Wrote this the other night. Just a silly little un-beta'd thing I thought I'd share with everyone. Reviews are appreciated, and remember I don't own these people or this show, so don't sue.
Old Faithful
____
It's not his badge.
Not the gleaming metal of number 3379, which is usually all he has to flash in order to gain access to almost everywhere a civilian cannot, that brings him a paycheck and a job he loves.
It's not his car.
Not the classic blue Mach 1, that fires up obediently when he asks it to, that carries him to and from work and everywhere else without a single misfire or oil burnoff.
It's not his vest.
Not the restrictive Kevlar and Velcro, that is only appreciated if it's been used, which means that he is still alive to appreciate the lifesaving garment he wears every second he's on the job.
It's not his gun.
Not the service Glock, that he treats like royalty because in those situations where it may be the final mediator in dire straits, the lives of colleagues and innocents depend on how well-oiled the firing mechanism is; how accurate the sights are.
It's not his on-duty car.
Not the city-owned Crown Victoria, that carries him around during the shift, with its rear cage and glass to protect from overzealous passengers, and the light bar, spotlight and siren that allows him to drive and park however is necessary and however he damn well pleases.
It's not his set of cuffs.
Not the steel, standard-issue restraints, which subdue those who would do great harm if they were not bound by the keyed internal gears and cold metal.
It's not his radio.
Not the black Motorola that remains clipped to his belt throughout the shift, with its coiled cord and mic that perches on his left shoulder like some electric parrot, squawking critical information to him and provides a link to emergency assistance and medical help if he calls for it.
Old Faithful isn't even very old. It's a woman who rides into battle at his side rain or shine; in good times and bad, the only person he can open up to and who he trusts more than he will ever trust any vehicle or piece of equipment long as he lives.
And with her by his side, he's sure to live for a good long while.
