Chapter 1 – A Familiar Song

iAnd when the tears you cry Are all you can believe Just give these loving arms a try And have a little faith in me/i

The song's soft rhythm soothed his senses and relaxed him greatly, but he still felt tense.

It wasn't the chilly breeze brushing past the window and into his room that bothered him, or the blare of the television from downstairs. It was a matter which he found he couldn't mend, even though it had been broken almost unintentionally.

Robbie McGrath sighed deeply as he listened to the lyrics, the words hitting harder than he'd expected. He had turned on his radio, flipping the dial to any random station playing any sort of song he could relate to.

At this point, the only song he'd found was this one. The title already struck him hard: Have A Little Faith in Me. He desperately wished that the source of his problem could hear this song, even though he had a feeling she was busy bitching around her house, barking out cynical comments and orders.

And yet, as he tried to imagine what she could be doing, he found that he wished he could be there to watch her do it. She was honestly beautiful when she was angry, and he had a feeling she knew it.

But when she wasn't angry...when she was sad or distressed (even though he hated to see her this way), she seemed to lighten up and reveal a part of herself that she normally hid under her façade.

Robbie only knew one person alive who shared his love of the radio, and that was Kim Carlisle, who inexplicably was the cause of his problems.

Why can't I take my mind off her? He thought bitterly as he leaned his face into his palms, his eyes shutting momentarily. He fought to concentrate on the song only, and to forget Kim. But the lyrics merely made him think about her more.

He ran his hands through his curly brown hair, puzzled at his feelings. He'd known he'd liked her for some time, and yet, he couldn't figure out why she put herself at such a distance from him.

Finding no resolve to his never ending mental conflict, Robbie simply turned the volume up on the radio and thought more about the song.

iWhen your secret heart Cannot speak so easily Come here darlin' From a whisper start To have a little faith in me/i

"Ugh, there has to be something on the radio..."

Kim Carlisle scanned through the various stations on her radio, annoyed and frustrated. She'd come to a recent revelation that had perplexed her as it amused her.

But even though she found it slightly amusing, her issue stung hard against the image she fought to keep up.

"Hmm..." she murmured softly as she heard a certain song begin to play on her stereo. Turning it up, she listened to it, intrigued.

iAnd when your back's against the wall Just turn around and you will see I will catch; I will catch your fall baby Just have a little faith in me/i

She bit her lip as she thought about the lyrics. Their meaning hit an uncharted corner of her seemingly dark heart that she didn't know existed. And, for a brief moment, she found herself tearing up with thoughts of one boy who she let get away.

She'd told herself that he was trouble. Any guy so easily bribed by a few tears and a story about wanting to just "hang out" wasn't her type of guy. And yet, she couldn't stop thinking about this peculiar boy by the name of Robbie McGrath.

Robbie. Oh, she thought wildly, as she sighed at the thought of him. There was just...something about him, something strangely fascinating that charmed her.

Lifting her hand up to touch her lips, she closed her eyes in remembrance of the brief moment they'd shared, and the hurtful, cynical way she'd brushed him off.

She'd been careless that day. She'd almost let her cover slide. But, she thought, it won't happen again.

Smiling at her swift solution to her imperative problem, Kim reached over to turn off the radio, when she paused, listening to the song still.

iWell, I've been loving you for such a long time girl Expecting nothing in return Just for you to have a little faith in me/i

She sighed miserably as she rolled her eyes, shutting the radio off and falling onto her bed.

But, as she shut her eyes and tried to fall asleep, the words stung in her mind.

I wonder if Robbie heard that song...she thought, immediately cursing herself and slapping her forehead.

Who cares if that numbskull heard the stupid song, she thought angrily. Yet, she cursed herself for saying that too.

How could she think such things...Robbie was smart, funny, attractive...but, he was a freshman with no status, and she couldn't jeopardize her image. No, she couldn't do that.

And so, she thought with slight depression, she was doomed to walk the earth alone due to her lack of courage to ditch her image and seek out someone who was truly right for her.

It's a small price to pay, Kim thought with some sort of strange satisfaction, when you're Kim Carlisle.

iI said I will hold you up, I will hold you up Your love gives me strength enough So have a little faith in me/i

"Robbie?"

Robbie's eyes sharpened and he shifted his position to glare at his friend. At her look, he realized he'd been daydreaming. Again.

"Sorry." He apologized, rubbing his face with his hands and leaning back against the lockers.

Lily smirked, cocking her head slightly to the side to stare at him.

"Are you sure nothings been up lately?" She asked. When Robbie only shook his head slowly and stared off down the hall, Lily rolled her eyes.

Robbie's attention was escaping him once more as he stared into space. He could hear his friends bickering next to him; Lily's swift punch hitting Ray square in the shoulder, Travis reciting a Gandhi quote...Nothing made this day any different than any other day. Except what had just appeared in the hallway, walking elegantly, head held high and mouth pert with a condescending attitude.

Robbie's eyes grew wide as he watched Kim walk past him in the hall, his eyes following her as she disappeared up the stairs.

He sighed, his brows furrowed in saddened confusion at the strange relationship he had with the voice of Cougar Radio.

The only person to see Robbie's wandering eyes and unusual sigh was Lily Randall, and she suddenly seemed to understand things all too well.

Walking towards him, she leaned against the lockers. "Why don't you talk to her?"

"What?" Robbie replied, not realizing that Lily was next to him, or that she had seen him watch Kim.

"You should ask her out or something. You'll never know how things will turn out unless you try."

Robbie pursed his lips, knowing full well that she was right. He felt slightly angry at that thought. Why was it that Lily could always read him like a book?

"I can't talk to her." He said suddenly, his crossing his arms across his chest and staring straight ahead.

"Why not?"

"She's too... Kim." He answered, turning to look at her with unhappy eyes.

Lily laughed and nudged him in the shoulder. "I understand, but you have to try!"

"I know..."

"So do it!"

Robbie felt a smirk come across his face. "You should really be the one to talk here, Lily."

Lily blushed, her eyes casting downwards. "Just take my advice, okay?" She replied, her smile weak as she walked away.
