Heart of Steel

-Prologue: The Shadow Moses Incident-

"Hurry Otacon, the air raid's starting!"

Legendary mercenary and soldier Solid Snake ran as fast as he could as he navigated through the underground parking garage. His partner, Dr. Hal Emmerich (a.k.a. "Otacon"), struggled to keep up with Snake's pace as the former FOXHOUND base on Shadow Moses Island shuddered around them from aerial bunker-busters. Unfortunately his right ankle, which was twisted hours earlier, hindered his movement considerably.

The clumping sound of multiple pairs of combat boots behind them urged Otacon forward as he hurried to the jeep where Snake was waiting.

His leg protested with each step he took, but to his credit, the former engineer ignored it. He hobbled into the driver's seat as Snake slid a new magazine into his stolen FAMAS G2 assault rifle. After discarding the spent clip, Snake took cover behind the jeep's turret; a useful weapon, but only operational if the jeep started. Conveniently enough for both of them, the jeep's last driver had left the keys in the ignition.

The engine coughed, smoke pouring from the hood as Otacon turned the key, but the jeep refused to start.

"It's flooded!" Otacon shouted as he fought with the ignition, slamming the gas pedal to the floor at the same time.

One of the doors suddenly burst open and Genome Soldiers came pouring through, standard-issue FAMAS rifles aimed at the ready.

"There they are! Kill them!" one of them ordered before gunfire filled the garage.

Snake dropped down and ducked behind the jeep, bullets puncturing the steel framework of the '80s-era jeep.

"Shit!" Snake shouted over the noise. "Get the jeep working Otacon, I'll hold them off!"

The former soldier returned fire in three-round bursts, dropping a few soldiers in pools of their own blood while more rushed in, some of them equipped with riot gear and bulletproof shields. Otacon continued to fight with the ignition, keeping his body as low as he could. He gave the dashboard a swift kick out of spite. Miraculously, the engine sputtered and then roared to life. The headlights turned on, and he could hear the turret on the back hum as well.

"Snake, get in!" Otacon bellowed as he shifted to first gear. Snake clamored up the side and manned the rear turret. With a smirk, he pulled the double-triggers as a steady stream of hellfire cut down nearly a dozen of their pursuers. The others fell back behind cover, several still firing as Otacon finally drove off.

The lights above the tunnel flickered with each bombardment as Otacon followed the underground road, with Snake on the lookout for any automated turrets or Genome Soldiers.

"At this rate, I think we'll make it Snake," Otacon hollered. "I took a look at this tunnel's schematics before I left. It's only about two miles till we reach the surface."

"Good, just keep going. We're not out of this yet," he growled.

He continued keeping an eye out for threats, fully alert as adrenaline pumped through his veins. An ear-piercing scream caught his attention. He heard the sound of another jeep approaching quickly on their six.

"SNAKE!"

He swerved the turret to the rear and was stunned at what he saw. Another jeep was indeed following them. However, the bare-chested, blonde driver was someone he thought he had finally disposed of.

"Not yet, Snake!"

"Liquid!" Snake yelled as he readied the turret.

Liquid Snake opened fire with a FAMAS, Otacon swerving back and forth to avoid the incoming fire. Solid Snake ducked behind the turret's firing shield for cover as he held down the double triggers, forcing Liquid to back off a bit. He maintained suppressive fire, keeping Liquid at bay as best he could. For a moment, he lost sight of the other jeep until it reappeared directly behind them.

Liquid floored the accelerator and slammed into Snake's jeep. Otacon yelled as his glasses were knocked to the floor while Snake stumbled. The engineer frantically searched for his precious glasses while he tried to keep the jeep straight at the same time. Liquid slowed his jeep slightly and pulled up to their right, so that he was directly parallel to the other jeep. He swung his FAMAS around, a triumphant grin on his face as Snake came into his sights.

To Snake, everything happened in slow motion. He saw Liquid's FAMAS pointing right at him, the man grinning like a lunatic as he squeezed the trigger. Bracing himself, Snake gripped the turret handle as he leaped, twisting his body around in a horizontal spin as he nimbly dodged the best he could. He felt several 7.62mm bullets graze the outer fabric of his Sneaking Suit before he landed on his feet.

Before Liquid could react, Snake leaped on to his jeep and batted the rifle away with one hand. He grabbed Liquid's shoulder and punched him in the face with a right hook. The renegade leader of FOXHOUND screamed as Snake continued beating him, reducing his face into a bloodied, bruised mess.

"Snake, look! Daylight!" Otacon cheered as a faint glow became brighter ahead of them.

His rage satisfied, Snake leapt back to Otacon's jeep as the engineer readjusted his recovered glasses. They were about halfway to the end when another hit from the side knocked them both off balance. Liquid had regained consciousness.

"If I'm going to Hell Snake, I'm taking you with me!" he roared as he locked wheels with Otacon's jeep, accelerating both vehicles at the same time.

"We're gonna crash!" Otacon screamed as he repeatedly hit the brakes. The two jeeps smashed into the wall as they rolled over each other. Snake felt his body flung from the turret like a rag doll.

There was lots of pain; the world was spinning and becoming a blur. A bright light before Snake's eyes...then darkness.

"Snake? Snake...wake up..."

"Meryl?"

Groaning, Solid Snake slowly opened his eyes as scorching sunlight filled his vision. He blinked several times to no avail before he struggled to sit up.

To his surprise, he didn't feel any pain at all, even from the injuries he sustained while fighting Liquid earlier. His eyesight gradually returned, revealing an endless array of trees that surrounded him. He felt what could only be soft grass beneath him as he looked around. Aside from the wind rustling in the trees, he was completely alone.

I could have sworn that was her, he thought. But how?

The past several hours came back to him. A squad of U.S. Spec. Ops kidnapping him in the middle of the night. Meeting with the Colonel. Naomi. The mission. Shadow Moses. Otacon. Liquid. Meryl...

He shook his head to ward off any remaining disorientation he felt. That was some crash. But, this isn't right.

What should have been the familiar Alaskan landscape he grew to call home over the years was instead a forest full of trees. It didn't take Snake long to realize that he was far away from Shadow Moses Island.

"What the hell?"

And that's the end of Chapter One! Chapter Two should be up soon, so let me know what you guys think in a review. Sorry to everyone who's been waiting patiently for me to update LAH. Life has gotten in the way and I had to give up fan fiction for some time before I could resume writing. Anyway, this is another fic I'll be writing along with LAH, so expect updates to both. Thanks for reading, and please review!
