Author's Notes: Filler for 'The Woman in Limbo'. I've always wanted to write in a scene here, and finally got the inspirations I needed. Short, but I like it just the same.

"We're gonna find out what happened to your mom. Okay?"

"You can't promise me that, Booth."

His tone was as serious as she'd ever heard it. "I can, and I am."

Brennan leaned forward, resting her forehead against the heel of her hand. "Don't... Don't say that."

He eyed his partner curiously. "Why not, Bones?"

She sighed before raising her head, their gazes locking. Booth was shocked to see tears glinting in her eyes. "You'll make a promise and I'll just end up disappointed because despite all logic I still believed what you said."

Slowly, he moved from his position to sit beside her on the couch. "I am not going to disappoint you. The last thing I want is to make a promise that I can't keep."

Brennan sighed. "You can't be sure though, Booth. Do you know how many sets of remains are locked up in that lab? Do you know how many even I can't identify?" Unintentionally, the volume of her voice began to rise. "We were lucky to even make it this far!"

"That wasn't luck, Temperance. That was skill and talent." Gently, he wrapped his arm lightly around her shoulders. "And there's plenty more where that came from. You and me, we're going to find out what happened."

She leaned into him slightly. "We do work well together, don't we?" Her voice was soft.

He laughed, pulling her closer. "Yeah. We do."
