The Adventures of Jane and Claire

Chapter 1: What Could Go Wrong?

JANE

Today so far had been very uneventful. The only thing that might perk any ones interest was that we would be 'hunting'.

Aro had declared that I would be the one to round up the humans this time. Which wasn't too bad, as it gave me something to do. And I would be able to escape the castle walls for a bit. And Alec would probably sneak out to join me, which would make the outing much more enjoyable.

"Jane?" Aro called after me.

"Yes, Aro?"

"I believe it is time for you to venture into the city."

"Agreed."

I walked swiftly passed Aro, and saw that Alec was right around the corner.

"Meet you outside," I whispered as I passed him. "Don't let Aro catch you. You know he only likes one of us to be out at a time." Alec nodded in response.

Since I was trying to attract humans, I didn't wear the usual black cape. Instead I wore jeans, a long sleeved jacket, gloves and a hat. Most of my skin was covered.

I opened the door, and stepped into the mid-afternoon sun, which was setting just above the horizon.

QUIL

"Ova here, Qwil!"

Claire pulled my hand towards the gate where our plane was going to take off. Our plan was to fly to France for her 3rd birthday. Emily said I was spoiling her, but how could I not? Claire was adorable and I would do nothing but make her happy. I don't think I could bear to see her small, delicate face shed a single tear.

Almost in a daze I let her pull me towards the gate. The plane was boarding right away, so we walked into the door after handing the clerk our tickets.

"Please be seated." a flight attendant said.

"C'mon, Claire!" I lifted her into my arms and then carefully set her in her seat. Then I sat down next to her. She giggled.

As the flight passed I was dozing off and awakening, so much that I wasn't sure what was reality and what was a dream.

Then someone was tugging on my sleeve.

"Qwil, Lookit!" Claire was pointing out the window.

I saw a lot of brick pathways, and a few fountains, but where was the Eiffel tower? Shouldn't I have seen it by now?

As I kept searching, the pilots voice came on over the intercom.

"Welcome to Volterra."

Please let this be a dream.
