A/N This is my first ever fanfic. Please review. I do not own Grey's Anatomy or its characters.

"Invasive non-small cell with a history of COPD? That guy's pretty much a goner, huh?" Mark whispered to Meredith looking over her shoulder at the computer screen. Meredith turned towards the source of the voice and jumped in his arms.

"Mark! What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to see my best friend who is so busy being an intern, she doesn't have time to talk to me."

They let go briefly and Meredith stood on her toes to give him a peck on the lips.

"Oh Mark. Im glad you're here." Meredith said a hugged Mark tightly. Mark immediately knew something was wrong.

He didn't let go but asked her, "Mer, what's wrong?"

"Everything."

From the glass of a room nearby Derek was watching the exchange utterly confused. He had to do a double take when he saw Meredith kiss Mark Sloan, his best friend with whom his wife cheated.

Meredith let go of Mark and he asked her, "Whose ass do I need to kick?"

Just as Meredith was about to reply, Derek came out of nowhere and punched Mark square on the jaw.

"Derek! What the hell?" Shrieked Meredith.

"That was Mark."

"Yeah, I know his name is Mark, but-" Realisation struck Meredith. "He is your best friend from New York, with whom…"

"Yes. How do you-"

"Dr. Shepherd, my office know. Dr. Grey suture this gentleman and meet us there along with him."

"Sleeping with your best friend's wife? Seriously?" Meredith asked while cleaning the blood from his cheek.

"Judging me, Grey?"

"Just disappointed. You know I won't hold it against you. But I've never seen Derek so pissed."

"I know. Just verifying. Now, what's wrong with you."

"Nothing, just."

"Stop lying to me. I'm hurt. And Derek..?"

"Excuse me?"

"You called him Derek and not Dr. Shepherd. You in the same 'dirty mistresses' boat as me, Grey?" Mark asked Meredith eyeing her intently.

"Yeah.. but.."Mark saw Meredith was going to suture his cut.

"You really think I going to let you do it and leave a scar on my pretty face? Hold the mirror. And but what?" Meredith handed him the supplies and held the mirror at the apt place.

"We got into a relationship and I fell in love with him. He hadn't told me he was married. I had to find out by Addison showing up and point blank asking me if I was the girl screwing her husband."

Meredith said.

"Fuck! Im going to kill Derek."

Just then, the door opened and Patricia, the chief's secretary entered.

"The chief is calling you two."

"The X-ray?" Meredith asked Mark.

"i don't think anything is broken. We can check after meeting the chief."

The both them headed towards Dr. Webber's office. The entered and saw Derek and Addison sitting on one side of the sofa set, Derek nursing his hand with an ice pack.

Soon as entering, Mark headed towards Derek and punched him the same way Derek had had punched him. "That's for not telling Meredith you were married and sleeping with her."

"Mark! You can't just go punching people." Meredith shouted.

"You son of a-"

"Derek, calm down." Addison placated Derek.

"I told you I'll kick the guy's ass who hurt you." Mark said turning towards Meredith.

"Enough. Both of you, take a seat." He said pointing towards Meredith and Mark. They took a seat opposite Derek and Addison.

"Now.. what I know is the history these three share." Said Richard pointing towards Mark, Derek and Addison. "Dr. Grey, who exactly do you know Dr. Sloan here?"

"That's something even I'm dying to know." Derek muttered.

"She saved my life." Mark said.

"When I was studying at Dartmouth, Mark was there once as a guest speaker. That night, we were in a bar on campus."

"As I was leaving, I was about to cross the road, when she jerked me back and prevented me from coming in front of a car whose driver had lost control of it. Though I still got injured, it was only my left leg. She took me to her apartment and tended to me."

"Two days he stayed with me. We talked about everything and anything. We didn't know each other, the other person didn't know anyone in our lives, so were able to talk freely. It was the weekend, so I didn't even have classes. The entire time we spent holed up in my apartment, talking, ordering take out, and Mark being able to heal his leg."

"She took amazing care of me. That time I knew for sure that she would become an amazing doctor."

"He even taught me his famous parallel suturing technique and let me tend to a small wound on his leg."

"Yeah, she was surprisingly good."

"So since then, we kept in touch. Calling each other up to vent, or just simply talk to someone without fear of judgement."

"After the two of them left New York-"

"Because of you." Derek snickered.

"After the two of them left New York, I didn't have a reason to stay. That's why I sent out my resume to all major hospitals in the country. After you made me the offer-"

"You what?!" Derek shouted at Richard.

"Can you stop interrupting me? So.. I knew this was the hospital where Meredith was doing her internship. That's why I came here. I thought it was best to at least have one friend where I lived and worked."

"Really? You expect us to believe that us being here had no sway on your decision?" Derek asked pointing you Addison and himself.

"If you don't remember, the both of you didn't exactly tell me where you were going or when you left for that matter. I had no idea that you guys were here."

"Richard, you're still going to let him work here?" Addison asked.

"It's a legally binding contract. And as much as I want to make a decision as your friend, I am the chief and he is one of the best in the country. Dr. Sloan, I expect you to teach interns as this is a teaching hospital and be totally impartial."

"Great. That's just great." Derek muttered.

"Chief, except Meredith, I'll treat all interns the same. She did save my life, you know."

"No. You're not going to show any partiality or leniency towards me." Meredith jumped in.

"But why?"

"Just. Just like that."

"Really Grey, spit it out."

"I'll tell you later. When I'm not in front of three of my bosses."

"Im gonna be your boss too."

"You're different." Derek felt a pang of jealousy when he heard Meredith say this. He thought she could talk to him about anything.

Just the Addison's pager rang.

"Excuse me everyone, I need to leave, and check on a patient."

"That's fine Addison. Dr. Grey take Dr. Shepherd and suture him up as well. Dr. Sloan, let's sign your contract shall we?"

"Meredith-"

"Hold still." Meredith said cleaning his wound.

"He is a manwho-"

"I know who is, what he is."

"Then why are you being so friendly with him?"

"Because we promised each other to never judge each other. Short of killing someone without any reason, we will never judge each other."

"But-"

"Derek, even if, even if you were boyfriend, which you're not, I wouldn't have broken my friendship with Mark. I'm not going to do that. Ever, for anybody. Now be still and let me stitch your face or your beautiful face will have a permanent scar."

"You think my face is beautiful? Really?" Derek teased.

Meredith laughed. Derek gave her the McDreamy look and smiled. Just as Meredith was about to start suturing Derek's face, the door opened and Mark entered.

"What are you doing here?"

"Did I interrupt something?"

"No you did not." Meredith said.

"Yes. Now can you please leave?" Derek said at the same time.

"I'm here to see Meredith's parallel suturing. Good job Dr. Grey. I'm proud." Mark was indeed proud. He knew since they met at Dartmouth that she was special.

"Thanks." Meredith said smiling.

"Now, why can't I be partial towards you?"

"Mark, not now."

"You can't talk in front of me Meredith?" Derek asked hurt.

"It's just, you're a reason for it." Meredith told Derek guiltily.

"Explain Grey." Mark demanded.

"From the first day of my internship, people knew who my mother is: The Ellis Grey. Soon, Derek's and my relationship also came to light. People started accusing me of sleeping my to the top, nepotism being the cause of my being here and what not. My own friends made snide comments at me for some time. My resident gave me an extremely hard time when she first caught me and Derek."

"Meredith, do you regret-?"

"What, no! It just that I don't want anyone to think that another department head is favouring me due to my personal relations with him. You know how much this hospital loves to gossip."

"I'm sorry." Derek said, understanding how he unintentionally caused problems for her.

"Not your fault." Meredith smiled.

"But you're good. Can't they see that." Mark countered

"They just have an excuse for my excellence, that I get unnecessary credit or the residents and attendings are easy going on me because of who my mother is."

"Screw them then. You are going to be an amazing surgeon. Richard knows that, I know that, and I'm sure Derek will agree with me as well. You don't need to care about what others say. We won't let it affect your career."

"As much as it pains me to say this, I agree with Dr. Sloan."

"Derek please can we-" Mark hoped to talk to his best friend.

"No. I'm being cordial with you for this moment for Meredith's sake. That's it."

Mark rubbed his hand on his face disappointed.

Meredith mouth a small thank you to Derek. She knew he was having a lot of trouble being in the same room as Mark.

Just then, Cristina barged open the door and all four interns entered the room.

"Are you having a threesome with McDreamy and McSteamy?" Asked Izzie excitedly.

"Are you out of your mind?"

"Who punched Dr. Shepherd?" George asked timidly.

"That would be me." Mark smirked.

"Wait.. wait..wait. First things first. Meredith, how do you know McSteamy here?"

"McSteamy?" Mark asked, but was unfortunately as they listened eagerly to Meredith.

"Mark and I met when I was in Dartmouth. He was a guest speaker. While leaving the bar that night, I saved him from coming in front of a car. He injured his leg, I tended to it. We spent two day sin my apartment talking."

"Since then we are best friends, who talk to each other about everything."

"He is your person?" Asked Cristina, slightly disappointed. Very slightly.

"He is. So are you. It's just he is… different"

"Okay.. McSteamy?" Mark asked, wanting the reason behind the nickname.

"You are McSteamy and Derek is McDreamy." Izzie answered.

"But why?"

"Have you looked at yourself?" Cristina answered bluntly.

"Okay" Mark smirked.

"How does McDreamy here know him?" Izzie asked.

"You do realise that I'm your boss." Derek asked bewildered.

"Nah, here you're just McDreamy, outside this room, strictly Dr. Shepherd." Cristina said.

"That's awfully convenient for you." Derek countered.

"You did screw our friend." Alex replied.

"Oh shoot. I need to report to Dr. Burke. But, the two of them need X-rays." Meredith interrupted the conversation.

"We can take them." George offered.

"Uh, no. They'll end up killing each other." Meredith dismissed the idea.

"Dr. Yang, you can help our Dr. Burke, Dr. Grey, stay on my service today."

"No. I cannot be with Dr. Burke today." Derek eyed Yang with confusion but then relented.

"Stevens, with Dr. Burke, who are you with today?"

"Dr. Montgomery- Shepherd."

"Yang, Dr. Montgomery- Shepherd, Dr. Grey with me."

"But, Dr. Bailey assigned them other-" George started, wanting to protect Meredith or not liking Meredith spending time with Derek.

"I'm her boss" Derek stated simply.

"If that's sorted, why did you punch McSteamy?" Cristina asked Derek wanting gossip.

"Were you jealous that Meredith kissed him?" Alex asked smugly.

"No, that is not reason." Derek replied embarrassed.

"Guys, why don't you-"

"Oh hush Meredith. We wanna know." Izzie said

"Spill McDreamy." Cristina demanded.

"He is… he is the guy Addison slept with."

"Oh.." Everyone said together.

"Man, I am so not jealous of your life right now." Cristina told Meredith.

"You think? Now both of you come to the X-ray room. Let's get done with this."

"You what will be fun?" Alex asked. Everyone turned to him. "If just one of you has a broken jaw. That'll be bragging rights for eternity."

"Dr. Karev, you do realise I decide whether or not you scrub in on my surgeries."

"Yeah, well.. just a thought. I'm leaving."

"These are your X-rays. Nothing is broken." Showing Mark and Derek their X-rays.

"Thats good. Who's X-rays are these?" Mark asks pointing to the films displayed on the panel.

"We have a boy with an advance case of craniodiaphyseal dysplaisa."

"Lionitis?"

"Yeah."

"Take me." Mark said excited.

"That is my case and you're not going anywhere near it." Derek said adamantly.

"I can fix the boy's face."

"I said no."

"Derek, you're being reckless." Meredith said, wanting Derek to see the big picture.

"No Meredith, I'm being unreasonable. Not reckless. Reckless is putting your hand inside a body with a bomb in it." Derek countered, still angry about the events taking place since last week.

"What? Grey?" Mark shouted shocked.

"Uh.. Nothing." Meredith said backing into the wall.

In a moment Mark had her trapped between his hands his face inches from hers.

"Tell me, now."

"I know it was stupid, alright. I just.. I don't know why I did that."

"Not good enough, Grey."

Derek was intently seeing the entire exchange. Mark's expressions and reaction when he heard about the bomb, told him exactly how much Meredith meant to him. Yeah, he did punch him for her, but he thought it was just a cover-up for revenge.

"Grey, what are you doing here, I thought I put you on Dr. Burke's service today. And who are you?" Bailey barged in the X-ray room.

"Dr. Mark Sloan, I begin here tomorrow."

"Good to meet you Dr. Sloan, I've heard about your work. Grey, care explaining why Stevens is with Dr. Burke and not you?"

"I told her to go to him, Dr. Bailey. Dr. Yang is with Addison." Derek blurted in the middle, wanting to protect Meredith.

"And since when are you assigning my interns their jobs?" Bailey asked Shepherd irritated.

"Dr. Bailey, as I said I'm new here, the chief asked me to look around, get a lay of the land. Dr. Grey is guiding me. She just got us here for our x-rays. I have asked the chief if I could have Meredith with me and he agreed." Mark butted in and explained.

"If your relationship with my interns so professional as you say why was she trapped to wall with your body on her?"

"It's just that—"

"You know what, I don't care. I see you either of you favouring her over anyone else, I'll make her life hell. Remember that."

"See, this is what I was talking about."

"Meredith, we can overrule her. It won't look good, but if she really treats you badly, we can step-in you know." Mark re- assured her.

Meredith gave him a small smile, but deep down she knew that things were going to change around here and a lot of drama was about to take place.
