Chapter 26: Show Him

They have been walking for hours now and they were getting hungry. Kakashi suggested to stop so they can rest and eat. They found a clearing with a lake. Naruto and Yuffie chose to sit under the shade of a willow tree while the others took the tree right next to them being five feet away. Everyone went through their packs looking for something to eat. Yuffie was happily going through her pack looking for her lunch box with the leftovers from Naruto's cooking from last night. She was humming while looking for their foods.

"Found them!" She said in a sing song voice. She passed Naruto's lunch box and his canteen of her special made lemonade. She started to eat her lunch and talked lively to her big brother. She laughed from something she said while Naruto just nodded and slowly ate his lunch and Yuffie was gobbling her food.

The other three just sat there watching the other two eat their lunch. They were envious of Yuffie's innocence and youth. They missed being that lively and happy for any mission given as long as they were together having fun. Sasuke watched Yuffie trying to feed Naruto a pickled cucumber. She laughed when Naruto caved in and let her feed him. She looked so happy. Sasuke watched longingly. How he wished he could have been like that when he was younger and he and Naruto would still be friends right now. He would feeding Naruto right now. They would be talking and laughing well he would smirk or chuckle but not actually laugh. Sasuke remembered how the old Naruto would be. He was carefree and loud but was true. How Sasuke wished he should have cherished a friend like that and it seems that they will never get that Naruto back anymore.

Sasuke snapped back to reality when he heard Sakura had said something. He turned to her and raised his eyebrow letting her know to repeat what she just said.

"It must be nice to be that young and not worry about things." Sakura said with a sigh. Sasuke and Kakashi just nod to what she said and continued eating so they can get moving again. It was Naruto and Yuffie the first ones to finish. They gathered their belongings and started to head out. The two person team didn't care for the other three knowing they will try to hurry up so they can observe him even more like a lab rat. Honestly Naruto was just getting tired of all this and wish he could just leave but he can't. He has made a promised and Naruto Uzumaki never goes back on his word. That is the only thing he kept from his adolescent life to never go back on his word. He figured what kind of a man would be if they couldn't keep their word.

Looking back on the path that he knew would take two days to reach their destination. He wasn't exactly thrilled about it. He was already thinking in his head the different scenarios that could happened. This Naruto liked to think ahead to prepare himself of his options and which would be the best outcome for him for not only him but for Yuffie also. Naruto knew Yuffie can handle her own. He knows this very well since he is training her but also this girl was a very fast leaner and uses her surroundings to her advantage. She was somewhat of a prodigy whatever you gave this child she would master it within that day in hours. Remembering when he was teaching her how to walk up the wall for chakra control it just took her twenty minutes to get the whole thing down. Naruto smiled at that memory and turned to look at Yuffie and ruffled her hair a bit.

"What was that for?" Yuffie whined and pushed his hand away.

"Oh, nothing. Just thinking if you are up for the mission." Naruto looked at her.

"Pft! I been on lots of missions with you Nii-san. I'm pretty sure this will be an ease for us two. I still don't know why these guys had to tag a long." Yuffie tilted her head towards the three that had finally managed to catch up with them.

"You know why they are here. I just can't believe where we are going now and how he personally asked for me." Naruto hissed the last part.

Yuffie noticed how worked up Naruto was being and who could blame him. She hated how these people think they can just pick up from where they left off like nothing happened. She believed these low lives deserved everything Naruto threw at them.

All five of them continued walking till it got dark. Throughout the time Yuffie talked to Naruto the whole way and told her new ways to torture Leon when he gets back. Naruto smiled once and a while and talked a couple of words here and there. They both stopped when Kakashi told the whole team to stop for the night. They set up their camp in a clearing with a little stream passing through. Team seven minus Naruto put up their three tents and started doing the camp fire. Sasuke was in charge of that. Naruto and Yuffie were across from them a good ten feet away. Naruto and her set up their big tent for the both of them to share. She was excited to share a tent she loved sharing a tent because she will start a tickle fight with her big brother and then it will always end up Naruto winning with Yuffie almost peeing in her undies from laughing too hard. That would tire her out and she would pass out after. First they had to do their camp fire which Naruto was doing while she got the pot and food out to prepare for dinner. Naruto thought of making beef stew which was perfect for this chilly night. She went to get some water from the stream to fill the pot up to get it started to boil. She hooked the pot on the contraption that Naruto had set up when he got the fire going. She sat in front of Naruto while he cut up the vegetables.

She loved watching him cook it seemed like a form of art the way he chopped things and just move swiftly. It was like he was dancing with his hands. She broke her gaze when she felt stares on them. She turned to look at the owner's of those eyes.

The three of them were watching Naruto cook with surprise in their eyes. They remember Naruto couldn't cook for nothing and only packed instant noodle cups. Now this Naruto is chopping vegetables and getting dinner done. Whatever he was cooking it smelled better than what they were having for dinner. All they manage to get was to make porridge. They were used to making porridge it was easy and fast to make. Didn't take up room in their pack and was light to travel. They looked at the bland gruel and just looked back at Naruto's campsite wishing they could had some of whatever he was making.

"Well this sucks." Kakashi was the first to say. Emphasis the sucks by picking up a spoonful of the gruel and just letting it go splat on top of the layer which made a hard smack sound when it landed. Sasuke and Sakura looked down at their own bowl and both made a face. They forced themselves to eat it since they will need energy for tomorrow's journey. They figured they will arrive tomorrow evening. They looked over once more at Naruto's camp longing to be part of it. They hurried to eat their food and get ready to sleep. Kakashi walked over to Naruto letting him know since he was still cooking and waiting for the food to be ready that he would have first watch then it will be Sasuke then Sakura and lastly Kakashi so he can wake them up for the travel.

Naruto just nodded at him while he looked at the pot and stir it carefully. Kakashi stood there for a bit waiting for any verbal communication but none was exchanged. Kakashi just sigh and walked away to his tent. Sasuke and Sakura watched the whole thing hoping something to come out of it a start of a new relationship maybe. They all had the same thought if that Yuffie girl wasn't there they could have more interaction with him but she stands in the way between them making sure they don't come near him. Feeling defeated and starting to get desperate they went to bed thinking of ways to get Naruto to open up to them and give them a chance.

After waiting about half an hour making sure the pieces of meat in the stew was nice and tender Naruto and Yuffie were ready to eat. For Yuffie the stew was worth the wait. The meat was so tender when she poked at it and it just fell apart and the potatoes felt like it would just melt in her mouth.

"Gah! This is so good Nii-san! I love your cooking! If I was three inches tall I would love to be swimming in this and die happily drowning in it." She said while she put another spoonful in her mouth.

Naruto had to think on what she said. It didn't make sense in what Yuffie just said and his brain couldn't processes it so all he could do was say, "Ooo-kay?" With a confused look on his face.

"Yes." was all that Yuffie said while she went back to eating her stew. Yuffie was at bliss what more could she ask for. She was eating her big brother's stew under the stars with just her and Naruto against the world. Thinking of how it was just them two got her sad and thinking. She hoped her later was received yet to the sender. If it isn't received then things will be bad next week and that's one thing she doesn't want to happen.

"Are you done yet? You need to rest for tomorrow's travel." Naruto's voice snapped her out of her thoughts. She looked down her bowl and ate what was left in her bowl and showed her bowl to Naruto with a big smile on her face.

"Good. Now let's get cleaned up and you get ready for bed." Naruto said putting the left over stew into canteens to eat tomorrow. Yuffie was washing up all the dishes in the little stream. Naruto came over to give her the now empty pot to wash. He went back to break down the contraption that held the pot over the fire put it away in his pack. Yuffie came back with all the dishes now cleaned and were drying it with a hand towel. Naruto grabbed another towel and began to help her.

"I can do it you know?" Yuffie said giving him a side glare.

Naruto chuckled, " I know but just wanted to help." Yuffie puffed her cheeks and muttered a 'fine' under her breath. They finished the dishes and put them away in their packs.

"Can't I stay watch with you tonight?" Yuffie looked at him with pleading eyes.

"No, you know how grumpy you get when you don't get your eight hours asleep and I am not dealing with a grouchy Yuffie all day tomorrow. Being on a mission with them and then with you. I will surely kill somebody." Naruto said already thinking if that were to happen.

"Yeah, your right. I don't want to be the end of that stick. Dealing with an angry annoyed Nii-san is a scary and dangerous one. Plus that nasty perv isn't around to stop. I guess he's useful in that part." She finished saying with her eyes closed with her face rest in the palm of her hand.

She stood up an stretched and bend down to go thru her pack to take out her toothbrush and paste. She went to the stream and brushed her teeth. She was surprised to feel Naruto come next to her to do the same. She turned to him and gave him a foamy paste smile. Naruto laughed a little with his toothbrush in his mouth and then continued to brush his teeth. When they were finished they went back to the tent, Yuffie went inside to get ready for bed. She took off her hand, her shoes, and lastly her socks. She knew if anything were to happen she needed to be ready for combat. At least she can fight without her shoes so it was nothing to worry about.

She laid there thinking about next week and what the outcome might be. She hopes it not as bad as last year. She tossed and turned for a bit until her body told her it was tired enough to sleep now. Naruto could sense Yuffie was asleep now. He knew by her chakra was not busy but was now mellow and could barely be sensed.

He sat there for a good hour and a half making sure Yuffie was now deep in sleep so he can move around. Somehow she knew when Naruto was on the move she would stalk him down. He doesn't blame her on how she is from her past before he adopted her till what happened two years ago. Even he can't get over the whole ordeal the difference was for him is he was affected a different way. He got up from his sitting position from the log that was around the fire pit. He went through his pack to find some gauze. He stuffed the gauze into his pocket and went in search for a lake. Thanks with the merging with Kyuubi he can sense his surroundings and can let out fire sense pulses throughout the forest or pretty much everywhere and know the layout of the place. So that's what he did and knew where the little stream would connect with the lake. He went in the direction the stream was flowing down. He followed it for half a mile and there it was a beautiful lake with the full moon reflecting off its surface. He took off his shoulder protector along with the sleeve attached to it covering his arm. He set it to the side along with the lion head emblem he wore on his shoulder protector that attached to the belt to secure it in place. Naruto took off his bandaged off his left arm he gritted his teeth with the pain shooting up his arm. He then put his arm in the cool water to lessen the pain. He looked up at the moon feeling the radiance the moon gave off it. Being at peace for a good fifteen minutes he got his arm out from the water dried it with his sleeve he took off. He then pulled out the clean gauze and started to wrap his arm from the shoulder down to his wrist. Almost done with his wrist of course something has to show up.

"Uchiha." Naruto said while he continued finishing wrapping his arm.

"What's wrong with your arm?" Sasuke asked. Naruto could hear the concern in his voice.

Naruto remained silent too occupied to reply back. He was focusing in wrapping his arm. His eyes just looked down his arm not wanting to make eye contact.

"Naruto, what's wrong? " Sasuke asked once more. Naruto finished wrapping his arm got up from his kneeling position and picked up his things. He walked passed by Sasuke not even batting his eyes at him. Sasuke made an attempt to grab Naruto's right wrist but before he could even touch him Naruto smacked his hand away.

"Do. Not. Touch. Me." Naruto said a murderous tone. He turned to face Sasuke. Sasuke can see Naruto's eyes now red and no longer those beautiful deep blue orbs.

"Look we are all just worried for you. Not just team seven but all of rookie nine." Sasuke said with his voice still lace with concern.

Naruto did a menacing chuckle before opening his mouth, "Like the concern you guys showed me five years ago?" Naruto looked him dead in his eyes.

"Listen I know I was selfish back then and all I cared about was just about myself. But I have changed." Sasuke finished saying.

"Your still being selfish. Your trying to talk to me for your own selfish gain." Naruto said.

"No, what can I gain?" Sasuke asked.

"I don't know. My techniques as Yoru the assassin. Learn things to kill your brother. Avenge your clan." Naruto stated.

Sasuke opened his mouth and shut it back again. He didn't know what to say.

"See, you've changed alright. You aren't worried for me you just want to obtain something that I have that you will never have." That was the last thing Naruto said to him and walked right passed him.

Sasuke was too stunned to move. He was thinking if what Naruto's words were true or did he really want to have Naruto back into his life. He missed him a lot throughout the years. Naruto was the one that kept Sasuke sane. Sasuke felt it was because of Naruto he never really crossed that line of no return. Sasuke knew he owed the blonde for being his only true friend. Sasuke needed to prove to Naruto that his words he told him are lies. Sasuke will show him.
