The Lullaby

The five children sat, huddling around the campfire.

That day they had finally defeated the Fire Lord, and ended the hundred-year war for good. Zuko, the oldest of the small family, was the only eligible person to take the throne. He would become Fire Lord in the morning, and their mix-matched family would have to go their separate ways.

At first the adults had said they should leave that day, or at least stay the night at the palace. But the group had begged them to let them spend one more night together, huddled around a campfire.

And so here they were. Spending the night like so many nights before. The only difference was the sad silence looming through the air. All five children knew that they might not see each other again for a long time. And they were all trying their best not to show the overwhelming sadness, although none of them succeeded.

The moon was rising further into the sky, and they all knew they should go to bed. But none of them made a move toward their sleeping bags. None of them wanted the morning to come so soon.

So they sat. They did not move. They did not speak. They just sat and reflected on their pasts and adventures together, and on the many memories that swam in their brains.

Katara, the oldest girl in the group, had a particular memory stuck in her head. A memory of a song, or a lullaby to be more exact, that her mother had sung to her when she was young.

The tune flew about her head, and after a few moments she began to hum it. The other four members of the group looked at her after hearing that all too farmilliar tune.

A small smile flicked across Aang's face as he jumped up and raced to his pack, pulling out a small wooden flute.

Katara cocked her head, wandering what Aang was planning.

He took a deep breath and pulled the small flute up to his lips, and wove his fingers over the holes, beginning to play a tune. Katara smiled, recognizing it as the one she had just been humming.

The words to the luluby filled her head, and she soon began to sing the verse in her native language that she had loved as a child.

"Palartok kolu nutara,

Palartok kolu nutara,

Atanerk pialayok sapputiwok makoktok,

Palartok kolu nutara,

Palartok kolu nutara,

Senniagut amarok…"

Katara struggled to remember the next verse as Aang continued to play. Another voice soon began to sing. Katara looked up to find the young earthbender singing. Her song followed the same tune, and seemed to have the same structure, but was in a language Katara couldn't understand.

"寧靜的小,
寧靜的小,
勇敢堅強,你是,
寧靜的小,
寧靜的小,
一位勇士,你會越低…"

A small smirk came to the earthbender's face as she finished. She looked over at the firebender, as if challenging him. He smirked and nodded.

"リトル静かにさせるの1つは、
リトル静かにさせるの1つは、
火の中をのぞく、
リトル静かにさせるの1つは、
リトル静かにさせるの1つは、
それは、光パスしています…"

The four looked up as the music faded to a stop. The young Airbender was looking down at the ground, a small gleam in his eye.

"And may the four nations work in peace."
