The sky is a charcoal black against the pitch-dark shadows of trees, spattered with an array of blinking silver-white stars to be admired. But there are only two people out this late, and they pay the sky no mind as they stand together in the dark. It is the sea they are focused on -- the gleaming gray water that crashes against the slate wall over and over with the push and pull of tide-driven waves.

They stand side-by-side on the low ledge, both of them, and look down at the sea, each thinking his own drifting thoughts. Yet still -- the water entrances, enraptures, ensnares the attention, captures the imagination, grips the mind and holds it tight.

"Looks different at night, huh?" the first asks, his voice absent. He is paler and shorter than his companion, and his black hair falls in waves over his forehead. He is a wild sort of boy, and it shows plainly in the brightness of his green eyes.

The other boy nods slowly and his oval glasses glint in the faint moonlight. He is handsome enough in a plain way, and in his brown eyes there is a sharp intelligence.

"Kind of makes you want to jump," he says morbidly, and there is a shocking jolt of surprised laughter -- broken and too loud in the silent darkness -- from beside him. The handsome boy's head inclines, his lips tilt up, and he begins to laugh as well. Yagyuu's voice is mellow, if plain, and in noticeable contrast with the louder, sharper sound of Kirihara's.

They taper off after a while, though, and they are left as they were before, silently contemplating the ocean, though a smile twists at the wild boy's lips.

"Makes you wanna jump," Akaya repeats quietly, white teeth flashing between bitten red lips. "It does."
