my business, I know, sheesh." said the woman as she threw her hands up, " Come in."
Neo followed the woman in, taking the time to observe her.

Neo didn't really look any further than her stats and level. Just like the two other, that one would be easy.
She followed Asphalt to the living room. Somehow it felt like she was being watched. Neo started being wary of her surroundings.
" I know you've been sent here to kill me. So how about we cut to the chase ? " said Asphalt.
Just as she said that, someone burst out of a nearby closet and attacked the disguised Neo. Neo blocked with Silence, dispelling the illusion.
" You..." said the newcomer.
Neo took the opportunity to attack the new face, swinging Silence into their stomach.
- 9 AP
Neo did a backflip and landed away, dodging the punch Asphalt had thrown to protect her friend. Neo then put Silence on her shoulder and smirked. She had started looking down on her opponents recently, and even though Glynda had lectured her about taking everyone seriously, no matter how weak they are, she had also encouraged Neo to keep showing that behaviour as she fought.
She had explained that making it seem like you looked down on people would anger her opponents and they would thus make more mistakes. So long as she didn't really look down on them, everything was fine.
Neo decided to observe that newcomer. It seemed she knew her, and she had Aura, so she wanted to be sure she could take her on.

" Do you know her ? " asked Asphalt.
" She's a kid that one of our teachers trains. But it doesn't make sense. Why would she be after you, and why would she be disguised as one of those guys ? " answered Viridian.
Neo kept smiling as the two young women talked, but was cursing inwardly. Now, even if they fled, she couldn't let them live. Otherwise Glynda would have many questions she wouldn't like Neo's answers to.
Asphalt had equipped brass knuckles while she wasn't looking, and Viridian had her weapon, a spiked chain, which Neo observed.
Denperia : A weapon meant to tear grimm apart. Also works on people if needed.
Proficiency : 3
Enhancement : 1 to attacks and damage
Melee damage : 2d4
It was an unusual weapon, but still quite simple. Neo didn't want to be hit by it though. From her experience with her semblance, she could now guess how much damage it would deal if it hit her.
Here, it was anywhere between 9 to 15 damage. So any hit would kill her instantly. There was that semblance she needed to be wary of too, but at least she would be sure that she could take a hit.
The two realized Neo hadn't attacked yet and thought they could talk things through.
" Hey kid, we don't want to fight if we don't have to, so could we just..." started Viridian, only to be interrupted by Neo's illusion disappearing as Neo reappeared right next to her, and threw some blue powder.
She barely had time to realize it was ice Dust went it activated, encasing both her and Asphalt in ice.
- 7 AP
- 5 HP
It was one of Neo's weakest Dust attack, however it slowed the two down from the added weight, and the cold.
Viridian immediatly swung her weapon, not in the mood to talk anymore as it was clear Neo was in for a fight.
Neo slid under the chain and into Viridian's guard. Asphalt was close, but her punch was blocked by Silence. Viridian left hand let go of her weapon and was swung towards Neo as she redirected her chains with her right arm.
Neo stepped back to dodge the swing, but she still felt it.
- 3 HP
Neo didn't take the time to rub the Aura imprint left on her cheek, and decided to take down Viridian's Aura first.
She couldn't afford to get hit again by that semblance of hers, and once she wouldn't have Aura, she wouldn't be able to activate it.
The spiked chain came down on her and she blocked it with Silence. Then the other side of the chain was swung towards her now open side.
Neo shattered into pieces as the chain hit her, and reappeared behind Viridian. She stabbed the aspiring Huntress in the back of her right leg.
- 3 AP
- 4 HP
Viridian's right leg reflexively kneeled as Viridian's Aura went down, and Neo swung Silence towards Viridian head, as it was now down at her level.
Asphalt punched Silence away, saving her friend for now. Neo hadn't said her last word though. Now that Viridian was out of Aura, she wanted to at least knock Asphalt unconscious, as she feared the young woman would run the moment the Huntress-in-training died.
Asphalt jumped over Viridian to attack Neo, and Neo simply stepped aside and swung Silence at the back of the woman's head.
- 6 HP
It knocked her down, and when Asphalt's head hit the ground Neo got the notification of her death.
Neo grinned and switched to Viridian, who had stood up and swung her chains towards her. The strike was telegraphed though so Neo grinned as she knocked the chain away with Silence before she threw some lightning Dust at Viridian.
- 9 HP
Viridian screamed one last time as the Dust activated and electrocuted her.
The following day, in a classroom filled with students entered Glynda.
" I apologize to everyone, but Miss Gleene won't be able to hold classes, as she is mourning her sister's passing." she said, filling the room in gloom, " Before letting you leave, we'll hold a minute of silence for her sister and Miss Curt, a first year that died protecting her."
The minute passed, and the students then left the heavy atmosphere of the room.
Once they were all gone, Glynda left the room as well, a determined look on her face.
She didn't know who had killed one of her students, but she was going to find out.
She was going to make them regret their life choices.
And hopefully make the world a bit safer for Neo.
So, last chapter I did a mistake in making the rundown of Neo's stealth vs Ozpin's perception's as I stupidly used the Dexterity modifier instead of Wisdom. It's fixed, Neo still wins but only barely (21 to 20).
Now, for those interested, here's the rundown of Neo's chances to hit against Viridian, and vice-versa.
Neo : 1d20 for attacking plus 3 from Dexterity, 4 from Intelligence, 2 from Level, 2 from Proficiency (if the attack uses Silence), 1 from Enhancement (if the attack uses Silence) = 1d20 plus 9(12) against Viridian's defences.
So for attacks using Silence, Neo goes against Viridian's AC meaning she has a 80% chance to hit. For her Dust attacks, she goes against the other Defenses, mostly Fortitude as it's the lowest and Neo doesn't have Will attacks. In that case, Neo has a 70% chance to hit.
Also, if Neo was invisible she would have a combat advantage, increasing her hit chance by another 10%, giving her a 90% and 80% chance to hit respectively.
Viridian : 1d20 for attacking plus 4 from Dexterity, 3 from Proficiency, 1 from Level, 1 from Enhancement = 1d20 plus 9.
Neo always having access to her illusions means she has 21 AC, so Viridian had a 45% chance to hit.
