Sam couldn't tell you anymore how many buildings he's broken into. He used to keep a mental list of them, alongside girls he'd kissed and state capitals he'd visited, but the novelty's long since worn off.

This cottage is isolated from the others, hence the appeal. Sam's up to his knees in snow, wind chapping his cheeks, sinuses burning, fingers numb as he finally twists the tension wrench. The lock slides open smooth and sweet, door yawning inward to dry musty warmth, and unexpectedly, in the dark beside an anonymous frozen lake, Sam remembers when this felt like a superpower.
