Anna and Kristoff had been married for three years. They had a beautiful daughter, Amber, only a few months old, and their life was extremely happy. They'd proven that Hans wasn't evil, and they had included the trolls into their society. Everything was perfect. Except, Anna had forgotten one thing.
Kristoff was suspect to being mind-controlled, as well.
She had mentioned it, before, but with war on the horizon, it seemed a little less important than Hans. In fact, she had forgotten all about it, until a particular evening, when she wandered into the nursery, to find Kristoff, rocking Amber to sleep, and singing to her.
"Born of cold, and winter air,
and mountain rain combining
This icy force, both foul and fair
Has a frozen heart worth mining.
So, cut through the heart, cold and clear
Strike for love, and strike for fear
See the beauty sharp and clear
Split the ice apart!
Beware the frozen heart!"
Anna had never heard this song, before, and it didn't seem exactly like a lullaby.
Kristoff continued. Born of cold and winter air,
And mountain rain, combining.
This icy force, both foul and fair
Has a frozen heart worth mining.
So, cut through the heart,
Cold and clear,
Strike for love and strike for fear,
There's beauty and there's danger here.
Split the ice apart!
Beware the frozen heaaaart…" Kristoff glanced up. "Oh, hi, Anna."
"Hi." She smiled. "What song was that? I've never heard it before."
Kristoff shrugged, gently placing Amber into her cradle. "I don't know. But I've had it in my head all day."
Anna considered this for a while. "Where did you hear it?"
Kristoff tilted his head, puzzled. "Um… I don't know."
"You don't know where you heard that song?" Anna tapped her chin in thought. "That's… weird…"
"Yeah, I guess." Kristoff scratched the back of his neck. "So… uh… what are you doing?"
Anna narrowed her eyes. "You're changing the subject."
"It's just a song, Honey. It's not like I was suddenly mind-wiped by the trolls." Kristoff shrugged.
Anna's eyes widened, and she turned to look at him in shock. "We never proved you weren't!"
Kristoff face-palmed. "I wasn't, okay?"
"No, no, no, remember what Elsa said?" Anna insisted, taking Kristoff's hand and pulling him out of the nursery so they wouldn't wake Amber. "Anyone who has ever been alone with the trolls is suspect! You freely admitted to being alone with them, so…"
Kristoff shrugged one shoulder. "So what? Maybe I was. I still love you. I'm not going to go berserk, like Hans."
Anna rolled her eyes. "He's not like that, anymore. You know that."
"Yeah." Kristoff agreed. "Doesn't change the facts. He did go berserk. And I won't."
"Alright." Anna admitted. "But you still might have been mind-controlled. I'm going to find out where that song is from."
After hours and hours in the palace library, weeks of interviewing the people of Arendelle, Anna came up with… nothing. Absolutely nothing. She brought it up to Elsa, in hopes that one of the Northuldra would know. Nothing. Kristoff really wasn't helping, either. All he would do, when Anna questioned him, was insist that the search was pointless, and futile.
This continued, until one early spring morning, before the sun came up, that Anna was awoken by Kristoff muttering and thrashing next to her.
"Kristoff!" She shook his shoulder. "Wake up, it's a dream!"
"No, please!" He murmured. "I have a family!"
Anna grabbed one of her pillows, and whapped him across the face with it. "WAKE UP!"
"What? Huh? What's going on?" Kristoff asked, pushing the pillow off his head. "Anna!"
"Hi." Anna smiled, giving him a little wave. "Nightmares, you know…"
Kristoff's face suddenly sobered. "Anna, you were right. I think… you need to talk to Grand Pabbi."
"Grand Pabbi?" Anna asked incredulously. "But… he's in jail."
Kristoff shrugged, tucking himself back under the covers. "Yeah, well… that dream I just had was about him mind-wiping me. As, like, a little kid. It felt super real. Might wanna check it out."
Anna gave a little fist-pump. "I knew it!"
Kristoff opened one eye. "Then, why didn't you go to Papa troll earlier?"
She shrugged. "To be honest, I'm a bit scared of him…"
"Yeah, now I am, too." Kristoff agreed with a yawn.
First thing, the next morning, Anna recruited some of the royal guardsmen, kidnapped Elsa, and went down into the dungeons to talk to Grand Pabbi. She was actually surprised at how comfortable the cell he was in appeared to be. Of course, she hadn't expected cruelty, but definitely not the homey atmosphere she was greeted with, either. It was almost like a small apartment.
"Hi, Grand Pabbi." She spoke up bravely. He was seated on the couch, reading a book. He glanced up at her, and laid it aside.
"Queen Anna. Princess Elsa." He acknowledged. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
Anna shrugged. "Oh, nothing. I was just wondering if you ever mind-controlled Kristoff?"
Grand Pabbi, surprisingly, chuckled. "Take you this long to figure that out?"
"Actually, no." Elsa admitted. "I had a hunch, way back in January, but we never really acted on it until now. So… you did? Why?"
Grand Pabbi smiled softly. "That, my children, is a long story."
"We have time." Anna encouraged, glancing at her sister.
"Very well." The troll nodded. "I suppose you deserve to know."
