Severus Snape watched her all the time, whether she was in class or outside with her fellow Gryffindor friends, he would just sit there and watch her. He remembered the days where he would sit there with her, laughing at some joke she would tell or a funny class moment. The times where she was with him, alone. Just Sev and Lily. He wished he was with her right now, just them together, but he knew that could not happen. Not after what he said to her. Not after he had called her that horrible word. Mudblood. After that the world hated him…and to make things worse so did Lily.

He would watch with envy pouring into him, as he saw that Potter boy talking to her, and how she was beginning to like him. How he would flirt and talk to his Lily, but no matter…he knew that she would just stay friends. That's what she would have told him. It would be the truth…or would it? Truth be told, Lily didn't talk about girl things with him, that's what Mary was for. What if she secretly liked Potter, but didn't tell him knowing that they hated each other? Severus shook his head. That couldn't be possible…he remembered what she called Potter after those encounters. An arrogant, bullying, toerag. That's what he was. He could tell by her tone of voice she was serious, she wasn't lying.

Sometimes…he would just get lost in her brilliant emerald green eyes. He couldn't help himself…she was beautiful. Her red hair shone in the sun brightly and her green eyes would sparkle when she was happy. He knew her better than anyone. More than Potter ever could. Severus Snape was in love with Lily Evans. He was the one that told her she was a witch. He was the one that was on her train ride to Hogwarts. He was the one that truly loved her. She was dreadfully popular. Severus found himself not the only one not captivated by those green eyes or red hair. He would have been fine if anyone else liked her. But no…Potter had to be one of them. Potter had to the one that bothered her everyday that would get on her nerves, that would tease him just to get her to notice him.

Severus looked around and saw Lily sitting beside a tree staring at something. No, someone. Snape followed her gaze and realized his worst nightmare had come true. She was staring at him. Of all people, she was staring at him, James Potter. The man who he hated had won the battle. The girl he loved was in love with the boy he hated the most. He saw Potter make his way toward her and Lily blushed and began to franticly pick up a book to look like she had been reading. He sat down next to her and asked her a question. Lily answered and Potter got up and held out his hand. Lily grabbed it and Snape saw their hand entwined. It was done. James Potter was now going out with Lily Evans. The supposed girl he loved since he had laid eyes on her. Severus knew he had loved Lily longer than him. He saw her first. Snape felt his heart being torn by two and quickly got up. He couldn't handle it anymore…he had to go.

His mother had told him many things before she had died. But now he only remembered one.

Life isn't fair.

Why couldn't it be?
