Mortals

Mark Torres

Today was the day I'd ask out my long-term crush Annabeth Chase. I had known her for 3 years. Longer than anyone at this school. It wasn't like I was hideous, so at least maybe I had a chance with her. I was smart, straight A's, and her parents seemed to like me. I knew I stood a better chance than the playboys of the school. All they did was go on a few dates a girl for a few days, get in her pants, then break up with them and move on to the next girl.

"Hey, Annabeth!"

"Oh, hi Mark,"

"Hey, Mark!,"

"Chris, what's up?"

"Marky"

I sighed. "Hey, Jenny,"

We had all been friends for a long while, but out of all of us, I still knew Annabeth the longest.

Annabeth Chase was my first crush. From the first day of school, I knew we should be together. We were both smart and didn't go to parties all the time like some kids. Since 6th grade, I had been in love with her. But enter the second semester, she became more distant. In the 9th grade, there was a time when she didn't come back to school for a while. She said some vague thing about a 'Percy', but I didn't think twice about it. We were going over to her house that day, and I knew it wouldn't help me much if I was stuck in the past.

At Annabeth's house

We were playing truth or dare at Annabeth's house. She lived in a really big penthouse. She said she shared the space, but we had never seen anyone else in her house.

"So Annabeth," Chris started, "Do you like anyone from school?" I knew he was asking for me. He was the only one who knew I had a crush on her.

"No."

My heart broke. "So you can't see yourself with anyone from our school?"

"Nope. Jenny, your turn. Truth, or dare?"

"Truth."

"Who's your crush."

"None of your business,"

"That's not how the game works."

"Dare then."

"I dare you to go to school wearing high heels all week."

"Fine. Mark, truth, or dare?"

"Do you have a crush from anyone at school?" I blushed. "Yes,"

"Cool,"

The game continued as normal, but I couldn't get what Annabeth had said out of my head. She didn't see herself with anyone. True, we were only in 9th grade, but I'd hoped maybe she liked a little. I supposed it was fine. Maybe we just needed to spend more time together. The rest of the game went smoothly, but I couldn't get what Annabeth had said out of my mind. She couldn't see herself with anyone from school. That, unfortunately, included me. It wasn't like I was butt ugly. My shaggy brown hair was manageable, and my brown eyes were a little dull but I was still pretty good looking. I thought maybe when we were older, we'd get together. I was wrong.

Yes, I know. Everyone makes stories like this. Mortal likes Annabeth searches for Percy Jackson on the internet, try to break them up, we've all read those stories. But mine will be a little bit different. There was always a certain type of story I would look for, but never find it. So I'm writing this for others trying to find stories like mine will become. Also, can anyone see if they can solve that math problem? Because I sure can't.

Yo, this has been edited. Some of the comments might not make sense because of this.
