Happily Ever After

Just a random thought that came to me while I was taking a shower (I think I should bring a waterproof notebook into the shower with me so that I can jot down my ideas as they come to me). Anyway, so I was wondering, "What would Bruce consider as 'happily ever after?'" So this short and tiny fic was born. Enjoy!

We've all heard the phrase at least once in our lives. Over ninety years of experience has told me one thing: "happily ever after" doesn't always exist. Then again, sometimes it does. My ever-working mind has split each experience into three separate groups.

First comes the relationships that simply do not work out. In this case, "happily ever after" just doesn't happen. Let's list a few examples: me and Andrea Beaumont, me and Selina Kyle…me and just about anyone, really. Over time, I've realized that "happily ever after" is not for me.

Then comes the relationships that are unsteady. "Happily ever after" depends on how much effort the couple puts into it. For instance, Dick and Barbara had a thing going on for a while, but their relationship never made it. "Happily ever after" doesn't work here. However, sometimes the happy ending does occur, like with Terry and Dana. He plans to propose to her, despite all the fights the two have gotten into since he took on the mantle of Batman. Nevertheless, there is still a chance that their marriage might not work out. "Happily ever after" is never certain in these kinds of relationships.

Finally, there are the rare few relationships that work from the very start to the very end. On these uncommon occasions, the "happily ever after" extends beyond the marriage. The most obvious example would be Thomas and Martha Wayne…my parents. As far as I've known, they never had arguments or problems in their relationship. The happy ending definitely happened in their case. They loved each other from the day they met to the day they died. These are the most unusual relationships, especially in a city like Gotham. However, they are the ones that endure.

So maybe "happily ever after" does exist. Just not in my little world. It's a harsh fact, but I've learned to accept it.

Told ya, short. And stupid. And...well, I'll let you fill the rest in during your flames XD.
