A/N: Okay, so this story is un-beta'd and probably extremely fragmented. Also, very short. Let's just say my current situation is not very far from this one, so I just had to write something. Yes, it's my first Rory/Logan. Yes, it's probably out of character, and yes it probably sucks. Oh well.

Saying no was probably the hardest thing she ever had to do. She really wanted him to be forever. She honestly did. But he moved too fast. She just graduated. She had so many things still to accomplish, like the Obama trail. And he moved to San Francisco. Their lives were just going in different directions, and it wasn't fair to either of them to give up on their dreams for the other one.
But though she'd never admit it to anyone, part of her wanted to be Mrs. Logan Huntzberger, with one perfect kid in the suburbs somewhere. They'd both work at newspapers. Or maybe she'd travel the world, reporting on wars and famines, and have her family to come back to. Every girl wanted their dream wedding with their dream guy, right? Her mom was going to be her maid of honor. They already decided she'd wear a red strapless dress when she was thirteen. Lane's band would play.
And maybe they'd have that eventually. Maybe. But he had to go and propose to her too early. And saying no probably tore her apart. She cried on her mom's shoulder for longer than she'd care to admit. Random things would set her off- thinking of a restaurant, songs on the radio.
Her musings were cut short by the phone ringing. "Hello?"
"Hey, Ace," comes the soft response.
"Hey," she replies. "How're you doing?"
"Good. Walked around Haight Street today. Everything here closes at ten."
She smiles. "You've mentioned that before."
"Well, it's slightly off-putting. How will I get in wacky shenanigans if all the shenanigans close at ten?"
"You'll find a way, you always do."
He laughs. "Yeah, I do. Finn is visiting me this week, so anything we do will probably end up either in the back of a squad car or at least running from the police."
"I'm so proud," she mocked.
He didn't respond right away, letting the slightly uncomfortable silence fall over them. "So where are you right now?"
"In a crappy hotel room in South Carolina."
"How can you call anything in sweet South Carolina crappy?"
She rolled her eyes. "Moving on, how's San Francisco? Are you enjoying it?"
"I'd enjoy it better if you were here," he almost whispers, and she bites her lip.
"Logan, don't," she pleads.
"Why, Rory? I miss you."
He sounds so endearing, so pathetic, so something, and she almost says 'fuck it' and leaves the trail. Almost. "I can't do this tonight, Logan."
"Love you, Ace."
"Love you too, Logan. Sleep well."
"You too." Then he hangs up and she's alone in her dingy hotel once more.
Their lives were going in different directions. This is for the best. She can reason with herself until the cows come home, but it won't make her feel any better. Yes, this is what she wants. Being on the trail has opened her eyes to so many things, given her so many opportunities.
But she also wants to be with Logan. Ultimately, she believes she made the right choice. Yet she still cries into her pillow after he hangs up.

"Once you have
loved someone this much Let's fade together
you doubt it could fade
despite how
much you'd like it to
God how you'd like it
you'd like it to
fade
Let's fade forever
Let's fade
together
Let's fade forever
Let's fade together"
