Gamebreakers Chapter I: Summoned

What defines a hero?

Strength? Skill? Determination?

What makes someone so different from others, to be considered a "hero"?

Everyone has a different answer. But there's almost always one thing in common with all answers.

Heroes protect. Heroes save. Anyone can be a Hero because they have the capabilities of doing so.

That's what I believe a hero is. A human.

Naofumi Iwatani… is the embodiment of my ideal hero.

In a world where most of the population hates him for something out of his control… Let's see how much change one singular soul can make… upon this little world.

Ryutensei James Henderson-Shock, typically called Ryuuto or Ryu. Aside from the absurdly long name, he was a relatively normal human being… in his world's terms, at least.

While yes, it was true that he was strong enough to topple entire buildings with his own physical strength… in his world, on his Earth, that was a normal thing. Humans evolved, to the point they were a completely different subspecies to what humanity was a long time ago.

October 14th, 2054. It was Ryuuto's 19th birthday today. And like usual, he didn't expect anything.

He lived alone, he always has for as long as he could remember. That wasn't to say his life was bad. Far from it. He had everything he could have asked for. Good friends, good food, a nice place to live, and a great part-time job.

Currently, Ryuuto was taking a walk alone. He was planning to celebrate his birthday with his friends later on in the day, but for now, he decided to just enjoy the sights of his beautiful home, the city of Tokyo.

Ryuuto was an extremely average man, leading an extremely average life. No girlfriends though… in fact he never had one ever. He just chalked it up to how different he looked from other people. After all, normal people don't have snow-white hair with red mixed in. And normal people definitely didn't have red and green eyes.

Ryu sighed to himself. He had lived an uneventful life so far… and it honestly bored him. Peace and quiet didn't settle well with him. For years, he's felt… unsatisfied with life. He felt like there was more for him.

He walked over to the nearby park, noticing the darkening sky. "The party's scheduled to be tonight, huh?" He smiled to himself. "I guess I could be a little selfish and make the others wait… it's my party anyways." He stopped, taking a deep breath of the crisp clean air. "Life's pretty good…"

Ryuuto turned around, only to find himself face to face with a dark cloaked figure, with large black wings that cut into the light like a black hole. He took a step back from the figure, who took a step forward. "Your time is up…" It darkly said, putting a pale and vaguely masculine hand out, where a large black-gray scythe formed.

Ryuuto tried to get away from the figure, running away from it as it chased after him. It raised its scythe, catching up to him quickly as the blade stabbed him in the back.

Ryu's eyes widened, as pain overtook all of his senses. He took a deep staggering breath, looking down at his chest and seeing the exit wound as well as the scythe's blade. He turned to the figure, who pulled down its -his- cloak, allowing him to see a weary-looking man with black hair, black eyes, and pale skin. He seemed to be somewhat regretful. "Forgive me, young one. I always hate to kill someone so young. But your time in this world is up…" Ryuuto watched the scythe as it was pulled out of his body, his vision going black. "...You better have some good reasoning for choosing this young man to die, Nephew." Was the last thing he heard before the world went entirely dark.

|2|

The term 'sweet release of Death' was… somewhat, mostly true. Death was kind. He didn't like suffering. He didn't like causing pain. He didn't like his job.

But he knew it was necessary. What he hated, however, was taking someone's soul before their time. At least this time, his Nephew only wanted to send the soul to a different plane of reality instead of the Afterlife.

Normally, he wouldn't accept the idea of killing a soul prematurely. But this was a different case, considering the soul in question belonged to his Nephew anyways. When it came to the Alpha Fragments, he couldn't kill them without permission from his Nephew. As they were his creations, effectively immortal until his Nephew said otherwise.

Normally, he couldn't reincarnate souls. But this time he had permission from his sister Life, along with his Nephew to do so. And so the reincarnation went on. The soul was sent, meaning it was now time for it to awaken… as the Fifth Cardinal Hero, if memory served correct about this mini-Multiverse.

Things were finally out of his hands, and the boy's fate was now his own.

...Being dead didn't last long, apparently. The moment Ryuuto felt his eyes close, the moment he felt his heart stop, he was shocked to feel his heart beating again. The pain of his wound was gone. He would have cheered, he would have been happy to have 'survived'…

Only thing was, he had a new problem aside from momentary death. He felt like he was falling to his death, and he couldn't open his eyes. Before he could scream from the very uncomfortable feeling, he immediately felt the feeling of hitting a cold hard surface.

He immediately got up, opening his eyes, wildly looking around and checking his body for his injury… which was gone. Not closed up, just gone. Like it was never there. That should be impossible though. Even back in his old world, wounds never healed that well. He was brought out of his thoughts when he heard someone speak. "Fantastic! The Summoning was a success! Great Heroes, won't you save our world from great evil?"

'What the Hell?' He thought to himself, before noticing the strange sword in his hand. It was silver in color, with a dark purple jewel wedged into the hilt. If Ryuuto's memory served him well, this specific sword was a modified version of a European double-edged one-handed sword.

"Is this for real?" Ryuuto looked up from his sword when he heard someone else speak, seeing it was the dark-haired man next to him. He looked around his age, if not just a bit older.

"What do you mean its in need of saving?" The young blonde teen farthest away from him asked, after testing the draw of his bow.

"The story behind it all is long and complicated, but suffice to say that you are all the Five Cardinal Heroes, and you were Summoned here using an ancient ritual." The priest-like man before them answered. "Our world is on the brink of destruction, you see, and we plead you for your assistance O' Heroes!"

'Okay, so this is generic Anime plot #9, Supernatural Isekai. Great… I die, and this is what happens? No Heaven? No Hell? Fuck it, I'd take infinite darkness at this point instead of this cliche!' Ryuuto hissed internally.

"Oh, I didn't think that's what you'd think. I guess there had to be one of you that was different." Ryuuto heard in his head, causing him to take a step back. The priest looked at him, somewhat concerned.

"Um… Sir Hero, are you alright?" He asked, causing Ryuuto to sigh.

"Yeah, I'm fine." Blatant lies. "Just… trying to adjust." He nervously laughed, as the man nodded in understanding before he continued.

"We beg of you, O' Brave Heroes! Save us from this cruel fate!" Ryuuto was about to respond in kind, but he was stopped by the voices of his fellow "Heroes".

"Forget it." The other Sword wielder said.

"I also refuse." The blonde Bow Hero agreed with the black-haired youth.

"You can send us back to our homeworld, right? Do that and maybe we'll talk." The Spear 'Hero' arrogantly said.

"You brought the five of us here without our consent. Don't you even feel the slightest bit guilty about it?" The black-haired Sword 'Hero' said, raising his blade.

"Not to mention, if you throw us out as soon as we restore peace, we'd have done all that hard work for nothing!"

"How willing are you to accommodate our requests?" The blonde Spear 'Hero' asked. "Depending on your answer, we might end up as your enemies instead of your allies."

'Jesus Christ, these guys are insane! They're acting like they are Isekai protagonists or… video game players…' Ryu's eyes widened ever so slightly, as he heard the voice in his head chuckled.

"Oh, I knew I liked you. Already figuring it out? Yep, these guys think this is just a game they're playing. Idiotic, really." Ryuuto was about to speak up to the Voice, but it interrupted him. "Alright kiddo, I recommend you listen to this guy so you don't miss out on crucial information."

"Good sirs, before I say anymore, I'd like for you to have an audience with the King of Melromarc." The man walked forward, trying to pacify the heroes with his words and a gentle look on his face, but a slightly fearful look in his eyes. "You can negotiate your rewards with him directly!"

That seemed to work, as the Sword Hero put his blade down. "Fine."

"I suppose we'll consider their offer!" Bow.

"Doesn't matter who we talk to, our demands won't change!" Spear.

Ryuuto glanced at the final Hero next to him, noticing the Shield on his arm. The Shield Hero then? As the two locked eyes, Ryuuto instantly understood what the man was thinking. They both thought of their fellow "Heroes" as narcissistic and demanding.

Ryuuto was led through the stone halls and stairway, looking out at the medieval-looking city around him. While he was shocked that he was literally in a different world from his own, he still couldn't understand why. Sure, he was summoned, but why him? Surely there were other people in the universe that died aside from him that day. His thoughts plagued him the entire journey until they reached the King's Palace.

"So, you five men are the Five Cardinal Heroes of legend?" The gray-haired King spoke with firm authority in his voice. "I am King Aultcray Melromarc the Thirty-Second, King of the fair country of Melromarc. Welcome, brave heroes. Please, identify yourselves."

The black-haired youth with the Sword stepped forward first. "Amaki Ren, sixteen-years-old, highschooler."

Then, the Spear. "I'm Kitamura Motoyasu, a college student, and twenty-one years of age."

Next, the young blonde. "Kawasumi Itsuki, seventeen-years-old, highschooler."

Finally, it was the Shield's turn. "My name is Iwatani Naofumi. I'm twenty, and a college student."

The King finally and quickly looked over to Ryuuto, who walked forward holding his sword tightly. "By formality, my name is Shock-Henderson Ryutensei. But please, just call me Ryuuto." Ryu left out his middle name since it didn't translate well, if at all when using the typical Japanese greeting. "I'm nineteen-years-old."

"You didn't mention where you are education-wise right now." The Voice then gasped. "Did you drop out of high school or something?" Ryu ignored the Voice in his head.

"Right… Now then, I suppose I need to explain why we brought you here. My beloved country of Melromarc and the entire world surrounding it are heading down a path of certain ruin."

The King then went on into a long explanation about an Apocalyptic Prophecy, something called the Waves, and why they had to summon them. Apparently they barely survived the last Wave and needed their help to survive the next, stronger Wave. And that they only had a month to prepare for it.

'Now I can understand why 'Idiot Heroes Three' think this is a game. This literally is an overcomplicated game backstory with the Apocalypse Cliche.' Ryu deadpanned internally.

"Okay, I think I get the gist of it," Ren said whilst clashing his sword against the floor. What the hell was that about anyway? "Though you don't expect us to save you all for free, right?'

The advisor near King Aultcray smiled. "Of course not. Once you've repelled all the waves, we shall reward you most handsomely."

Motoyasu smiled faintly. "Yeah? Well, it would seem we have no choice but to take your word for it."

Ryuuto lost the brightness in his eyes as he began to lose faith in humanity just because of these arrogant 'Heroes'.

"Now that we have entered an agreeable arrangement, I'd like to ask you, brave Heroes, to check your statuses." The King said, causing Ryuuto to blink in confusion. It seemed he wasn't the only one, as the other heroes seemed just as clueless.

"Wait, what's that?" Naofumi asked the King.

Itsuki agreed. "Um, yeah…"

Ren sighed. "Are you all dense? It should have been the first thing you all noticed when you first got here. Don't you see the icon in the lower right corner of your vision?"

"Eh?" Ryuuto looked and saw a purple icon with three dots just at the corner of his sight. He instinctively focused on it, and a screen popped up before him.

SPD: 36

Equipment: Legendary Shifter Sword ("Neo-Imperius", Locked), Otherworldly Clothes

Special Skills: Primal Magic (Disabled, Requires Level 25), Ancient Magic (Disabled, Requires Level 30), Alestian Aura (Disabled, Activatable)

'None of this made sense. Why was he this strong? Especially for a Level One?' Ryu thought. 'Wait, what is this Aura thing that's disabled… and how do I enable it?'

Another screen popped up before him.

Notice: Special Skill "Alestian Aura" allows for the user to have, in theory, a second Mana pool. It also provides extra protection of +5 DEF for your first 7 levels, and later allows other skills to be awakened. Activate "Alestian Aura"?

'Um… sure.'

Special Skill: Alestian Aura unlocked (Level One). DEF raised to 18.

Alright, aside from the other abilities that were locked behind Levels, his stats were pretty good. Ryu didn't understand the difference between XP and EXP, or Levels and LV, but it didn't matter. His SP stat was ridiculously high though. He didn't know why.

Like that, another screen popped up to explain.

Notice: Special Skill "Alestian Aura" allows for the possessor to have higher SP than normal humans. To make up for this great power, SP gains from levelling have been restricted.

Okay… what does Shifter mean though?

Notice: The Shifter Class Hero is a special Class of Hero, chosen by the Divines of the universe. It is said that they would be the Chosen of the Goddess of Life. The Shifter Class allows the user to change weapons and elements with specific requirements.

That was quick. Was this System sentient or something?

Notice: Yes, I am. But for the purposes of the 'Game', I am not allowed to speak to you outside of answering questions.

Interesting. So while this was a real-world, it was still a 'Game' when it came to its magic, with gamelike stats. That was cool, sorta.

"What is all this exactly?" Naofumi asked.

"Its called Status Magic, an ability exclusive to the Five Heroes." The King's advisor explained.

"Alright, so where do we go? What's the first step?" Ren asked.

"You must set out on an adventure, to develop and upgrade these Legendary Weapons." The Advisor answered.

"You mean these weren't already maxed out when we got them? Also, mine's not even technically a weapon…" Naofumi complained slightly.

Motoyasu put out his spear. "Can't we just wield other weapons until these are usable?"

"I suppose we'll have to figure that out as we go. Regardless, we have a lot of training ahead of us." Ren said.

"We'll have to level up hard and fast."

"And then whenever we feel like we're ready, we can form a party and-"

"One moment, brave Heroes." The five looked up at the advisor. "I have neglected to mention. You must recruit allies and adventure separately."

"And why is that?" Itsuki asked. A notice appeared in front of Ryuuto the moment the blonde asked that.

Notice: The Legendary Weapons cannot function properly in close proximity to each other for extended periods of time. It is strongly suggested to adventure separately to avoid wasted potential and consequences.

'Wait, what kind of consequences?' Ryu thought to himself.

Notice: XP deduction for kills, increasing with each Hero on a 'Party'. All Five Heroes working together would effectively mean zero XP gain and zero Level ups. (-20% XP per Hero)

That wasn't so good. That meant he'd have to play solo. He wasn't sure how to act in a world with other people, especially ones not necessarily human on his terms.

"Since the sun is about to set, rest here for tonight and begin your quests tomorrow. In the meantime, we'll gather the best of the best for your Parties." The moment the King finished, a rather beautiful brunette woman in a flowing dress approached the Heroes.

"We have quarters prepared for you all. Please sirs, right this way."

After a bit, the five were led to their room, with five readied beds. It was considerably large, larger than Ryuuto's apartment for sure, with a table and chairs for them to sit and talk among themselves. It didn't take much for Ryu to realize they were being treated like nobles.

"I guess when you're heroes of legend, you get special treatment." Motoyasu grinned from the bed he sat on. "The girl who showed us here was cute too!"

"And though it tasted unusual, the food was quite sumptuous," Itsuki said.

"Doesn't this feel like a video game?" Naofumi said from the couch he was on.

"That's because it is a video game." Motoyasu laughed slightly. "It's exactly like Emerald Online."

"Um… never heard of it," Naofumi admitted, causing Motoyasu to lose his grin as confusion set in.

"Wait, seriously? It's huge!" He looked at Ryu for confirmation, but all he could do was shrug. He was as clueless as Naofumi.

Itsuki shook his head. "What are you talking about? This isn't an online game! This is exactly like Dimension Wave, which is a console game!"

"A console? How outdated is your hardware?" Ren said, crossing his arms. "Everybody plays VRMMO's these days, and this world is identical to Brave Star Online."

Motoyasu sighed as he got up, leaning on his Legendary Spear. "Let's sort this out. First off, Ren. Do you mean an actual VRMMO?" At Ren's positive answer, Motoyasu looked at his fellow heroes. "You guys get what he means by that too, right?"

"A sci-fi game I'm familiar with explored the concept," Itsuki answered.

"Read about them in Light Novels," Naofumi replied, as Motoyasu finally looked at the final Hero.

"Yeah, I'm familiar with the idea. It was a work-in-progress project for big companies back home." Ryuuto honestly said. Motoyasu hummed.

"Now to be sure, let's trade general knowledge. Whose face is on the 1,000 Yen bill?" Immediately the Four Heroes aside from Ryu gave conflicting answers, with them looking to the white-red haired young adult for his answer.

"Itō Hirobumi." He sighed out. That only seemed to confuse the Heroes further, as they began to question each other intensely. After a while, they all gave up and sat down.

"Only one explanation." Itsuki sighed, sitting back down in his chair. "We're all from different versions of Japan."

"Right, and they don't sound alike at all," Ren replied.

"So, parallel worlds with parallel Japans, huh?" Naofumi mulled over this for a bit, sitting back down on his red couch.

"I was thinking we could be from different eras, but it would seem not, huh?" Motoyasu said.

"This is dumb. You guys seem to be familiar with this world, but I'm not getting any vibes of familiarity from this place." Ryu sighed, collapsing onto his bed.

"Same here, what's up with that?" Naofumi said, causing what Ryu now called the Three Cocky 'Heroes' to look at the Shield Hero with pity.

"Oh, its nothing. I just assumed it was because you're the Shield Hero. But I wonder why Ryu doesn't know anything about this place?"

"I'm barely getting along with the help of the Notice System," Ryu admitted, going through the Help section. Naofumi, however, wasn't so calm.

"Wait, what do you mean? Is there something wrong with the Shield?" The green-eyed man asked.

"Calm down. As the oldest one here, let me bring you up to speed on the basics." Motoyasu walked over to Naofumi. "As far as I've seen, the Shielder Class… that specializes in the Shield?" Naofumi nodded, listening intently.

Motoyasu got into Naofumi's face. "Is for losers because true gamers never play it." Naofumi blinked, before stepping back and exclaiming 'No!'

"How about in your worlds?" Naofumi asked the Bow and Sword heroes, to which they replied about the same. The Shield was considered low-tier in their games. Ryu, at this point, was feeling tired. After all, the stress of dying just earlier that a while ago caught up to him. Before he fell asleep though, he had one thought. 'This life… it doesn't seem too bad. While I wouldn't have chosen this job if I had a choice, being a Hero… it's not as bad as it could be. I'll just have to deal with my new chance at life as is.'

"Right this way." A maid instructed the Five as they were led back to the throne room, with numerous nobles watching them from above. The first thing Ryuuto could sense, or rather see, was that there was something off with how the people were treating Naofumi compared to the others and him.

There were a few noblewomen that he could see looking at him and the other Heroes with desire, but also people looking at Naofumi with disdain. He could only see this going bad for Naofumi… which made him worried. The Shield Hero apparently needed assistance to actually do anything damage-wise so he could farm XP, especially with that ATK stat of 1.

The Five Heroes bowed before the King of Melromarc, as he announced that he had found them the best adventurers in the land. Ryu looked around but found no one truly worthy of working with him. He wasn't being arrogant whatsoever, but he could just tell that most people here were either not going to work well with his combat style or just going to get in his general way.

"Honorable heroes, we have found the best warriors in the land to fight alongside you." The King said, as said adventurers began to line up. "Our future champions, your journey begins now!" Immediately, the warriors walked forward and lined up behind their chosen Heroes.

Ryuuto noticed the lack of people in Naofumi's party immediately, along with his own. He wasn't too broken up about it, in fact, he was more than happy to fight alone. But he was concerned about Naofumi, due to his lack of attack power. "Lord Aultcray, what's with the lack of party members for Naofumi and me?"

"I loathe to admit it, but I didn't expect this…" The King sighed. "There is, however, a rumor going around."

"Rumor? What do you mean?" Naofumi asked immediately.

"The rumor is that the Shield Hero and the Shifter Hero are ignorant of this world." At that, Ryu tensed up ever so slightly. How did that happen? No one should know of the conversation they had last night. Unless…. Someone was listening in.

Naofumi turned to the Sword Hero. "You don't need five Ren! How about you give some to me?"

"You're right, I don't need them." Ren turned to his party. "Whoever can't keep up will be left in the dust." The adventurers, however, got closer to Ren. Naofumi then turned to Motoyasu.

"Dude, help me out! Don't you think this is unfair?"

"Uh, yeah. I'm surprised all my party's all-girls too." Ryuuto's opinion of Motoyasu immediately dropped. A skirt chaser, huh? He'd avoid associating with him.

"It might seem fair if we split them up evenly, but that might break morale," Itsuki said softly.

'This feels somewhat staged. Why would people avoid Naofumi like this? He seems to be a good guy!' Ryu frustratedly thought. He was broken out of his thoughts when a green-eyed redhead requested to join the Shield Hero's party, leaving Motoyasu's.

Ryuuto watched the new duo warily, as the King then spoke up. "Now that this has been dealt with, Master Ryuuto may recruit members for his party on his own terms. The funds will now be distributed."

Five servants then walked out, carrying pouches of what Ryuuto assumed to be money. "Each month, each Hero will be given funds to support them. This month, however, Ryuuto and the Shield Hero shall have greater funds to make up for their lack of party members. Motoyasu, Itsuki, and Ren shall receive 500 silver coins. The Shield Hero shall receive 800, and Ryuuto shall receive 900."

'He's now avoiding Naofumi's name in its entirety. There's definitely a stigma here.' Ryuuto thought, eyes narrowing slightly. He took the money with a smile, however.

"Procure all necessary equipment and set forth!" The King said, as the Five Heroes then went off to start their journeys. Ryuuto walked over to Naofumi and his redhead companion.

"Hey Naofumi, do you mind if I accompany you for now?" Ryuuto asked, putting his Legendary Weapon away in a sheath on his back.

The Shielder nodded with a small smile on his face, turning to his companion. "Hey Myne, have any recommendations for a weapon shop?"

The redheaded girl, Myne, nodded with a smile. "I know a good shop, they'll have everything you two Heroes need! Follow me!"

The duo and the tagalong Hero finally arrived at their destination, Erhard's weapon shop. Ryuuto stared at the sign, finding he couldn't read the sign, which was very annoying. They walked in, as Ryuuto looked around for a bit.

"Welcome, good sirs." Ryuuto heard, turning around and seeing a middle-aged, slightly scarred and bald man greet them as he walked over to what Ryuuto assumed to be the 'receptionist's desk'. "Never seen you two before, who are you two?"

"These two are the Shield and Shifter heroes!" Myne introduced them both, causing Erhard to blink before grinning.

"Two of the Legendary Heroes in my shop? At the same time, at that?" He laughed boisterously. "My humble little shop's getting popular by the second! Well, as long as you two have the money for it, take anything and everything you need Heroes!"

At that, Ryuuto smirked. With the extra cash he had, especially since he was going solo, he could definitely get some good armor. He took note of how the swords Naofumi picked up caused him to be shocked until he dropped the blades. What was that about?

Warning: Legendary Heroes are not allowed to use weapons aside from their Legendary Weapons.

Well, that was fine in his case, since he was supposedly able to change weapon types with his Legendary Weapon (...somehow), but for Naofumi it seemed like it was a big disadvantage. He couldn't provide actual offense at all and would have to rely on others. As he waited for Naofumi to finish his shopping, he thought about his information-gathering last night.

Apparently one of many ways he could increase his Weapon's strength was absorbing various items. He'd see what he could purchase soon. Once Naofumi and Myne left, with him waving goodbye to the duo, he walked over to Erhard. "Alright, Erhard, let's get to work."

After a day of farming up XP and reaching Level 4 (who knew killing Balloons was going to be something he'd be doing ever), Ryuuto decided to buy a night at a nearby Inn. As he sat down on his bed, he looked over his Legendary Shifter Sword, Neo-Imperius, and all the new weapons he unlocked over the day.

Orange Balloon Sword

Blue Balloon Sword

Red Balloon Sword

Yellow Balloon Sword

Copper Dagger

Silver Dagger

Magic Steel Rapier

Yep, today was a good day farming-wise… He then noticed there was a separate tab on his Unlocked Weapons section, labeled Primal Weapons. He hesitantly tapped the tab, showing him a new panel of weapons.
