the air always seems sweeter when she's near. somehow, he's not quite sure how, but somehow all the problems in his life melt away whenever she smiles at him. all his insecurities, his worries, they just disappear when she holds her arms out to him.
when he feels the mark burn, and he sees her worried glance, he smiles because he knows that it'll all be better once he can get back to her.
after a day of bowing and scraping and trying, trying to make a place for himself in the new world, just staring down at her sleeping form is enough to convince him that it's worth it.
when all he can hear is the jumbled cries and scream of his victims, her voice is the only one that can quiet the noise in his head.
he's not sentimental, but there are times when he can swear that the universe made her just for him. and he'll do anything to keep her.

the world's changed, and he doesn't recognize any of it. he was a part of the revolution, but he can't see himself in any of the change.
he feels like his entire life is out of order, and sometimes he secretly wants it back to how it was.
but there's a tattoo on his arm, and a black robe hanging in his wardrobe, and he knows his duty. his parents are waiting for him to announce that he has reclaimed their old titles. their lost fortune.
iv.
some days she's not as receptive. some days she likes to argue with him. likes to push the boundaries of his generosity.
but he knows she's as frustrated as he is. she only wants the best for him, the same as he wants for her.
he knows that she's getting tired of waiting. she wants it over now.
ii.
she's the only thing he remembers. she's exactly the same as she was before the war. none of it seemed to have touched her.
he knows she wasn't on any side during the fighting. her parents took her abroad and kept her there until it was all over. and then, when it as all over and the green lights faded, they took up immediate support of the winning side. and traded her away for a secure place in Voldemort's circle.
not that he was complaining. that's how he got her. and he intended to keep her by any means necessary.
v.
he tries to keep her happy. really, he does. but it's getting harder and harder. the potions keep needing to be strengthened. the spells have to be applied more frequently.
he hates when it comes time to slip the potions into her food, or throw a spell on her. it reminds him of the old days. of how, in some ways, nothing's changed. his parents are getting everything they ever wanted, and he's still trying to hold on to something pure and true. something he could never be, and now couldn't ever have.
