Title: Surprise Visit

Author: Nadia Mack

Spoilers: Season 4

Character Focus: Clark Kent's POV and Lois Lane

Summary: I suck at summaries, but this is pretty much a filler scene that can be inserted anywhere from where ever we left off on in Smallville. Btw, this is my first fan fiction delving in Smallville territory.

Disclaimer: I own nothing. I have nothing. So let's not make things any worse, okay.

Clark is outside his home rehearsing the football plays he learned at practice earlier that day. Since Jason's sudden termination from the team, his anxiety level is at an all-time high. Though his relationship with Chloe is strained, they continue to remain friends.

And Lana, well, he doesn't know how to feel about her anymore, and it's suffocating him because every time he sees her, she goes on a huge tirade against me, and he doesn't know how much more he can take it.

He throws a pass towards a scarecrow around 50 yards down the field, hitting it straight at its center.

"Nice to see the quarterback keeping in shape," a voice suddenly came behind him.

He sighs upon hearing the voice he's come to learn all too well.

How does she do that, he thought.

Unaffected by what she may have seen, he turns around, "Lois" he muttered dryly. Despite himself, he had to admit that she looked beautiful, though he'll never admit that to her.

"Relax, Smallville" she approached him without a tinge of intimidation. "I come in peace"

He couldn't help but grin at the statement.

"To what do I owe this pleasure..." he proceeded.

She tosses him a package

"What's this?"

"A gift," she replied.

Staring at it, "A gift?" he looked at her skeptically.

"I'm not the wrapping kind of gal"

He raised his eyebrow and after a moment of awkwardness, Lois caught the meaning of her phrase and replied quickly with, "Okay, bad choice of words, work with me here will you." He chuckled at her recovery.

Carefully opening it, he is surprised of the content inside. Tracing the outline of the frame, he became loss for words as he stared at the photo that was taken from his first football game, the one of him in the field being lifted by his teammates. He looked up to thank her only to find her climbing back into her car.

"Hey..." he ran faster than he intended, but luckily she was backing out and didn't notice. "LOIS!"

He was sure he was loud enough for her to hear, and for a brief second, she turned back and winked at him, carrying a smile that can brighten any dark day, and he was surprised at himself for smiling back just as happily.

And then she was gone.

There wasn't a single wave shared or a single goodbye uttered between them, and as mysterious as his life has been, there was one thing that this moment revealed to him, not everyone was out to get him, and the thought gave him a new level of comfort in this crazy life of his.

As her car disappeared from view, he found himself staring back at the framed photo that captured his first sense of belonging before looking back up again to see that very same feeling driving away.

The End
