A/N: Hey guys! Before you read this one shot, please remember that I haven't seen any CSI:NY episodes after 5.05, and so I do not know how Lindsay's pregnancy and DL in general is handled at the moment - so this is probably different.
Also, this fic hints to another New Year's fic I wrote last year - Minutes to Midnight - you don't need to read that one before this, but if you want to, go ahead ;) It's not long.

Well, that's all I have to say for now, enjoy reading! Please leave me a review if you liked it! I'd really appreciate it :)

I promise

In this moment, Danny Messer considered himself the happiest man on the world. Keeping his head in the present, not looking back on the mistakes he'd made this year, he was perfectly content. And since the girl lying in his arms, his girlfriend, the mother-to-be of his first child, his hopefully fiancée-to-be, his Montana, Lindsay Monroe, had told him not to think about the past anymore, he was happy.

There was, however, something he could do in order to make himself – and possibly her – even happier. That all depended on her answer, though.

"Are you asleep?" he asked softly, not wanting to wake her.

But she turned and smiled widely at him. "Of course not. It wouldn't do to fall asleep a few minutes before the new year starts, now would it?"

He grinned. "You know, I was thinking.. Remember those promises we made last year?"

Her smile faltered a little, but she quickly composed her face. "Yeah, sure I do. What about them?"

Despite the promise to himself he made just a minute ago, Danny needed to think about the mistakes he'd made this year. Not only think – talk.

"Well, I was just thinking I didn't keep many of them," he began, only to be interrupted by Lindsay's hand silencing him.

"Stop," she said softly. "I told you not to think about those things anymore, Danny, please. I don't want you hurting over this anymore than you already have. It's not fair."

Sighing, he shook his head. He took her hand from his face, but he did hold onto it. He couldn't bear to have her not touching him somewhere. "It's not fair for me to hurt over this when I've hurt you so much?"

She shook her head and opened her mouth to speak, but he spoke first. "No, Lindsay. But don't worry, I'm not going to go all angsty over this." He grinned. "I just... I just want to know – if I promise you to make up for everything next year, to keep all the promises I made, but didn't keep, before, can you believe that I will?"

She was nodding before he'd even finished his sentence. "Of course, Danny."

"Good. In that case, Lindsay Monroe, I promise you that I'll always be here for you, and for our child as well." He placed one hand on her slightly swollen stomach for a moment, then stood up from the couch they were seated on, taking her with him. He could tell she was confused, but instead of answering her unspoken questions, he just smiled and went down on one knee.

Fumbling with the little square box in his pocket, he continued talking. "I promise I'll take care of you, of both of you, forever. Will you, Lindsay Monroe, my Montana... Will you marry me?"

He opened the box, and Lindsay gasped softly. Not knowing if that was a good or a bad sign, he waited anxiously for her response.

"I... Danny..."

His heart skipped a beat. Was she going to say no? Then the biggest smile he'd ever seen crossed her face, and she threw her arms around his neck, kissing him enthousiastically.

"Of course I will," she mumbled against his lips. "Nothing would make me happier."

And as 2009 started, neither of the two New York scientists noticed. They were too happy in their own bubble to be disturbed by common things such as a new year beginning.

After all, their own new beginning was much more important to them.

A/N: Happy 2009, everyone!
