The envelope was sitting on top of his desk when Tony entered the office that morning. He eyed the plain white envelope carefully as he circled his desk and sat down in his chair. His backpack was thrown under the desk like usual. He glanced over at McGee's desk. The younger agent was busily typing and didn't seem even a little bit curious as to the contents of the envelope. His eyes swept over the squad room, past Gibbs' empty desk and landing on Ziva. She looked up as his eyes fell on her.
"What?" She asked with a frown. She didn't look interested in the letter either.
"Nothing," Tony answered quickly. He looked back down at the letter. He wanted to ignore it, wanted to feel like the curiosity wasn't eating his insides but the truth was he rarely had mail delivered to the office, making the envelope in front of him very interesting indeed. His mail was his private business and with a super spy slash assassin sitting across from him, the more privacy he had the better.
He finally gave into the urge. He picked up the envelope and tore at the corner; just enough to slip his thumb inside and rip it open. The noise garnered the attention of his team mates and he felt their eyes on him as he pulled the single piece of paper out of the torn envelope. He unfolded the paper and read the contents.
"What's that?" Ziva asked.
Tony grinned. He knew the curiosity would get the better of his team mates eventually. "What's what?" He asked innocently.
She sighed, "The letter Tony, what's it about?"
"Nothing important," He answered.
"It can't be nothing," McGee added as he was finally sucked into the conversation.
Tony waved the empty envelope in his face "Does it say Timothy McGee on here? No," He looked at Ziva, "It doesn't say Ziva Daveed on here either" He added.
Ziva tore her eyes away from Tony and glanced at McGee, "It's probably something boring."
"Bills, or a restraining order," McGee suggested with a smile.
"Ha ha, very funny," Tony added.
"He just wants it to drive us crazy all day," Ziva said
"I'm not trying to do anything Ziva," Tony said, he folded the letter up slowly and placed it back in the envelope. He could feel Ziva and McGee's eyes on him as he slowly opened his top drawer and placed the envelope inside before closing it back up. He smiled to himself as he began checking his emails, knowing no matter how hard they tried to forget it, the letter would be bugging his team mates all day. And he knew they would try and go for it the moment he left his desk.
Except he didn't leave his desk⦠all day. He even had his food brought to him by a security guard that still owed him a couple of favours.
It was near the end of the day when Fornell entered the squad room. The team looked up from their desks.
"Finally," Gibbs spoke first. "He's been sitting in interrogation all night."
"I'm sorry Jethro, I've been a little busy."
Gibbs picked up a large file from his desk and handed it to Fornell. "That's everything on him."
"Good, this should go a long way to finding who he works for," Gibbs nodded. "That everything?"
"I think so," Gibbs replied. Fornell turned and started back for the elevator. "One more thing," Gibbs called to the FBI agent. Gibbs walked to Tony's desk, yanked open the top draw, ignoring Tony's protests as he pulled out the envelope. He walked up to Fornell and pushed the envelope into his hand. "Stop trying to steal my agents Fornell," He said before walking back to his desk.
