Teardrops on my Guitar
"Axel, you gotta meet her!" Roxas said joyfully into his phone.
"Calm down, Rox. Breathe." Axel chuckled at his overly hyper friend. "Meet who?"
"Naminé. I met her at an art convention this weekend." Roxas said, his voice filled with dreamy adoration. Axel felt something tug at his chest. He placed his hand over where his heart should be, trying to numb the pain. How many times had he heard Roxas talk like this about a rare number of girls? How many times had he, his best friend, had to help to pick up the pieces after every one? He listened silently as Roxas talked about her.
Naminé.
He talked about her hair, her art, how beautiful and sweet and shy she was. Axel's hands balled into fists as he tried to keep his temper down. Why couldn't Roxas ever talk about HIM that way? His ears rang as Roxas said something he'd heard many times, but never wanted to hear.
"So, before the weekend ended, I took your advice!" Roxas said. He paused, waiting for Axel's reaction.
"What advice?" Axel asked, slightly confused.
"To ask out the one I love." Roxas said shyly.
"That's great, Roxy!" Axel replied, hiding his pain. "What did she say?"
"She said yes!" Roxas blurted out. "You and Demyx and Zexion and everyone can meet her at the caf this Saturday. I can't wait for you to meet her, Axel. I know you'll love her!"
How do I love someone who took away the one I really love? Axel thought, heartbroken, yet again.
"I'm sure I will, Rox." Axel made himself smile a little to convince himself not to cry.
"Well, I gotta go now. I think Sora's on the other line. See ya." Roxas said, hanging up.
Axel let him phone drop to the floor. He stared downward as he walked to his tall windowsill. He stared down the railing, telling himself not to cry, to stay strong. Roxas would come around eventually, right? Its part of that whole true love shtick, right? He saw a droplet of water fall to the railing. He touched his eyes, they were dry. Looking up, he saw dark clouds. Clouds that embodied how he felt right now.
Broken.
As the drops fell, he remembered how he and Roxas explained rain when they were little.
"Axey, do you believe in God?" Roxas asked.
"Not really, Roxy. If God existed, my parents wouldn't have died." Axel said, his hands behind his head. The two were sitting on their favorite hill and staring at the blue sky as the clouds rolled by.
"Axey?" Roxas asked.
"What's up, Rox?" Axel smiled at his friend warmly.
"Demmy said that rain is made when God's mad." He said naively. "And Marly said it's made when God's… you know… going to the bathroom." He laughed. "Which is it?"
"Well, I don't think it's either of them." Axel said, looking back up at the big, fluffy looking clouds. "I think it's when the clouds are broken."
"Then I'll think that too!" Roxas said, sitting and looking at the redhead.
"That's cool, Rox." Axel chuckled, ruffling his blonde spikes.
Axel stayed at that sill, remembering everything about Roxas. happy memories, to make him forget about losing him again. His spikes eventually drooped, due to the pouring rain.
"The clouds are heartbroken." Axel murmured, closing his window.
