"You owe me," I mouthed to Starscream, before blasting off after Sunstorm.
Both of us knew that I'd never collect on that debt. Sunstorm was a flying time bomb, torn apart by dueling forces of nature. If he detonated on Earth, he'd blow the planet apart with him- not to mention every living thing within a thousand kilometers. My friends. Bumblebee. The Autobots. Starscream…
Sunstorm, eight kilometers ahead, already afire with core reactions. He'd go nuke any second. Get him to outer space. And the only way to get him there is to drag him all the way. Either the cold would slow the process, or at least keep him a safe distance from earth when he reaches meltdown. Would Starscream appreciate my sacrifice? Probably not. He'd just see it as another random display of Autobot weakness.
Funny. Starscream and I have been at each other's throats for so long, I almost forgot that we had been friends once….and more. Now, that's all I can think of. Fighting with each other just doesn't seem important anymore…not now.
Sunstorm,so beautiful despite his insanity. He really was a perfect clone of Starscream, right down to the lines of his wingtips, and the way he sneered because he thought he was so above us all. If Starscream was an angel, then Sunstorm was his fallen twin…and every bit as divine.
No. Have to stay focused.
"Sunstorm!" I screamed. "Listen to me! Your core is destabilizing---"
The golden jet spun and punched me.
"What hope do you or this world have? With the forces of order and chaos merging within me, my powers have grown beyond the ken of either!"
Even his voice- curse Shockwave!- even his voice was identical to Starscream's.
Still--thank Primus he was also every bit of a motor-mouth as the original. While Sunstorm pontificated, I directed all my boosters fore and slammed him in the middle, knocking his momentum. The gamble allowed me to wrap my arms around his body and rocket us both past earth's exosphere. Ignoring the radiation flames searing my armor, I tightened my hold on him and sped into blackness.
After all, what did physical damage matter? My spark had been reduced to ashes long ago. On Cybertron, I had once held Starscream to my chest in the same way I now did Sunstorm. We thought we'd been destined for each other.
So much for that. When the war broke out Starscream had become Megatron's. I had become…whose? Primus's? Or my own? On whose behalf was I acting- the Skyfire who mourned his traitor lover, or the scientist defending reason against chaos?
"You cannot thwart destiny!" Sunstorm shrieked. Nothing in his optics but madness now.
"Sorry, Sunstorm," I whispered, drawing our faces together, "I don't believe in destiny."
Then I pressed my lips to his and shut my optics. His core detonated. Our mouths liquefied, merged, and dissolved into atoms. In my final moments I imagined it was Starscream in my mouth. We would die as we had loved… incinerated within the heart of a star.
