Liar

Uchiha Sasuke is not a liar. When he makes promises, he keeps them. Uchiha Itachi is a liar, and Sasuke does not want to become him. So when he makes promises, he will not break them.

Sasuke has not broken one promise yet. Or at least that's what he would like to think. There is one person that he's lied to. Many people would think that just one little lie isn't such a big deal. But this was no little lie, and he hates himself for it.

Because the person he lied to was his closest friend, Uzumaki Naruto.

Little seven years old Naruto stood outside of a large mansion, staring up at it in fear. The mansion hadn't been inhabited in years, and all the children thought it was haunted. They had heard strange sounds coming from the building and some kids thought a monster lived in there.

Naruto had told them, taking his chance to get attention, that he wasn't afraid of any haunted house and had went and played ball in front of the house to prove it. He had accidentally bounced the ball too high though and it went flying over the gate, and was now residing on the front porch.

The mansion loomed over the kyuubi vessel and now Naruto understood why the other children feared it so. It looked so huge and menacing compared to him, and he was terrified. Naruto didn't want to leave his ball in there because it was the only one he had and he couldn't buy a new one because he had to use his money for food. But he was too scared to go in!

"What are you doing?" A cold voice asked. Naruto whirled around to see none other than Uchiha Sasuke, heartthrob of the Academy. Naruto felt a twinge of jealousy and admiration. He was so perfect in every aspect, and everyone loved him. Sasuke made his way over to him, and the admiration and jealousy flared. Even the way he walked was perfect!

"I lost my ball over the gates," Naruto muttered.

"Then go get it," Sasuke said simply.

"But I'm scared," Naruto whispered sheepishly. "That place is haunted!"

"Do you actually believe that too?" Sasuke asked with a sigh.

"And you don't?" Naruto asked, looking at him in surprise. Sasuke snorted.

"Of course I don't. There is no such thing as a haunted house."

"But all the other kids say that monsters live in there," Naruto whimpered. "I don't want to go in there alone!" Sasuke sighed, seeing as he was getting no where.

"How about this? I'll go in there with you and I'll protect from any monsters that try to hurt you, ok?" The dark haired boy offered.

He took it as a yes when the blonde clung to his arm and intertwined one of the Uchiha's hands with his own. He tensed up at first, not used to the contact, but soon relaxed. Sasuke was about to push open the gates when Naruto stopped him.

"Hey, Sasuke?" The Uchiha grunted in response. "You'll protect me from other monsters too, right? Not just the ones from this place, but from other ones too?"

"Sure, if you want me to," Sasuke muttered uneasily. He had never been asked something like this before.

"Do you promise?" Naruto asked hopefully.

"Yes, I promise," Sasuke replied. A wide grin spread on the blonde's face, and Sasuke felt his own lips curve up in a small smile. The two pushed open the gates, took a deep breath, and stepped into the darkness.

Uchiha Sasuke did not keep that promise though, because years later, he didn't protect Naruto from a very dangerous monster. This monster punched Naruto mercilessly, spoke heart breaking words to him, and thrust a chidori through his chest. Sasuke had promised to protect Naruto from all monsters, but he had lied, because he couldn't protect Naruto from himself.

Uchiha Sasuke had only broken one promise in his entire life, but that one lie made him feel like a liar.
