Gil Grissom noticed his wife, Sophia, serenely rocking in the rocking chair. It was a complete change of mood from just a few hours earlier, when she was screaming and yelling at him. As much as he had been exposed to less than cultured people in his lifetime, even he wasn't sure of some of the vulgar names she was calling him. He knew she hadn't been in the best of moods, but to see and hear his normally calm and collected wife fall apart like that was heart wrenching. And he knew he was the cause of the pain.
He entered the room and pulled up a chair so he was sitting as close to Sophia as possible. Gil began to tenderly stroke her hand, hoping she would allow him to touch her now. "I'm sorry, honey," he said ruefully.
Sophia looked at her husband in confusion. "Sorry for what, love?"
"The pain you went through," was Gil's reply. "It was my fault."
A laugh escaped Sophia's lips. "It was just as much my doing as yours. You did your best to help and I lashed out at you. I shouldn't have tried to face the pain without some help. I'm the one who should be apologizing."
Sophia carefully handed Gil the small bundle in her arms. "Besides, I think the end result is worth it, don't you – Daddy?"
Although Gil still felt remorse at the pain Sophia went through giving birth to their son, he had to agree. As he gazed upon the newborn in his arms, he said, "Yes, he is."
