Figuring It Out

Chapter 6:

A Forgotten Past

It's a day after Jewel finally got her chance to be free, and also the day after Blu learnt to fly. Jewel slept peacefully that night and so did Blu. Jewel woke up before Blu since he was still adjusting to the new timezone. Jewel really wanted to go out for a morning flight but she also really wanted to go with Blu. Jewel thought he still couldn't fly up so she thought she would have to fly him to the top of a tree and she could glide with him down.

So she waited by the stream that runs through the aviary near their hollows. It was peaceful, she never really appreciated how peaceful this aviary was until she was allowed to leave it at will. She laid there against the rock and just listened to the water.

About an hour later Blu finally woke up, he walked out of his hollow and glided towards Jewel, he landed next to her and greeted her "Goodmorning" Jewel replied with the same.

"Hey Blu, I was wondering if you would like me to fly you up to the top of a tree outside, since you can't fly up yet, we could glide around the Jungle. How does that sound?" Jewel asked as she got up and walked towards Blu as he had a drink out of the stream.

"Oh, you don't need to fly me up. While you were flying outside yesterday, I spent the whole time practicing and now I can fly up." Blu explained as he got his wings ready and flew up to a branch that was above both of their hollows. Jewel was amazed that when they first met he couldn't even go near a ledge without panicking, now he was flying.

"Oh my god, Blu, That's great!. I knew you could do it." Jewel enthusiastically said as she flew up next to him.

"Yeah, and I couldn't have done it without you." Blu thanked her for her support, Jewel was happy to have helped. Because of her, now they could have their first fly together

"Well, now that you can fly, how about we go for a fly. Me and you." Jewel offered Blu as she flew a short distance to the branch next to their new exit.

Blu couldn't say no to an offer like that, so he joined her. He flew to the exit and landed next to her, Jewel opened the exit door and flew to the perch that was outside the exit.

"Are you ready?" Jewel asked as she playfully nudged him on the side of his wing. Blu felt a little scared since it was going to be his first time flying out in a real jungle.

"Oh, I- umm." Blu stuttered out as he looked out into the dense jungle.

"Yeah… yeah, I am" Blu finally fully gained the confidence after about 10 seconds of thinking. Jewel was excited and took off, telling him to follow her.

Blu flapped his wings and flew after her so he could catch up. Blu watched her do flips around him and show off her skill.

"Show off!" Blu jokingly yelled out at Jewel, causing Jewel to chuckle a bit. Jewel stopped doing tricks and calmly flew next to him.

"Don't worry, you'll be doing those eventually." Jewel laughed out while reassuring him that he would eventually learn. Blu wanted to be able to do what she could but knew it was way too difficult at his level of flying skills to do.

They flew around the jungle for about an hour before they got tired and decided to look for a nice area to land. They were in a location in the jungle that seemed to be completely deserted so they assumed they could just land anywhere.

They found a hollow that had an amazing view of the jungle, the hollow was right in the center of the tree. They landed there to take a breather.

"Oh… God… I ca- cant breath" Blu panted out from exhaustion.

"Blu, I told you to not continuously flap your wings while flying, it drains too much of your energy. Just let yourself glide." Jewel explained to Blu as he panted.

"Wow, look at this view!" Jewel said while admiring the beauty of the view. Blu finally had caught his breath and took a look.

But for him, something was familiar. He didn't know why but something in his mind told him to fly to the bottom of the tree, so he did exactly that. Jewel was curious as to why he suddenly did this, so she followed him. She found Blu examining the ground and then looking up again while panning his back around, as if he was scanning for something.

"Blu? Is everything okay?" Jewel asked, she was now concerned since she had never seen this behaviour from anyone she knew, but she also knew Blu was a bit special when it came to behavior.

Blu rubbed his eyes hoping to be able to get a better look as they were a bit watery from all the flying. But once he opened them, there was a cage around him. Blu flinched quite a bit from that and blinked. But when he opened his eyes from the blink it was all gone.

Jewel was really concerned since he hadn't spoked or anything since he flew down here.

"Blu?" Jewel said, trying to get his attention back. Blu snapped out of his thoughts and turned to Jewel.

"Blu, are you okay?" Jewel asked, moving a little closer to him.

"Uhh, I don't know. This place seems… familiar." Blu explained to her as best he could. He didn't want to go into full details just yet until he fully understood what was happening. He flew back up to the hollow and looked around.

He found a hatched eggshell and there were some small blue feathers in the small nest inside of the hollow. He went over to it and picked it up with his talon. It was a Blue Spix Macaws feather. Same colour as his but it seemed. Old, really old. As if it had been there for a long time. The wind didn't move it because it was lodged into the nest and took a bit of a tug to get out.

Jewel flew up towards him and landed at the hollow entrance. "What's so familiar to you?" Jewel asked as she looked around for any clues as to what Blu was talking about.

Blu turned around and showed her the old Spix Macaw chick feather. Blu for some reason had this song in his head but couldn't remember any of the lyrics. Only the tune. He hummed some of it as he looked around.

Blu suddenly felt scared and uncomfortable of where they were.

"Jewel, can we go?" Blu asked, looking a little fearful. Jewel noticed him and agreed to leave that area.

But as Blu was flying through back the way he came, he suddenly was caught in a net and fell straight to the dirt ground. He called Jewel for help but she wasn't fast enough to get to him before he hit the ground hard. He yelled in pain as he hit and ground and kept yelling "Get me out!" over and over again. "Get me out of this net!" Blu yelled

Jewel landed next to him and started shaking him. "Blu! You're okay! You're not in a net!" Jewel yelled as she shook him. Blu finally snapped back to reality.

"Wait, what happened to the ne- ow!" Blu was cut off by a pain on his back, gladly he landed on some grass and that absorbed most of the impact, but it was a bad enough hit that it caused him lots of pain.

"Blu it's ok, it's happened many times when I was learning to fly, it won't last long." Jewel reassured Blu as she helped him up. But obviously Jewel had never suddenly stopped flying randomly in mid flight. The only ways she fell were from not knowing what to do yet or not turning correctly.

"Ow! Wha- what happened." Blu asked as he rubbed his head.

"Well, you suddenly stopped flying and just started falling." Jewel explained. She was now worried about what Blu was going through. This area just seemed to bring back bad memories of something that happened a while back in his life.

"I- I was in a net, then suddenly I- I wasn't." Blu explained what he saw. Jewel thinks he was going through something she was going through when she was in the aviary with Blu a couple weeks ago.

"L-lets go Jewel, I think I would just like to rest for the rest of the day. Can we go back?" Blu asked, Jewel agreed since she could tell Blu was having a really bad time at the moment.

As they were flying back Blu just couldn't stop trying to figure out what the hell just happened. He got so caught up on thinking that he nearly hit 10 trees on the way back. Jewel knew he was new to flying but he wasn't that bad at it.

Once they finally arrived back at the aviary, Jewel decided to ask what that was all about. "Blu?" Jewel said, trying to gain the attention of Blu. But he was still too deep in thought.

"Blu!" she raised her voice a bit, not by much. But it was enough to snap him back to reality.

"Huh, what? I- uhh. Nothing?" Blu panicked that out in a fright with a slight jump. He looked towards her eyes and tried his best to listen in without going back to the train of thought he had before.

"Blu, are you okay? Your acting stranger than normal." Jewel asked Blu while looking into his eyes. Blu looked down and fell to silence as if he was trying to hide what happened.

"Blu, please answer me. You can be honest with me." Jewel said as she moved a little closer to him. Blu just continued to look down at the ground. Until he felt Jewels wing on his shoulder. He looked back up.

"I- I… uhhh- I don't kn- know… I'm still trying to figure it out." Blu stuttered out as he glanced at Jewel and back to the ground randomly.

"Well, once you do. You know who to talk to. Okay?" Jewel said as she walked backwards to the entrance while keeping eye contact on Blu. Once she finished saying that she went inside. Leaving Blu still outside the entrance.

Blu turned to look at the jungle then back towards the entrance 2 times until he finally went inside.

Tulio was just in time to bring them their food because as soon as Blu got back in he called for Blu and Jewel to get their food.

Blu flew towards the food and just stared at it. Jewel came to the food shortly after Blu got there and then started eating slowly. Savouring the taste. But after awhile she noticed he had not eaten anything. That wasn't like Blu, well it didn't seem like him since everyday Blu was a fairly fast eater, always finishing before her.

"Blu, you haven't even touched your food, are you okay." Jewel asked, looking at him. But this time he didn't react so easily and he sort of snapped.

"I don't know, okay! You told me to talk about it when I figure it out. I haven't figured it out so just stop asking!" Blu snapped and flew to his hollow, leaving Jewel in a shock. 'Wow, didn't know he had that in him. But that's not like him, he's usually so kind and gentle with his words and tone.' Jewel thought looking at the entrance of Blu's hollow aster he had entered it.

'Maybe I should give him some time to himself.' Jewel thought as she got up and flew to her hollow, but something stopped her from going inside because from below hers she heard quiet sobbing from Blu.

'But it also sounds like he really needs someone right now' Jewel thought as she listened in. She decided to just wing it and go down towards him.

Once she got down to the entrance of his hollow she saw him balled up in the corner of his hollow leaning against the interior wood.

"Why can't I just figure things out" she heard Blu repeat that to himself over and over again.

"Blu?" Jewel quietly called out in a soothing tone. Blu slowly turned his head up to see her. But put his head back into his wings again.

"Hey, Blu it's okay. I understand how this would be a very hard thing to process right now." Jewel said as she walked to Blu and sat next to him and put her wing around him.

"I'm sorry I yelled at you. It's just that… I don't know what's going on." Blu said as he leaned onto Jewels shoulder.

"Hey, it's okay. We'll figure this out together. Right?" Jewel said as she looked at him. Blu remembered that those words were the same ones she said in the cargo plane before Nigel tackled him to the ground.

"Thank you, Jewel. I know we will." Blu said as he wiped tears off his face and sniffed.

"Blu, just know that we are both still figuring it out. And I don't think we will ever stop trying to figure it out. But as long as we do it together. It will be easier too. Right?" Jewel said, comforting him. Blu couldn't believe how comforting she was. He had been comforting her so much that she never got the chance too until now.

"Well… I know I have figured out one thing." Blu said as he sat up and looked at her turquoise eyes.

"What would that be, Blu?" Jewel asked as she looked back into his eyes.

"This" Blu said before he pushed his beak into hers. Jewel went wide eyed for a bit, but after 2 seconds kissed back. The kiss lasted 20 seconds. She leaned back and Blu leaned over her without breaking the kiss. Once the kiss ended Blu just stared at her wide eyed. He couldn't believe what he just did, and neither could Jewel.

"I'm, uhhh. Sorry I just did th-" Blu was cut off by Jewel pulling his head in to kiss him again. The two were making out for hours that night. Blu had completely forgetten about his troubles and was completely focused on the moment.

In that moment of heat. He felt like he had finally figured it out. But, unfortunately he was still
