They all mock me. Even the ones who claim they are my friends, the ones who claim they don't laugh at the jokes made behind my back. They laugh.
I've never been brilliant at anything. That's why I was so thrilled when James Potter, Sirius Black, and Remus Lupin started to hang around me. Talk to me. I finally felt accepted, by the most popular, admired boys at the school, no less. But I was so naive. Now I see. They were just around me for a good laugh. Especially Sirius. Sometimes, when my back was to him and I was facing James and Remus, they would burst out laughing. I never knew why. Now I know. Sirius was mocking me, right behind my back.
No, I never caught him.
But I know it all the same.
I'm hopeless in classes. I never fail to blow something up in Potions, or squash the beetles we're supposed to turn into butterflies in Transfiguration. Lily Evans helps me, pretends to be my friend, pretends to care about helping me. But I can see the pity in her eyes.
I can't believe I'm just realizing this. I can't believe that I never saw it before. For seven years, they've been laughing at me, and I was too oblivious to notice. I was lost in this dream world where I had great friends, where I belonged.
But He came along. And He showed me the truth.
He asked me to join his side. And I have accepted.
Well, James, Lily, Sirius.
Look who's laughing now.
