Teaser: "the girl, with the bomb, how is she?"

Spoilers: It's the End of the World and As We Know It

The End of the World

Derek Shepherd looks up at the sound of the door opening. That bomb sergeant again? Dylan Young was going to have to accept that Derek wasn't going anywhere. He wasn't leaving, that was that.

"Doctor Shepherd?"

No. Not the sergeant. Derek recognizes Yang's voice. He dares to look away from Doctor Bailey's husband, his pink brain exposed to Derek's hands. "What is it, Doctor Yang?"

"Sergeant Young wants you to know we're moving the bomb. No one in here is allowed to leave the room."

Is it just Derek's imagination or is there an odd, uncharacteristic strain in Yang's voice? Yang, who took everything in stride and without panic. Even the bomb hadn't seemed to faze her…

…until now.

"You're going with them?"

"Yes." There is a long pause from Yang, as if she is fighting something. "I have to."

Derek turns back to the dying man on his table. "The girl, with the bomb, how is she?" He had managed to catch a glimpse of her for a split second. Young, he had thought, and raw.

Poor girl.

"The girl…" Derek almost jerks his head around to look at Yang. There are tears in her voice. "With the bomb… is Meredith…"

For a moment, there is dead silence in the room. The only movement is Derek's head snapping up, jerking around to stare at Yang. For the first time since she has met him, Derek looks to be completely at a loss.

He looks like a deer in the headlights.

"What?" he demands.

"I have to go," Yang replies, turning and shutting the door behind her.

Derek almost follows. Almost. Except he still has Tucker Jones's exposed brain spread out before his fingers. He still has scapulas in his hands.

Meredith… he can imagine her easily, with an arm nearly at elbow's length in a man's chest, pale and trembling as her very life ticked away.

Slowly, sluggishly, he turns back to the last remaining, brave of his team. "Let's finish this," he tells them, praying for an easy surgery. Meredith… I'll be there soon, I promise… you don't have to do this alone…

Meredith…

"I have a feeling."

"I get those."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah."

"And?"

"If you wait long enough it passes."

"You promise?"

"I promise."

God, why hadn't he told her to go home?

"I need pressure," Derek says.

His hands are shaking as he lifts the knife.

Notes: It's the End of the World (Part II) has got to be my favor episode of Grey's Anatomy, ever. I was glued to my seat for the entire hour. I screamed at my TV when it was done. Now, I'm praying for Sunday, which is something I don't normally do. God, I just can't wait for it. So I wrote this to quench my thirst. I think this next episode might be used as the push Derek needs to realize how much he needs Meredith. But that could be me and my hopeful thinking. XD

Except another short one-short after Sunday's episode!
