Reasons To Live

He has nothing to live for.

She knows Zabuza is dead. She also knows how much he's hurt. But she's really scared because she knows it'll be any day now.

Today, he kissed her so tenderly, her heart broke. If only she could make him understand how important he was to her.

"I love you, Haku." whispered Isaribi. His face so close to hers, she could smell his shampoo. Haku pushed her away lightly, as if she would break if pushed to hard. He shook his head. Isaribi gasped. "But I do!" she cried.

"I do not want to hurt you." he said. Isaribi savored the sweet sound of his feminine voice. "But I will, if I have to."

Her eyes widened. "You're doing it anyway!" she shouted. Tears spilled down her cheeks. "You have a reason to live! I can make you happy!" she reasoned. "If you'll let me..."

Haku studied her but shook his head again. "I'm of no use to you, Isaribi. Find a good man and..." He pulled her close and kissed her passionately. "Forget about me."

Isaribi felt a stinging prick on her back and realized what Haku was doing. Her vision became blurry and Haku began to fade. "No!" she tried to shout, but her voice wasn't working.

Darkness came uninvited.

It was like Haku never existed. She couldn't find anything about him anywhere, no records of any kind.

She made her decision that night.

Dinking poison seemed like an easy way to go. Excessive amounts of wolf's bane could kill and it was easy to acquire.

So she drank to the memory of her only love.

Much to her dismay, she woke to the bright sunlight seeping through her window.

"It must not have worked." she moaned, her head felt like it was going to explode.

"I gave you an antidote."

Isaribi jerked toward the voice. Haku stood in her bedroom doorway with a tray of food.

"I have to be dreaming." said Isaribi. The poison must have worked. She was in a horrible hell where her love was laid out before her and she couldn't get to him.

"Dazed maybe," answered Haku. "But not dreaming." He sat the tray down on her night table and sat on her bed, facing away from her.

Isaribi reached out and caught a lock of his loose hair, he never wore it down. "What happened?" she asked.

"I needed time to think."

"Oh."

Haku turned and faced her. "I came to check on you and found you half dead. Any later and I would have been too late."

Isaribi looked away, ashamed at her actions. "I wasn't going to live without you."

"Apparently." replied Haku. He cupped her face and pulled her close so his lips were right at her ear. "I came back because I want to live for you, Isaribi."

Said woman sobbed silently. Now all she had to do was tell him her secret.

"I'm pregnant." she whispered.

He pulled away and stared at her. After a moment, he smiled and kissed her. "Now I have two reasons to live."

Isaribi shook her head. "Three."

So my first real try at a sad one. No humor this time! Shocking, I know.
