Foolish Traveler

Disclaimer: I do not own Fruits Basket, the characters, setting, and etc. all belong to Takaya-sensei…not me.
A/N: Hello there everyone! This little one-shot just popped into my head, when I was trying to think up a title for a Saiyuki one-shot, and I just have to write it. Anyway, it's been a while since I've written anything for Furuba, but I should be okay. I hope you all enjoy it. : )

That book, I remember that book, from all those years ago in Junior High. It was the book that held the tale of "The Foolish Traveler". I can remember thinking that the traveler wasn't foolish, knew exactly what he was doing, and now, years later, I can still say the same.
After all, I'm a foolish traveler too…

Sohma Momiji just smiled, as he watched the orange haired child leaf through the book. Every once in a while the child would ask him how to pronounce a word, or what a word meant, and every time Momiji gave him an answer. Large brown eyes would widen as the information was processed and a large childish grin would alit the boy's face.
Oh, Momiji loved the child dearly; saw him as his own nephew (even though Momiji was in no way the brother to either parent), and he held no ill will towards Kyo at all…Yet, every once in a while Momiji would just wish…Wish that the child could have been his.
Every time his muses trailed along that road of thought Momiji would mentally scold himself, and it was all thanks to a little crush that could just never leave. When he had been younger he was sure that he was in love with Tohru; with the way she used to care for him and dote on him and just love him for who he was. How could he not have fallen in love with her? Yet, he knew, he knew, that she would never love him in such a way…
She loved Kyo.
Kyo loved her.
That was fact, and Momiji wouldn't let any of his selfish ways change that fact, if it had made Tohru happy, then that was all that mattered. He understood that, came to accept that was his fate on that day, that day when Tohru said that she was going to leave and be by Kyo's side.
He had just smiled.
She had just smiled back.
From then on he told himself it was just a crush, told himself that he would find someone who loved him like Tohru loved Kyo, and he was still searching. But, a part of him just didn't care, because a part of him was already taken by Tohru. He knew he loved her, even now, when he continued to brush it off as a crush.
After all, he glanced down at Kyo and Tohru's son, he still wished…

Their son glances up at me, as I look down at him, the book that holds the tale of The Foolish Traveler in his tiny grasp.
He gives me a smile…Tohru's smile, and I smile back.
For the rest of my life I will travel this road…this road of a foolish traveler, so long as it means that Tohru can keep smiling.

A/N: And so, we come to the end of this-not-so-happy-but-bittersweet-one-shot. This was inspired by the manga and the fact that Momiji does in fact like Tohru in more then a friendly way. Thus, I decided to write how Momiji must have felt and still felt after Tohru stayed by Kyo's side. Kinda sad, but, I believe that's how things went for Momiji in the end. Please tell me what you think in a review and take care. : D
