I recently re-watched Tone Death, and I realized that Astrid doesn't really sing at all. It's too bad that we don't see Hiccup and Astrid sing together, so I wrote this. (Just a note, I do change the lyrics to the song a bit, but I only did it because it seemed to fit the story better.) Hope you enjoy!
"Okay, maybe, maybe if I try this-" Hiccup carefully poured the Nightmare gel into the canister built into the hilt of his sword. "Come on, please work, please work."
Sadly, it did not. The gel leaked out onto the blade.
He sighed. "Oh, well, guess that means back to tweaking-"
Then, all of a sudden, there was a knocking and a faint screeching. Hurrying to the door, Hiccup flung it open, and the minute he did, his ears hated him for it. The screeching came from Garff, the baby Deathsong, who at this moment, was being carried in Astrid's arms.
"Hey, Astrid!" Hiccup said.
"What?!" Astrid asked in a loud tone.
"I said, 'Hey, Astrid!' " Hiccup repeated, this time much louder.
"Oh! Sorry! It's a little hard to hear because of someone!" Astrid held Garff, who let out an ear-piercing scream.
"Yeah, yeah, I know," Hiccup grimaced. "Wait, is it my turn with him, or-"
Astrid huffed and let Garff down on the floor, who stopped screeching for a bit upon reaching it.
"No, no, it's not," Astrid sighed, crossing her arms. "But, Hiccup, this is getting a little annoying. I've shushed him so many times, but honestly, I don't think he can hear me over his incessant wailing."
"Well, Garff is a baby, Astrid," Hiccup mentioned. "And I know, it can be grating on the nerves and ears after a while."
"I just- I was hoping you could maybe help me with him," Astrid began. "Since you're so good with dragons."
"I don't know about baby ones, but yeah, sure," Hiccup smiled; he loved any excuse he had to be with Astrid alone.
Then, Garff let out another screech, which made Toothless growl and whine.
"He's been like this all night!" Astrid yelled over the din. "I don't know why! I fed him and everything!"
"Did you sing to him?" Hiccup asked, his hands over his ears.
Astrid looked at him for a moment. "Yes, of course. Of course I did."
Garff shrieked.
"You sure about that?!" Hiccup cried.
"Okay, okay, fine, I didn't!" Astrid replied.
Hiccup eyed her, confusedly.
"Don't give me that look, Hiccup," Astrid said, shifting her weight uncomfortably. "Look, I don't. . .I just don't. . .sing, okay?"
Hiccup cocked his head at her. It was a little strange, seeing Astrid. . .nervous. He almost never did. After all, she was Astrid Hofferson, famous for showing almost no emotion, save anger, of course. But, seeing her now, Hiccup was kind of astounded to see that under all that armor was just an ordinary girl who felt nervous like he did. Hiccup was a naturally anxious person, so seeing someone like Astrid displaying the same emotion kind of felt reassuring.
Hiccup smiled at her. "Singing's not that hard, y'know. It's just like talking, except you move your voice up and down-"
"That's not what I mean!"
Was it Hiccup's imagination or was Astrid. . .blushing? She must have felt embarrassed.
Quickly, Astrid turned away, evidently trying to hide her face. "Look, I just. . .I can sing, I just. . .don't want to. I-"
"Hey, it's okay, I get it," Hiccup reassured her, and he touched her shoulder.
Then, he noticed that upon him doing that, she stiffened. Oh, no, he thought. I shouldn't have done that. Astrid doesn't like being touched, I should know that. Oh, Hiccup, why did you do that?
But then, Astrid turned around with a sigh. "Do you really have to sing to him?"
"Well," Hiccup began, nervously, "I mean, you don't have to a-alone. I could. . .help if you wanted me to."
Astrid squinted. "You and I. . .we sing. . .together? Like a duet?"
Hiccup shrugged. "It was just-just a thought. We don't have to if-"
The baby Deathsong screeched unhappily.
"Well, we don't really have a choice, I guess," Astrid said, covering her ears.
Toothless growled angrily. Just sing already and make the stupid thing SHUT UP!
Lunging forward, Hiccup picked up Garff by his abdomen and began rocking him back and forth.
"Hey, buddy, it's okay," Hiccup soothed, sitting down against the wall. "Calm down, you're okay."
Garff still was screeching, but it was not the ear-splitting noise that it was, so that was somewhat of an improvement. Astrid crouched down and sat next to Hiccup and stroked the baby dragon's little snout. Garff quieted a little more, but he was still fussing. Hiccup looked at Astrid with some surprise. He had never really seen this gentle, motherly side of her before. It almost seemed strange coming from her, but she was known to be compassionate when she wanted to be. Hiccup had seen it a few times, but he noticed it was only around him.
Astrid's blue eyes turned up and met his green eyes. How beautiful they were. They were like sapphires. No, they were more beautiful than sapphires. They somehow sparkled with an enchanting light. . .
Garff fussed again as Hiccup's arms stopped the rocking motion.
"Sorry, sorry," he muttered and began humming a song.
On occasion, he heard his father sing it. It was not really a lullaby, but sometimes he sang it that way. It was a love ballad, and whenever he heard the tune, he thought of Astrid. Maybe, someday, they would dance to it, and it would become their ballad. Slowly and quietly, Hiccup sang:
"I'll swim and sail on savage seas
With ne'er the fear of drowning
And gladly ride the waves of life. . ."
He turned his eyes up and looked at Astrid, who was smiling at him.
". . .if you will only love me.
No scorching sun nor freezing cold
Will stop me on my journey
If you will promise me your heart. . ."
He paused. Astrid's eyes widened. They turned left and right nervously. She blushed bright pink as she cleared her throat and looked down.
"And love me for eternity. . ."
Hiccup felt a smile spread across his face. Her voice was beautiful. Prettier than he had imagined.
"My dearest one, my darling dear,
Your mighty words astound me. . ."
Taking a deep breath, Astrid turned her head up.
"But I've no need of mighty deeds
When I feel your arms around me."
Hiccup continued:
"But I would bring you rings of gold
I'd even sing you poetry
And I would keep from all harm
If you would stay beside me."
With a small smile, Astrid seemed to relax a bit.
"I have no use for rings of gold
I care not for your poetry
I only want your hands to hold. . ."
"I only want you near me."
Their voices combined as they harmonized:
"To love, to kiss, to sweetly hold
For the dancing and the dreaming
Through life's sorrows and its joys
I'll keep your laugh inside me.
I'll swim and sail on savage seas
With ne'er the fear of drowning
And gladly rides the waves of life
If you will love me. . ."
Hiccup and Astrid stared into each other's eyes.
"If you will love me. . ."
Suddenly, Hiccup found Astrid drawing closer to him, and then, he noticed that he was, too. He was not even trying to. His body was just acting on its own. He could feel her breath on his face. Astrid's eyes closed, and his slid shut in response.
"Hiccup?" came Astrid's soft voice.
"Yeah?" Hiccup murmured, his lips nearly touching hers.
Then, he perceived a soft purring coming from his lap. Opening his eyes, he looked down, and Astrid's gaze followed his. The little baby dragon was curled up in a ball, snuggled up in Hiccup's arms.
"He's asleep," Astrid whispered with a small laugh. "I can't believe it."
"Yeah," Hiccup murmured, absentmindedly.
He hardly believed that he had nearly kissed Astrid. He was so close. Why did he stop? Something inside him just made him. . .hesitate for some reason. Well, it was a bad time anyway, Hiccup thought to himself. Besides, I'd probably have screwed it up somehow.
Astrid leaned against the wall and heaved a sigh. "I hope kids aren't like this. I mean, tell you the truth, I actually hope to have kids. . .someday."
"Well," Hiccup started, passing a hand through his tousled hair, "if it's any consolation, I think you'll be a great mom."
Astrid chuckled softly and looked down. "Thanks for, uh, helping me with Garff."
"Uh, anytime," Hiccup smiled. "Hey, should we-?"
"Oh, yeah, I forgot." Astrid stood up, Hiccup following suit. "I should lie him down."
"Here," Hiccup whispered and handed her a sleeping Garff. "Oh, careful, support the head-"
"Right, right." Astrid smiled up at him. "Thank you, Hiccup. I really mean it." Then, leaning in quickly, she gave him a peck on the cheek. "Good night, Hiccup. Sleep well."
"G'night, Astrid," Hiccup replied, smiling. As she turned and was half-way to the door, he added, "And by the way, you have the most beautiful voice I've ever heard."
Astrid stopped in her tracks. Turning around, Hiccup saw her blue eyes sparkle and shine at him.
Tucking a wisp of hair behind her ear, Astrid let out a small laugh. "Sweet dreams, Dragonboy."
And she disappeared, her golden hair swishing behind her. For a few moments, Hiccup stood there with a silent grin on his face. He sighed happily.
Toothless brushed up against his side. Buddy, you've really got it bad for her.
"Yeah," Hiccup said, absently. "Yeah, she's. . .Astrid's wonderful. Just. . .wonderful. . ."
Toothless shook his head with a smirk. You're never gonna tell her, are ya?
"Tell her what?" Hiccup sighed, still staring at the doorway.
How you feel. My gosh, you two are so obviously perfect. Am I the only one who sees it?
"Oh, I'll tell her. Someday."
Hiccup could not stop thinking about Astrid. He could still hear her voice inside his head. She sounded like an angel. How could she ever be ashamed of singing? She had the most beautiful voice in the world. A fantasy danced in his head of he and Astrid on a cliff at sunset. He was spinning her around, holding her by the waist as she laughed delightedly. He set her down. Astrid smiled at him, her golden hair dazzling in the setting sunlight. They were drawing closer. His arms were wrapping around her, her hands went to his hair as they leaned in, their lips nearly touching. . .
Toothless nudged his friend out of his daze. Hiccup? You need to go to bed.
"Hm? Oh, yeah, bed," Hiccup said dreamily.
At an unusually slow pace, Hiccup climbed the stairs up to the loft where his and Toothless' bedroom was. He reached the top of the stairs and stopped, much to his friend's annoyance.
Toothless lightly pushed him towards his bed. Come on, lie down.
"I'm going, I'm going," Hiccup muttered, a smile frozen on his face.
He climbed into bed and stared up at the ceiling.
Toothless growled. Covers.
"What?" Hiccup said.
Toothless blew air through his nose and using his teeth, pulled the quilt over Hiccup. Must I do everything for you?
"Thanks, bud," Hiccup murmured, petting Toothless without looking.
Sure, no problem. Toothless went to his stone bed and curled his tail around him.
" 'Night, Toothless," Hiccup smiled.
Toothless rolled his eyes. Just go to sleep, you smitten nut.
Hiccup chuckled quietly, then sighed contently. "Oh, I love her."
Toothless shifted, trying to get comfortable. Yeah, we all knew that.
"She's just. . .she's something else, you know? She's pretty, a great warrior, a great friend. She's even good with babies."
Baby dragons, technically, Toothless groaned, turning over.
"Well, yeah, but I think. . .I think that she'd be a great mom."
Yes, and you'll be a great dad, and I'm sure you guys' kids will be cute. Now can you go to sleep before you stay up all night fantasizing?
Turning on his side, Hiccup squinted at the Night Fury. "Okay, I'll go to sleep, Mom."
That's right, you will.
Hiccup laughed. "Goodnight, Mr. Bossy."
'Night, you dreamy lughead. And the Night Fury hid his face with his tail.
Sighing dreamily, Hiccup stared up at the ceiling again, his eyelids becoming heavy. He had not even noticed how tired he was until now. His vision began to darken as he was gradually and peacefully slipping from consciousness.
"Sweet dreams, Dragonboy," came Astrid's voice from inside his head.
Sighing deeply, Hiccup closed his eyes and was carried off to sleep. He dreamt of him and Astrid sitting together on the cliff of Dragon's Edge, humming For The Dancing and the Dreaming underneath a starry sky.
As always, thank you for reading! I really appreciate it! Love you guys!
P.S. Working on Chapter 3 for Snoggletog on Dragon's Edge, so it should be done fairly soon. :)
