Kagome raised her head from the sofa pillow. Her eyes glued to the latest News. Another amber alert, another high school girl missing. What made Kagome sit up was the picture of the girl, she was described as a First Year student, fifteen, brunette, and the kicker, she wore the same uniform—from Kagome's school. What the hell is going on?
The reporter issued a warning, that all students regardless of school district get home as quickly as possible when classes ended and not go out alone unless accompanied. No wonder the Principal had cancelled all after school activities. To reduce the risk.
"Is this why mom was so hellbent on me getting you?" The question tumbled from her on a breath. A tense cord wound its way around her chest and she bit her lip. What if the creep was targeting all first-year students? Was he going around abducting girls and keeping them somewhere? Or... Killing them?
No. That would mean a body would have been found. This was a recent disappearance. Maybe she's still alive.
Inuyasha tipped the hat over his eyes, he hadn't even glimpsed at the screen. "Idiot. Don't worry so much." His grumbled words made him sound much older than he appeared.
With a huff, she pushed off the couch.
"You forget I have the upper hand here."
She made it to the window. A survey of the quiet street revealed nothing more but darkened houses, and a stray car passing. No creeper lurking around the front lawn. "He hasn't been caught, which means he's still out there. In this district."
She glanced back, he tapped the hilt of his ancient blade. Naturally, he could handle masses of demons. Destroy an entire building with a mere swing of his blade. But if this guy had a gun. Inuyasha may be strong and fast, especially with Tetsusaiga, but he wasn't bulletproof.
"If we stay in, we should be fine. I mean, the police are all over the area. No one's gonna make them self an easy target now that the news have gotten out." Kagome tracked the passing of another stray car until she couldn't see the headlights down the road. This part of town wasn't as busy, from the weeks she'd worked here, nothing ever happened.
"You can't stand there all night, watch a movie or something. Let me handle surveillance duty."
Right. That's why he was here after all. Kagome let the curtain close and returned to the couch. Picking up the remote she switched the channel to Netflix. The phone rang, she picked it up from the coffee table. Maybe it was Kinomoto-san calling in to check up. She should be home soon.
"Hello? Kinomoto residence."
"Hey, Kagome. Everything alright?"
"Yup." She browsed through the genres for something comedic, anything to get her from feeling so wound up.
"That's great, I'm going to leave work a little later tonight is that ok?"
"Yeah. It's fine."
"Alright, I might be coming home around twelve, but I'll call you soon as I can."
"Ok."
"The kids asleep?"
"Tucked in since nine."
"Excellent."
Not five minutes after ending the call, the phone blurted its ring. Did Kinomoto-san forget something?
"Kinomoto residence." Kagome sighed and picked a random title that promised jokes and hysterics. Weird. Kinomoto-san sounded breathless, a crackle burst and she moved the phone away before carefully edging it close to her ear.
"Hello, Kinomoto-san, are yo—" The line went dead; Kagome, felt her chest tighten. That wasn't normal. What was that? Should she try calling back? The phone's registry marked the latest call as Unknown. So it wasn't Kinomoto-san? A wrong number or...? No. That's impossible.
He must have felt her tension and peeked up from under the edge of the cap, "What?"
"I don't know... Someone else called but didn't say anything. Then the line just..." Kagome shook off the chill and offered her best smile, "Ah, I'm just worrying over nothing. Probably a wrong number."
"That's a common thing?"
"It happens a lot, there's also drunk dials, pocket dials... Mistaken texts."
"Why does it sound like you're trying to convince yourself?" His golden eyes seemed to darken, penetrating right through her.
Kagome shook her head. "It's just silly. Never mind." She stared at the screen, and hit the select button on the remote. She needed to get her mind off of the creep. Off of the girl someone she should've known. Someone hauled up in some dank room, most likely terrified. Suffering.
The phone stood on the glass table. It's screen a dull grey. Then it suddenly flashed orange and gave a sudden ring. Unknown Caller.
"Unknown, that can't be another accident." Inuyasha had no way of knowing, but his hand found hers and squeezed it. Golden hues focused on the screen.
Kagome swallowed but it did nothing to quell the tightness. She squeezed his hand and pressed the phone to her ear. "Kinomoto residence."
Low heavy breaths again.
"Who is this? Please speak up." If it was some dumb kid up late with nothing better to do, she swore... The line cut.
Inuyasha stared ahead, his jaw worked.
"I just thought... It might be a prank.. That's a thing idiot kids pull. It happens." Hopefully, she wasn't up for creeps tonight.
"It didn't sound like some bratty kid to me." Inuyasha's hand gripped at the hilt of Tetsusaiga.
"I forgot you can hear..." She bit down on her lip and fumbled with the phone. If it wasn't a pranker, and something worse. She had to report this. Move the kids. She needed to—
"Don't answer it again." Inuyasha's sharp command sliced through the near deafening ring. In their silence, every sound echoed off the walls.
She waited for the unknown caller to give up. The phone rang and rang. Endlessly. Until the silence reclaimed the air and the screen darkened.
She dialed 1-1-9 and reported the disturbance to an operator. "Please retrace the call, it's late and I'm not feeling safe." She listened while the operator typed and requested some info which she obligingly gave. With the reassurance of a check-up she lay back and sighed.
If it was a prank, all she had to do was ignore it.
When it let out a burst of sound she clutched it. Unknown caller. She stared at the glowing screen and it stared back.
"Kinomoto residence."
"Have you checked the children?" A deep, near whispered voice. None unlike any she's ever heard.
"Who is this?"
A pause, then, "You aren't a good sitter, are you?" A male's voice, definitely. He chuckled when she didn't reply, "If you don't hurry, they'll vanish."
Kagome's blood turned to ice and her fingers numbed. "Th-this isn't funny."
Inuyasha's eyes narrowed, gold hardened to a lethal, familiar look. As though they were back in the warring states and not the present.
"It is, actually." The voice said, "I'm just dying to meet you. Higurashi."
He knew her name.
Kagome felt her blood congeal to ice. Who was this guy?
The line cut. Heartbeats later, the phone emitted another trill of sound.
"K-Kinomoto residence!"
"I ran a trace," The operator said, "it's coming from inside the house."
