Baby Fever

She had witnessed so many births in her life, especially since she began her career as a midwife. Her love for babies was evident since she was a little girl and while it was extremely stereotypical of her, Marron always dreamed of motherhood. When she was eight she witnessed her best friend's little sister come into the world. The following year, she witnessed the birth of her other best friend's niece. Despite being only a child at the time of these births, she was determined to help the mothers bring their children into the world, whether it be bringing ice chips or fetching miscellaneous things.

Marron's helpfulness didn't stop in the delivery room, the girl was also always eager to babysit. A normal child her age, like Trunks or Goten, wouldn't have been interested in seeing childbirth with all of its guts and glory or willingly participate in childcare, however, Marron thought childbirth and childrearing was a magically beautiful experience. Fast forward almost a decade later and Marron would find out that there was nothing magical about your who-ha stretching ten centimeters to push a baby out but instead, the true definition of pain.

Her uterus began to unyieldingly cramp and lower sharp back pain followed shortly after. She cursed herself for all the times she thought one of her patients was overreacting while in labor. This pain was more than justifiable for screaming bloody murder. She hissed and grabbed onto the edge of her birth bathtub with gorilla grip. As her fingers turned red, Marron clenched her eyes shut and began her mindful breathing as she tried not to think of the pain she was enduring.

"Another one?" she heard her boyfriend ask, which made her want to slap him for his ignorance. Of course, she didn't though, she knew he was trying to be helpful so she gave him a head nod in response to his question before desperately extending her arm out, signaling him that she needed her hand to be comforted. Dad-to-be hurriedly obliged and planted soft kisses on her forehead in hopes of relaxing her. He could tell she was tired and weak from the nine hours of being in labor. This apparently was pretty normal from what his girlfriend had informed him since this was her first time. Trunks felt terrible that Marron was only able to sleep for only a few hours. As her labor progressed she found herself in too much pain to sleep. Which sadly meant that he wasn't able to sleep.

Trunks was having a hard time seeing his girlfriend enduring an insufferable amount of pain. The worst part of it all was that he could do nothing to stop it instead the only remedy he could offer was comfort. Trunks and Goten would tag-team getting Marron whatever she wanted. At one point during her early labor, Goten flew across the world to get her a milkshake from her favorite diner in a different country. Despite all this, Trunks wished there was more he could do to alleviate her physical pain.

As she felt her contraction go away, she looked over at Trunks. She quickly picked up on his worrisome. She knew this perturbing face all too well from her career, especially when labor has gone one for hours. Usually, they never say anything considering that their pain is only emotion and their partners are physical. Nevertheless, during these times Marron always offered the other parent words of support and reassurance. "Hey, I know I look pretty beat up right now and that we've been here for a while, but it'll all be worth it in less than an hour. I remember how Videl and your mom looked right before they gave birth, completely exhausted, sweaty, and pale and like them, I'm getting the crap beat out of me just like them. It's awful and I hate it but I know what the other side looks like. All this pain for our little girl," she said with as much love and sincerity as she could muster, "I need you to pull together because when I start pushing it's going to get real ugly in here," she laughed which brought laughter out of Trunks.

"Alright, I'm back, I have ice chips and one hot midwife!" Goten announced as he cheerfully bounced into the birthing room. He made his way over to the soon-to-be parents and smiled at them innocently. "Now, no rush, but there's a baseball game on at seven, which gives us-"

"Goten..." the brunette midwife scolded while she washed her hands. "We don't decide when the baby comes out, the baby does."

"Please tell me we're going to start pushing," Marron cried, bringing her attention to her fellow midwife, "My contractions are so close together and I feel like I need to push. I'm begging Marina."

"I know Mar, let's see how much you're dilated," Marina responded as she approached the woman in labor. "If you wouldn't mind Goten."

"No problem babe, I do not want to see this," Goten said as he practically jumped back.

"So have we decided on her name, I'm team Cami," Marina asked Marron and Trunks. She hoped that the conversation of their daughter would distract Marron from the discomfort.

"Hey, I thought we chose Gotina, after her favorite Uncle," Goten expressed, very annoyed at the possibility of her being named something else.

"How about you get Marina pregnant and name YOUR kid that," Trunks harmlessly countered.

"Well if you too diva's are done I'd like to say what I want to name MY daug-" Marron began but was cut off by a contraction.

"Perfect timing sweetheart because it's time to push," Marina excitedly proclaimed the good news.

She knew she was going to be a mother when she saw the two pink lines on the pregnancy test. It felt even more real when she saw her first picture, heard her heartbeat, and found out that she was having a baby girl. However, hearing her friend announce that it was time to start pushing a wave of anxiety overcame Marron which Trunks picked up on quickly.

"Trunks I'm scared," she cried.

Trunks took her shaking hand into hers and calmly spoke to her, "You don't need to be, you know what happens after this, you push, you scream, you cry and you get that baby out." with his free hand he cupped her chin and kissed her. "I promise it'll all be worth it."

With tears trickling down her face she confidently gave Trunks a head nod before turning to her midwife. "Alright Marina, I'm ready."

"Why do we have to go see the baby again?" Pan asked with a sassy scoff, her eyes glued to the smartphone in her hands.

"Well Pan," Videl sighed, annoyed, "Marron and Trunks are family. Plus don't you want to see the new baby?"

"Not really, it can't really do anything. Also, I don't want them to ask me to watch their baby. I'm almost fourteen and that's when you and dad will start letting me go off by myself," Pan rationalized with an eye roll. Just like any other thirteen year old, she was going through her self-centered stage. So being here was a major inconvenience for her.

Videl couldn't help but laugh at how melodramatic Pan was. "Trust me, sweetheart, I don't think Marron or Trunks would have you babysitting their daughter," she retorted when she came off the Capsule Corp. elevator.

It took a minute for Pan to register her mother's shady comment. "Hey! What's that supposed to mean," she asked as she followed.

"I just think you're jealous you're not the baby anymore," Videl jokingly taunted.

"Well, technically I still am until Uncle Goten has another baby!" Pan defensively yelled.

Videl decided not to respond, she didn't want to get Pan more worked up than she already was. Plus they had already reached their destination. Videl lightly tapped on the door before opening it. The scent of the new baby overcame her as she stepped into the room. A wave of nostalgia overcame her and took her back to the day her baby was born.

"She's here! It's a girl!"

With those words her head crashed into the hospital pillow; she had done her job, nevertheless, she was not ready to rest yet, she needed to meet the little girl who had caused her so much pain. With weak noodle arms, she reached out for her girl. "I need to see her."

"No worries Mrs. Satan just needed to clean her up a little bit," the doctor responded with calmness.

She was still out of breath from pushing when the doctor placed the bloody child on her chest which immediately brought a wave of tears. She couldn't believe it. She had carried this girl inside her for nine months and was finally able to meet her. Videl wasn't an emotional person but holding her newborn daughter in her arms was bringing an emotional side of Videl no one had witnessed before. Motherhood wasn't something she had sought out for but holding her baby in her arms brought a new type of happiness Videl had never experienced before. "Hello, I'm your Mama," she sobbed as she petted her silky black hair. "I love you so much already.

"You did a wonderful job Videl," Gohan said with tears before going in for a kiss. "I'm so happy to meet our daughter. She's perfect."

"Yes, you are perfect," she said lovingly as she locked eyes with her curious newborn

"Uncle Goten!" Pan cheerfully exclaimed, bringing her mother out of her nostalgia as she darted towards the man with her arms wide open.

Goten embraced his niece into a hug. "Hey, aren't you supposed to be in class."

"My mom picked me up early so she didn't have to rush over to pick me up once school was out," Pan answered. "So where's this new baby."

"Right here," Marron said as she entered the room with Trunks behind her.

"Marron, you should not be walking, you just gave birth," Videl admonished sternly as she approached her. "Aren't you exhausted anyways. I know it's been a few years since I gave birth, but I barely had enough energy to keep my eyelids opening after pushing Pan."

"Mama!" Pan whined.

"I wish I could sleep, but the adrenaline rush is keeping me up. And don't worry Venus, Trunks and I just went out on the balcony for some fresh air," Marron replied before tilting the baby so Videl could see her.

"Awe that's such a unique name and she's so adorable," Videl whimpered. "Can I hold her?"

"Of course Videl," Marron answered as she overly cautiously handed her daughter over. "Trunks liked the name Venus which was inspired by her Grandpa Vegeta."

"Speaking of grandparents? Where is everyone?" Videl questioned but her eyes were glued onto the newborn. She couldn't make out which feature she inherited from which parent, but it was clear as day where she got her lilac hair coloring from.

"My parents stopped by for a little bit. They figured they would want as much time to ourselves since we'll be moving in with them until we can find our own place," Trunks answered. "Plus I'm still working with my mother and I really don't want her to be alone in her apartment," he said while assisting Marron back into her bed.

"I still don't understand why you guys didn't get married and move in together like my Grandma and Grandpa," Pan huffed. "I mean don't you guys love each other?"

Videl diverted her attention to her daughter, glaring at her for her rudeness. "Pan what did I tell you about being so nosey judgmental like your grandmother?"

Marron laughed causing some of the tension from the mother-daughter to ease up. "No worries Videl, it's a valid question. As you know Venus wasn't planned so when we found out we were so shocked. Originally we wanted to get married but eventually, we realized that we shouldn't be forcing marriage upon ourselves because of the baby."

"On top of that we want to make sure we could enjoy both of these milestones individually, we're happy with the choice we made," Trunks said, gazing lovingly at Marron.

The moment was interrupted by Venus' small cries for attention. Trunks jumped at the opportunity to come to her aid but quickly realized that what she needed was something he could not give her: milk. Seeing that Marron would need some privacy, Videl took this as a chance for her and Pan to say their goodbyes.

The ride home was pretty amicable between them. Videl asking her usual questions about her daughter's school day and Pan bothering her mother with random preteen questions. During their moments of silence, Videl had pondered over the fact that she and Gohan had never tried for a second baby. She also couldn't recall either one of them saying one was enough. Was him not talking about having another kid, his non-verbal way of saying no more kids?

It was around dinner time they had arrived home. As the mother-daughter duo entered the home, they were immediately greeted by Gohan's welcoming words from the kitchen and the smells of an already prepped dinner.

The family of three ate their dinner together. Like every night, each member informed the others on the good and bad about their days. Pan usually did most of the talking, giving her parents the latest on the preteen drama. Videl engaged as much as she could however her mind kept wandering off to the idea of having another baby. Conflicting thoughts became overwhelming causing her to excuse herself early from family TV time, stating she was too exhausted.

However, sleep evaded her. Is this baby fever or do I actually want another baby? She asked herself as she laid restlessly in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. The crking sound of the door opening caused her to jolt up and to escape her thoughts.

"Hey," Gohan whispered. "Did I wake you up?"

"No. I can't sleep," she said, defeated.

"I could tell something was up at dinner. You didn't tell Pan she needed to not be so nosey like her grandmother. In which I usually respond, look who's talking," Gohan responded as he climbed into bed. "Did something bad happen today?"

"No. Today was fine," she said before she laid back down. "I just have a lot on my mind."

"Like what?" Gohan yawned.

"What if we had another baby?" Videl blurted out in which Gohan abruptly started laughing. This obviously made Videl even more upset. "What's so funny about that."

Gohan immediately stopped laughing once realizing the straight face Videl was trying to force. A wave of guilt overcame him now realizing he had just laughed in her face. "Wait, you're serious. Oh, Videl-"

"Is it really that ridiculous I want to have another baby. I mean I could understand the laughter if I was like forty but I'm still in my early thirties!" She hissed. "I've done it once, I can do it again."

"Videl I thought you were pulling my leg. I mean you've never mentioned wanting another kid before," He laughed as he nervously scratched the back of her head.

"Well, it didn't hit me until today while I was holding baby Venus. I thought about the day Pan was born and how much time had passed since she could fit in my arms. She'll be eighteen soon and won't wanna deal with her old dorky parents."

Gohan, who was now lying next to her in bed, pulled her close. "Do you really want to start at square one again? Remember how elated you were when Pan was finally potty trained? I'm pretty sure you cried tears of joy because you didn't have to change diapers anymore."

Videl giggled. "Yes, I'm sure. What about you?"

"What's another kid?" Gohan shrugged before quickly rolling on top of her. "Plus making one is my favorite part."

"Gohan!" Videl shrieked, mortified by his attempt to come onto her.
