Mama.

The ice was cool beneath the girl's bare cheek. Tears slipped down her cheeks, freezing the skin to the frozen water. Her brown curls caressed her cheeks, the polar wind playing with the strands. Her lips parted allowing a fresh howl of grief to escape.

Mama, oh mama. Come back to me. Don't leave me here.

Her mind taunted showing her images that scared and disgusted her. A woman's body lying in the snow, her blood a stark red against the powder. An unidentifiable soldier standing above her, the horns on his helmet curving against the sky.

Impure filth. One born of disgust and hatred. I hate you.

She pushed herself up, hissing as her cheek was ripped from the ice. Her ungloved reached up and felt the blood that lay there. She pulled it back, her eyes transfixed on the crimson smears on the brown fingers.

Red. Like hers. Like him.

She stood up slowly, refusing to look at the body that lay near by. She knew what it looked like. Brown locks fanned across the ice, blue eyes wide and fearful. Blue stained with red, overpowered against the liquid.

Just like she was. Just like they do to everyone. Like they'll do to me.

She walked to the edge, her eyes watching the waves. She knew the water would be frigid. But it would help her, the water always helped her. It offered calm, an escape from the harsh reality of war. And now the escape would be permanent. She removed her coat, shivering as the wind battered her slender form.

I'm coming mama. I won't leave you. You never left me.

Her lungs froze up as she submerged herself. It immobilized her limbs, dragging her down. A small smile formed. She was going to her mama. They wouldn't be separated.

Just a minute mama. Then we can be together. Forever.

Suddenly she began to panic. Her eyes opened as a silent scream burbled from her mouth, stealing the last of the air from her lungs. She kicked trying to breech the surface. She couldn't do this.

I scared mama. I can't do it. Help me mama.

Strong arms wrapped around her midsection, pulling her from the water's now cruel grasp. She was thrown to the ices edge and clutched greedily, welcoming the air that flew around her.

Sorry mama. I wasn't strong enough. But we'll see each other again.

She was pulled to shore, her actions slow. Her senses dimmed and she felt someone lift her, shielding her from the cold. She began to slip towards unconsciousness, finally recognizing the scent that hovered around her.

Sokka. Sokka saved me. Thank you big brother.

Reassured that she would live, Katara slipped into the dark. She would awaken and continue, but not right now. Know she needed to rest, recover. She would explain later.

I'll see you in my dreams mama. Goodnight.

AN: Angsty. I kinda wrote this as a companion piece for Lucky. My mind started thinking hmmm what do you think Katara did when her mum died? So I wrote this as an answer
