They drove in silence, each lost in their own thoughts.

He pulled the car into the private garage and turned off the engine. His gaze circled the space before he got out, walking around to the passenger side to open the door for Mrs Cain. It wasn't an act of chivalry, but to ensure that he was right beside her if there was any sign of danger.

They walked quickly to the private elevator, which Mrs Cain opened with her personal key and stepped inside. He stepped in, standing between her and the door, a human shield in case of danger. They both knew that Leopold's kidnapping was likely not about money but about something personal and the person that would take him would have no trouble attacking any of them. Technically, playing bodyguard wasn't part of his job, but what would be the point of bringing Leopold home to nothing.

A little voice nagged at him from a place in the past. It was a voice he'd often heard during his last weeks with the FBI. It was the voice that made him fight the rule book, to question the standard protocols. It was the voice that lead him to his new path, which led him to that elevator.

He reached out and hit the stop button.

"Mr Knapp. Is something wrong?" Ellie Cain's voice came from behind him.

He turned to face her.

"Two things I need to say to you before we go back in there. And I need you to listen to them both very carefully."

Mrs Cain nodded.

"First." He tried to keep his voice soft, calm. To avoid a lecture, even though she deserved it. "Don't ever pull a stunt like that again. That sort of thing is exactly why we have to keep all of this as quiet as we can. But more importantly, he could have been the real thing and he could have been setting you up to take you or even kill you. And Leopold does not need to come home to find his mother dead because of him. That sort of thing is bad. Really bad for a kid to have to live with. Got that?"

"Yes. I understand." She said softly, her voice catching.

"Second. I want you to know that I know that this is hard on you. You are facing the chance that your son is lost forever. You can't imagine that someone would do this, especially someone you know and trust. This strange guy that you pretty much think is a jerk is pushing you around and telling you what to do and sometimes you just want to slap him." He smiled slightly as he caught Mrs Cain forcing herself not to nod at his words. "And most of all you want to cry and scream and throw things and punch people and wake up in the morning and it was all a bad dream. I know those feelings, I've been there. I know how crazy this can all make you feel. It's hard to keep a brave face, but I need you to do your best."

"What if I can't?"

"I find that going up on the roof and screaming bloody murder works really well."

"Just tell you where I'm going."

"You got it." He nodded with a grin as he reached for the button.
