The year they live in North Dakota, Sam takes swimming lessons.

Dean takes him, by bike when it's warm out, bus when it's cold. Dean sits up in the gallery while Sam practices his strokes, and the thought of his big brother up there is like a warm balloon, good air in Sam's lungs.

Afterwards Dean waits while he changes, dries his hair carefully, and Sam feels warm, even in autumn, crisp brown leaves and pumpkins on the doorsteps, the sky darkening, his limbs pleasantly spent.

Homework and grilled cheese sandwiches, Sam's always ravenous by then. Dean fills him up.
