He had been looking for it since noon. He had spent the past four hours retracing every step he had taken all day, but still no luck. He wouldn't let it go that easily, though. It was too important to him. The only time it wasn't with him was when he played tennis, when he kept it in a little box in his tennis bag. But he hadn't been playing tennis when he lost it.

"Kikumaru."

"Hoi!" Eiji dodged a ball aimed at his face that he could have easily hit, had Ryuzaki-sensei not interfered, "What are you doing, trying to get me killed?"

"Do you know where Oishi is?" she asked.

"Hmm?" Eiji looked around, as if Oishi was obviously somewhere on the courts and hiding, "No, wait, I haven't seen Oishi since the second bell..."

He had been so disappointed to find they had only first period together this semester.

"Well, he's not at practice. Shouldn't you, of all people, know where he is?" She had that hinting sort of smile in her eye again, the one that irritated Eiji. People shouldn't make assumptions, even if they _are_ true.

Eiji shrugged. "I can find him, though!" and he jogged off the court before Ryuzaki could say anything else.

She sighed. It was better just one of the boys missed practice and not both, but the two were inseperable, anyways.

Eiji checked the club room, first, as it was the most likely place for Oishi to be. After finding it empty, apart from a few pairs of misplaced shorts and some tennis balls, he checked the phone booths, and the library. The logical places.

But he wandered into the bathroom because he had to use it himself, not because he expected to find Oishi bent down, apparently looking for something under the sink.

"Oishi..? What are you doing, nya?"

Oishi let out a tiny gasp, like a little inverted sigh, and gave Eiji a _look_ that could only be described as distressed.

"Eiji, I... My ring... er, the one you gave me...," he struggled to find suitable words. Eiji gave him the ring for Christmas and had saved for it for god knew how long.

Eiji's eyes sparked, remembering, and suddenly he laughed, although Oishi couldn't find the humor. Eiji should have been angry.

"I have it," he said, reaching into his pocket, "you dropped it after the test first period, and by time I noticed, you were already leaving. Meant to find you at lunch and give it to you... heh."

Oishi's face brightened, and he pulled Eiji into a hug, right there in the middle of the bathroom. "I was afraid I had lost it. I've been looking for it since twelve."

Eiji grinned, "You know, even if you lost it, you'd still have me."
